While we're refuging (refugeeing? ) back here at the CoE, we need to get this place so that it looks lived in again!

So, how many times have you seen the Chamber of Secrets so far? I've seen it twice :) First time with my sister and friend Stacy, second time with 2 other friends. And what was your favourite part?

I like Dobby, I think the CGI on him was great! Especially when he goes to kneel on Harry's desk chair. The way his feet and toes curled under him...amazing work I must say! I want one :D

I've seen it twice... first time on opening night with my best friend, second time alone. ;)

It's kinda quiet here.. .I don't think the MI regulars have any clue what's going on. :(

I've only seen it once so far with my friend Martha.

I thought it was pretty good, especially the duelling scene :D

I've seen it twice.

First with a friend of mine on the second night from opening.
Second time I went alone and unfortunately had seat next to a guy from my class and I had to lie him that my friend couldn't make it :o

aw, Elfëa, there's no shame in going to see a movie alone!

Amby, you mean its been out for 2 whole days and you haven't seen it yet? I went opening night, the cinema was INSANE! and crawling with little kids with lightning bolt "tattoos" on their foreheads! It was quite frightening! ;)

i've seen it twice as well.

once with my friend the night it came out, once with my mom 2 nights ago.

i think my favorite part would be the dueling scene...that is so cool.

my mom was in heaven...all her favorite shakespearean actors in one movie! :D

This is the reason I have not been yet

I like to watch the movie and not be distracted a lot

Wait a minute

I went to see Fellowship with a Haremite and a legolass and there was lots of swooning going on

Perhaps I will go Tuesday

I've only seen CoS once in the theater so far; went opening weekend with my gaming buddies. I think there were four people, including myself, all garbed up - only one of those was an actual child. :)

I went to the lastest showing, so there weren't that much kids around... :)

LOL Elfea, no shame in going alone at all. ;)

Can't begin to tell you how many people I knew saw me leaving alone... :o :D

I want to watch it again, mainly to keep an eye out for JKR's cameo and these:

* As Hagrid is taking Harry away from Knockturn Alley, we see, in one of the shop windows in the background, an entire set of Harry Potter books

* As Harry enters Prof. Dumbledore's study, a portrait of Gandalf the Grey is included in the collection of the great wizard paintings. It is above the doorframe and slightly to Harry's right.

* Jason Isaacs' own hair is visible under his wig in his last close-up. (not that looking at him will be that hard ;))

* Whether Lucius REALLY says "Avada" or not.

* When Aragog is emerging from his hole, the strings operating his legs are visible.

:swoon:

Now to go to Lit Disc. I've been reading. ;)

Okay, they've been watching too much LotR.

Should I go see it again? :o

Colli

Sure! I'd love to see it again, but not in my town. The same girl has seen me twice (she works there).. included the time I went alone. She was cleaning up the theater as I sat through the credits, alone. :D

I'd need to drive 40 minutes to Ashland, though. :(

Rivenlas

Twice for me.

JKR has a cameo?!?! OOohh, definitely going again. I saw the dealy after the credits once, very cute.

It would be worth it just to see Lucius again...When I was watching, I saw that Felton's acting had changed to look a little more like JI's...and then I was reading a Tom Felton interview and he admitted JI had given him acting advice...interesting, and fun to watch for. TF uses his eyebrows a lot more in this movie, I think.

Elfëa
11-30-2002, 05:31 PM
I never thought about that- using eyebrows, but I must say that Rupert's facial expressions are fabulous! :D

Okay. No one's going out with me tonight it means I'll bore you death here and at KD ;)

Too bad they aren't showing the movie at this time of evening anymore :(

Colli
11-30-2002, 05:38 PM
Yeah.. I could tell how much Draco and Lucius looked like they were related.

Draco's sneers.. those were just too funny. And Tom even starting improvising some of his lines... "I didn't know you could read" wasn't in the script. :D

Acting advice from JI... :swoon:

I'd rather see it in the afternoon, Elfea. Less people to know I'm there. ;)

JI improvised too--yet another father-son trait! Isaacs made up the "Let us hope Mr. Potter will always be around to save the day," And also chose his costume, including the snake cane. They were going to give him GRAY hair and a pinstriped suit. Hello? Lucius hates muggles. He would never dress like them. Plus blonde is like the Malfoy family's defining characteristic.

I thought Draco's 'didn't know you could read' line was one of the funniest things in the movie.

I will be going to see it again. Or I'll buy the DVD - for all these mistakes:

[size=1]from wronskifeint.com[/i]
Newest mistakes at bottom marked with a *

In the Quidditch scene, Harry breaks his right arm, but as he sits up after he falls off his broom, he leans directly on it.

In the first film, we see that Susan Bones (the red haired girl) is sorted into Hufflepuff, however throughtout the Chamber of Secrets, Susan not only has her classes with the Griffyndors BUT is also wearing a Griffyndor tie.

In the scene where the Chamber finally opens, we first see Harry, Ron and Professor Lockhart from the front, and Harry and Ron are slightly behind Lockhart, and in a position to threaten and guard him. When you next see them a moment later from behind, Lockhart is behind them and they are in no position to guard him.

When Harry first hears the whispering voice and is walking down the hallway feeling the wall as the voice gets louder. Notice he has a round red mark on the back of his right hand. In the next shot it's gone.

When Harry and Ron crash into the Whomping Willow, the tree made a big hole in the back windshield. Later, when they are escaping in the car from the spiders, the hole is considerably smaller.

When Lockhart falls down the hole into the Chamber of Secrets, we hear him hit the ground a second or two later. When Ron and Harry jump down, not only do they take longer to get down, they also slide down the pipe, rather than fall straight down.

After Errol delivers the Howler to Ron, he flies very close to Hermione's head, the wire attached to the Owl is clearly visible as it passes her hair. It looked like it actually hits her in the face.

In the scene where Professor McGonegal is teaching the class how to turn an animal into a goblet the writing on the blackboard at the front of the classroom is back to front.

In the chamber, as Harry crawls back to Ginny after killing the Basilisk, there is a pool of black ink in the water just past Ginny's head. It is only as the scene continues that Harry stabs the diary and it leaks all the ink - causing a trail down to the water, where the pool of black ink is.

When Harry and Ron can't get through the barrier at Kings Cross, they go outside to the car. The outside of the station is St Pancras station and not Kings Cross.

In the first film, Harry's family clearly live in a small close with trees behind their house - see owls delivering mail. The opening of COS shows Privet Drive to be in the middle of a large housing estate with houses to the rear.

When Harry is in Diagon Alley and Hermione fixes Harry's glasses, students are not allowed to perform magic out of Hogwarts or off the Hogwarts Express, so Hermione shouldn't have been allowed to do that magic, and she is a very law-abiding person.

After Harry has been told that he only has a minute to live, he seems to have enough strength to put the tooth right through the diary and sit up and tell Ginny what to do.

During the filming of The Chamber of Secrets, Emma Watson broke her wrist. In the trailer, when Harry, Ron, and Hermione are drinking the polyjuice potion, you can see the cast on Emma's wrist sticking out of her robes.

Notice as Harry walks into his room his hair is flat. They cut to Dobby for a bit and they return to Harry, but this time his hair is a bit messy.

The writing on the wall is is bright red from the side shot, but when you see the message full on, the writing has turned brown.

Elfëa
12-02-2002, 05:23 PM
Indeed. She does.

But it's before she's at school :p And it's on Hogwarts Express - perhaps it has something to do with the Muggle World - they're not allowed to do magic in there :) - Harry, Herm and Weasleys do magic on Hogwarts express as well :) And Ron tries to turn Scabbers yellow on the train...

Colli

What I find interesting is that magic is allowed on the Hogwarts train and not in school hallways.

Elfëa
12-02-2002, 06:05 PM
There aren't any teachers in the train - only the driver and the witch who sells goodies- perhaps there's no way preventing students from doing it?

I mean, they still do magic in the corridors, even though it's not allowed :) And they aren't always caught...

I guess this probably isn't the place to admit that I finally saw The Sorcerer's Stone for the first time last week. :)

It was fun and I enjoyed most of it. I have to say, however, that they could have eliminated all the Dursley bits and I wouldn't have missed it at all.

And the Quidditch game bothered me, too. First of all, it's such a pointless game. The only thing that really matters is catching the Snitch, right? So then what are the rest of those guys out there for? Running up a bunch of scores that don't matter anyway? Instead of being a team game, it would make more sense just to make it one-on-one, like tennis.

Also, do they ever officiate and enforce the rules? A lot of what the Slytherin team was doing was just plain cheating, no matter how you look at it. So why didn't they penalize them or stop the game or something?

Oh well. I enjoyed the rest of it. Especially Snape. :swoon:

Smeagol
12-03-2002, 03:05 PM
in Quidditch the points carry over into the next games which can be important later on as is evidenced in Prisoner of Azkaban.

Also, it would kind of boring to watch two guys looking around for a little snitch for however long it took, the other players give the crowd something to pay attention to while the seekers do their work.

that's my theory at least...

Amberion
12-03-2002, 05:03 PM
Actually it is possible to catch the snitch and still lose

Getting the Quaffle through the ring is worth 10 points
Catching the snitch is worth 100 (I think) and ends the game

Colli
12-03-2002, 05:04 PM
Plus adding the bludgers and the beaters makes things a lot more complicated and challenging :D.

Elfëa
12-03-2002, 05:48 PM
Quiddich - wizards twisted idea of fun :p

Catching Snitch is worth of 150 points - but because it can take ages to see it and catch it the Quaffle plays important part in game. 10 points for getting it through the ring - if the Chasers are good enough, the team can win the match even if the other team catches the Snitch :)

And Beaters and Bludgers and some brutality and "wizardry" ;) to the game...

I wouldn't enjoy seeing a live match - it just sounds even brutal enough! - okay, I don't enjoy football either :o

Colli
12-05-2002, 01:52 AM
:D I love watching brutal sports... and I'd pay ANYTHING to get to see a Quidditch match!

Heck, I'd pay anything to get to fly a broomstick. How awesome would that be? Speeding down towards the earth, only to pull up the last minute, completing the impressive Wronski Feint.

It was slightly less awful than the first one (a big thanks to Christian Coulson) and I will only watch it again once I add the video to my Alan Rickman collection :D (who disappointed me, by the way).

What's that about a cameo?

Alan Rickman disappointed you? :( I thought he was great. :D And I watched Mesmer last night! :swoon:

The cameo is as Harry leaves Borgins & whatever at Knockturn Alley. She's one of those witches in black, I believe the one that speaks to Harry.

Which is funny, because in an interview before the first movie she said she'd hate doing a cameo, because she hates seeing herself onscreen!

No, I haven't. But Snape's character gets a whole lot cooler in PoA too. :D Whoever gets chosen as Sirius Black HAS to have great chemistry with Rickman. If you can't tell that they loathe each other just by looking at them standing side by side, then they've picked the wrong person. ;)

12-08-2002, 06:06 PM
Well actually, I've never seen it, until today I was finally going to. That is 'going to'.. (This might be off topic but I thought I'd write it here).

I asked some from my class to follow me and it finally came down to four of us. We went down to the cinema, got our tickets and discovered the place was nearly empty so we took the best seats somewhere in the middle. Then the light went down, the commercial was showing and finally...

What seemed to be a trailer for a movie called K-19 came up. The others asked if it was just a trailer and I said yes, the movie will show afterwards.
I thought.
It really turned out it was no trailer, we were actually watching the movie K-19 (one of the worst films I've ever seen too). Well we realised we had gone to the wrong theatre and as it later turned out, I had mixed up the dates. Harry Potter was not showing until next saturday. You could see the expressions on my classmates faces was like

Well I paid their tickets and they were not so mad about it but I'm feeling kind of depressed right now. First we had looked forward to it the whole week, we don't get to the cinema much but when we do it has to be a really good film. Then only to see a boring movie about a russian submarine and for 2 1/2 hours!

I would really like to be smacked by a fish right now for I have certainly deserved it. So here's from myself to myself :trout:

Sorry if this is off topic just had to get it off my chest. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?

PS: I might as well ask you, are any actors replaced by another actor or are everyone played by the same actors as in the last movie?

Aiwendil

Colli
12-08-2002, 06:17 PM
Aww! What an awful experience!

The actors, to the best of my knowledge, are all the same. Right down to the guard dude in between platforms nine and ten. :D

And as for the on-topic-ed-ness, it's not entirely on topic, but neither was our conversation before it. :D It's all good.. I don't think there are enough of us here for it to really be a problem.

Amberion
12-09-2002, 08:03 AM
Hi Aiwendil

You may not have heard but Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore died after filming Chamber of Secrets. :(

So for Prisoner of Azkaban there will need to be a new Dumbledore

Aiwendil
12-09-2002, 08:50 AM
I'm sorry to hear that.:( It must be difficult replacing him since he was such a great actor for Dumbledore.

According to imdb, there will also be a new director for the next film. I very much doubt it's Steven Spielberg as the rumor goes. Someone less famous seems more likely. As a comfort, Chris Columbus said that he'll maybe be back to direct the fourth film.

If anyone's interested they also mentioned a bit of trivia from CoS. In Dumbledore's study among the portraits of great wizards, just above the doorpost there's a portrait of Gandalf the Grey.

Since I haven't seen CoS yet, I wonder if it's a picture of Ian McKellen as Gandalf or a drawing by for example Alan Lee.

None the less, it's cool lotr gets mentioned in that way.:)

Aiwendil

Sirius Black
12-09-2002, 10:00 AM
As a 'comfort'?? I am quite looking forward to PoA, filmed, by the way, by Alfonso Cuarón - as I'm expecting it to be a more grown-up film, which will honour the theme of the book. Columbus stays producer though.
Spielberg? That would be funny, as it was him who didn't get to film the first one, cause JK didn't want an all-american cast, right?

I didn't see a picture of McKellen - I'm sure that wouldn't have gone unnoticed. :D

Colli
12-09-2002, 05:28 PM
Christopher Lee is VERY annoyed by that rumor... he's not playing Dumbledore and I'm 99.999999% sure that Ian McKellen would turn it down, too.

Since I haven't seen CoS yet, I wonder if it's a picture of Ian McKellen as Gandalf or a drawing by for example Alan Lee.

Judging by the way it was put, I'd tend to think it'd Gandalf the Grey. Shouldn't the picture be moving? Kinda hard to make those Alan Lee drawings move. ;)

Aiwendil
12-10-2002, 01:56 PM
Well I heard it on the radio and got the impression (since the announcer seemed very certain about it) that he was replacing Richard Harris, but if it's not him, I'm sure plenty of other actors would volounteer for the part.

It's hard talking about the film when I haven't seen it yet, only by judging from reading magazines or the internet. I'll get back to you after I've seen it to have some more insight.

PS: I just love all the trivia around films so here's another one (that I'm pretty sure it's true) :
When Harry is shopping in diacon alley, in one of the shop's windows there's a set of Harry Potter books.

See you later

Here are two somewhat conflicting reports I've read:

Despite rumors that he would take over a key role in the "Harry Potter" movies from the late Richard Harris, actor Christopher Lee says that is only a rumor and that it is false. He says he has half a dozen other films in his future, including the next sequels to "Star Wars" and "Lord Of The Rings," according to an interview in Variety with senior columnist Army Archerd.

and

He makes no secret of the fact that he would love to play Professor Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster role so memorably created in the first two Harry Potter movies by the late Richard Harris. He firmly scotched rumors swirling around the movie industry: "I was never approached to play the part. I have not been approached to play the part."

But he did add: "I could certainly play the character but it wouldn't be the same way that the late Richard Harris played it."

I've only seen him in Star Wars and FotR.. I can't really imagine him playing a kindly old wizard. :p

Sirius Black
12-10-2002, 05:41 PM
Nope - nor could I. (Watch him in 'The man with the golden gun'!) And honestly - stealing actors from LotR just doesn't seem like a good thing to do. That would be a bit like using the dubbing voice of one famous actor for dubbing an equally famous but completely different one. It just doesn't work!

Now we've got 2 threads about the same question. ;)

Twice and I'll stop here until the DVD come out. Why? very easy: the dubbing into Spanish is simply atrocious. This is unusual, since dubbing here is usually quite good (TTT, for intance was so well done that in a few places I liked the translation better than the original  ) I almost left after Ron appeared onscreen. All the kids have bad voices, but Ron's is dreadful.

So I took the chance, when I went to Madrid, to see it in English, and wes very relieved about it. As where I live there's not a hope to catch it in English, two will be my final number.

Dreadful it is... :(

In Spain most people are so used to dubbing that original versions can only be found regularly in the bigger cities, such as Madrid or Barcelona. I was born in Madrid, and never went to a dubbed film unless I had to. But then I moved, and here you get only dubs.

I've seen it twice, too.

My friend and I saw it the day it came out and we had the worst seats -- first row all the way to the right. It was terrible, we couldn't see and it was hard to hear it way up front.

We went again the day before TTT came out and had a whole theater to ourselves. Aside from it being freezing, it was wonderful.

Can't wait for the DVD!

I've seen it twice. It's still in the teathers here, but I don't really have any wish to see it. I think I'll just wait for the DVD, but I'll probably just rent it, because I only wish to see the extras and all the Snape and Lucius scenes.

Only once.:( Though I learned it's playing in a theatre only about an hour away. However, I don't think I will get a chance so I'm just waiting for the DVD.

Ermmm, 4 times. The last 3, there were absolutely no children in the audience. Maybe that's why I kept going back! Adults here take their Harry Potter seriously, I guess.

Amrael, what a bad experience! I mean, Ron shouldn't sound anything but like RON! He sounded just like the book. (Know what I mean?)

Last time I saw it, the theater was packed with kids and parents, and it was one of the best movie-going experiences I've had in a long time. The audience was so enthused, and laughed at all the right places and everything (unlike my previous viewings). They were all true fans!

They'd probably had their naps, too:D I only wish audiences were always that good.

Grand total is now 3.

Hey Winky! Once you get settled in it's loads of fun!:D

I have only seen CoS twice :(
BUT it was better the second time I saw it, it's one of those films that just doesn't grow old.

LOL, me and my sis Din got the DVD of H&tSS we watched it twelve times in a row. Loads of spare time we've got!

But we're going out to buy CoS when it first hits stores on April 11th

I've seen it once. I finally got around to seeing it today a couple hours ago.

Brief Comments:
I liked it about as much as I liked PS (or SS).
Still disappointed with the casting of Harry.
The rest of the cast is ok - Ron being second weakest, IMO.
Movie doesn't have anything on the book, IMO.

To sum up my feelings on it - IMO, it was pretty much an unremarkable film. It wasn't remarkabley bad. It wasn't remarkably good. It was... shrug OK.

As I've said before, long ago, I think it's b/c the books have more humor, character, threads, and sub-plots than a movie can handle. The resulting movie isn't mysterious enough to be a mystery, isn't funny enough to be a comedy, and doesn't have enough action to be an action film, IMO.
The result is, IMHO, an unremarkable movie based on a remarkable book.

Still I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one. But I especially look forward to GoF, and I especially look forward to Order of the Phoenix! :)

Well it was at the last theatre in town. The one that every flick goes to before it goes to dvd. So I went. Number 5. Seeing all my fav actors and actresses on screen was worth the trip. Loved Jason Isaacs, Alan Rickman, Richard Harris (sigh, I miss you!), Robbie Coltraine, Maggie Smith.....(Missed Zoe Wannamaker!) Hated the spider scene, naturally. I really can't deal with that. I usually take a bathroom break then.....

Hated the spider scene, naturally. I really can't deal with that. I usually take a bathroom break then..... I've done that too! Another time I closed my eyes, but it didn't help much...the sound is still so creepy! Spiders don't really scare me, but there was thousands and thousands of them and they were REALLY big! shudders

The rest of the cast is ok - Ron being second weakest, IMO.
How can you not like Rupert!?
Out of all the actors other than Tom Felton that he was the most natural.
He just has a knack for the screen, and he just fit the character really well.
I think that Daniel was the worst, but then again he is learning. He was much improved in the second film.

Well, Lithorose, the first time I saw the movie, I embarrassed myself by curling in a fetal position in my seat. The kid next to me saw fit to laugh out loud.

That scene was the most definitive, worst movie experience for me, psychologically, and I've been watching movies for about 35 years. But then, I hate spiders. I mean, reallllly hate spiders. (Phobia!) I knew the scene was in there, but I didn't realize how......REAL it would be.

I still like the movie. Thank God it's on DVD. My fast forward button will be worn out because of this one.

If I had little kids, I wouldn't take them, even though it's only PG. I wouldn't even take my 17 year-old-sister, given her fear of them. FF button will be nice though;)

Today makes three. :D

I fastforwarded the forest scene because I find it boring. ;) And because Aragog looks like a freaking Ewok.

Terry
04-11-2003, 11:05 PM
Yes, Aragog is lame....it's the little spiders, the thousands of them that get me all wonky! It's a phobia thing. For us arachnophobics, this movie is just horrifying. Oh, and speaking of the shocking moments....when Ron gets grabbed by the spider....I jumped. Very embarrassed. Hmmmmph..

That's not good Chiana :( I bought the 2 disk dvd: Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone 3 days ago from Amazon.com. I can't wait to get it.

My heart jumped at the spider scene too... I have to admit even though I love spiders.

Does watching it in your sleep count? If so, have no idea how many times......

Yeah, so, I've got a serious Jason Issacs and Alan Rickman problem!!!!

Whoops! I'm on the wrong thread again, aren't I? :o :D

I've seen Cos twice in the theatre and I think maybe 1 or 2 other times on video. I was fortunate enough to have a very lovely friend who sent me the Chamber of Secrets DVD as a gift, so now I can watch it to my heart's content on my DVD player.

I've seen the first film quite a few times on video--I honestly can't remember if I saw it in the theatre--wait, no I didn't. I saw it on video and DVD. Then they played it on HBO a zillion times so I lost track.

I saw the film only once at the cinema , but since I got it on DVD I've been watching some of it every day. ;) I have mostly been consentrating on the film but on some days I do the activities.
The activities are OK but definately my favourite is the extended scenes(or the scenes that were cut out)
