A lot of websites dont allow linking to pictures on their sites as that uses their bandwidth to display it on our site (websites have a certain allocation for bandwith per month and they get charged extra if the people who access them go over this limit. It can also crash the site, which has happened to us before)

Yeah, I tried to post a pic of Buttons over in the Pets thread in the Pony. Maybe MSN Photos has changed their policy too. Which really stinks cause I have no other webspace. And just today I took a great picture of Buttons with his furry belly in the air. Anyway...

Buttons can't stand bannanas. When he's near one, he wrinkles his nose and squints his eyes and generally looks completely disgusted. The same thing happens with toothpaste (or any minty thing) and bubble gum.

My mom and my aunt saw Signs, and based on what they said, I'll rent it and watch it at home. So I can hold a pillow in front of my eyes when necessary ;)

I haven't seen "Signs," but I want to! I'd probably more scared seeing it at home, actually...I'd most likely watch it at night by myself, and then have to go upstairs to bed in the dark...:o

Yeah, I'd get more freaked out if I saw it at home, but there would always be the upside of actually retaining the use of both my hands (one was being grabbed by Dom on one side and another friend on the other side). But I prefer cinema mostly because there are loads of people also screaming and/or jumping, so I don't feel quite such an idiot.

That's the same with lucy! And orange and citrus stuff as well. One time my little bro charlie was blowing those soap bubbles and she went mad! She was so scared of them!

I jelled at the bit when he sees it in the tv, although I knew something was coming, because of the absence of music. Also at the bit where it has its hand on the little boy's shoulder.

I should really get dressed. I never seem to be able to on sundays for some reason.

We have school play auditions tomorrow! Godspell - anyone seen it? It was on at the Theatre Royal ages ago but I didn't see it - the only thing I know is it had joel from neighbours in it!

I just got the part of the understudy for John in the Disney version of 'Peter Pan' @ College. Impressive, huh? ;) I think not. The main John is played by a chick for crying out loud. I must just suck.

I first saw Godspell (play not film) in 1974I think

It was really good - though not quite as good as Jesus Christ Superstar (which was awesome and featured some of Australia's biggest rock stars of the time)

lol. There were nearly 500, 000 people there by the end (more than the Countryside Alliance march last week :D ) , it was so busy ! My arms really ache now and I've got splinters from the banners, but it was so worth it.

You can now buy honeydukes chocolate here, weel in Southend and London you can, haven't seen any here yet. Though it is vry strange, it has strange flavoured nougat (haven't worked out what flavour yet, with green caramel, covered with chocolate with sparkly things on top, strangly addictive.

Boring days - even though first (and only :o) class is at 1pm I never get enough sleep (blame it all on fanfiction that I read till 4am last night...)
And it was laundry day... :eek:

Took me 4 hours! :jawdrop: - first queing half an hour :mad: for a washing machine, then for dryer... and I only washed 2 loads!

*sigh*

I start and finish with the easiest exams. English Lit tomorrow at nine, and finish on the 17th, I think with a ten hour art exam...

Well, got study leave, so I'll be eating doughnuts by the Thames and the Cutty Sark inbetween exams...

Shame its cold though :( In the summer, we could sit in Greenwich park and listen to the world cup on my minidisc "RONALDO JUST SCORED!!"

I think the coldest I've been in(by degrees, not counting the wind!) is around 30... :eek:

But actually, you don't notice the cold inside :p The central heating and douple-glasing is *good* in Finland :p (Not as in here :rolleyes: - I freeze in my room and there's not even minus degrees outside :mad: )

We never go anywhere around Christmas... :)
Stay home, visit close family. :)

*sighs*

I just realised I have to decide where I'll spend Christmas this year - as my parents are divorced...
And my granny wants me as well :rolleyes: And my friends want me for the morning - that's a tradition... :D

And that castle cathedral thing is AMAZING. We don't have buildings like that in the states. :p

I went to Movie Gallery with the intention of renting the SE.... THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT! AT ALL! So I was like "Well, I'll go find Trainspotting. I've been meaning to see it". It wasn't there either! :eek: So I thought "OK. Find an Alan Rickman movie".. and the only one I could remember was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. And it was rented. Finally I started walking through the aisles trying to find a movie that looked appealing.. and suddenly Mr Rickman's face just kinda jumped out at me.

Mesmer is a REALLY weird movie.

But Alan's awesome. And I got to hear him say swoon!!! :swoon:

Depends on how much you want to spend. Bond Street is a no no, for everyone apart from Millionaires and Celebrities. Covent Garden is in the middle, I got two things... In Mango, and H & M you can get nice jumpers for about £30 :) oh all snug!

Then Oxford Strret is lovley! It has everything! Apart from WHSmiths.... :rolleyes:

If I met someone who told me to call them "Betsy"... and then I spent several weeks (/months.. I haven't read FotR in MONTHS.. and I can't remember) calling her that, and then later found out that her name was Vivica or something, I'd probably still call her Betsy. :D

Like people on Imladris. I know Fleur and FleurD and Bridget are not your all's names, but if I ever met you in real life I'd probably still call you that. ;)

I've got assigment due on 20th and cause I'm going to London/Gatwick for 17-19th, I have to hand it in on 17th... And if I want grammar check it with Writing Center I have to have it ready by Friday afternoon and I got killer headache when I came to the comp lab :( Not feeling good at all...

Freezing wind outside doesn't help. My radio speaks only Welsh and I don't understand it. I have to sleep fully clothed in order to stay warm in my room... Perhaps I'll buy another duvet on Saturday, when I have to go to do Christmas shopping. I haven't bought a single gift.
If I want to have my poems checked by the teacher before submitting my portfolio, I have to give them in this week.

One of my teachers is obsessed with Gareth Gates- he hates him. :p And was to pass out - he told- when he heard that one of his ex-students has written some of his songs! And a one Will Young's song, I think...

Too bad this comp room is too far from home, I could go to get some aspirin/painkillers and come back. I'm stuck here...

Hwicce was rather difficult, so we called him sometimes by his own name, sometimes by the way he pronounces his, name "whycii" or something like that.

Moggy (KD owner) - well, in my mind I pronounce Moggy totally different from the way English speakers pronounce it, so I called him by real name. :p

hmm... who else? Molk, Ski? Both names in use, same with Poppa - I think... but I don't seem to remember his real name anymore! :eek: And Yav and Surreal... same goes to them... :eek:

Most people I've met are KDers... I know I miss people here, from my listing...

I got the SE DVD (which I still haven't seen all of), a TTT calendar, a lot of clothes, socks (of course.. It wouldn't be Christmas without socks), a Spongebob Squarepants toilet seat cover (you gotta love my brother), the PotO soundtrack, and 50 dollars from my grandparents.

And since SOMEONE forgot to get me the TTT soundtrack, I'm buying it.

And I got to see TTT again tonight. :D And my brother got married. And I got to see several of my friends at the wedding.. including one I *ahem* somewhat fancy. (Don't tell Snape).

My friends and I exchanged gifts, too. I got a Snape key chain (surprised?), Harry Potter toothpaste (bubblegum flavored, it squirts out in the shape of a lightning bolt), a stuffed animal (a cat), a cat paperweight type thing, and sweet pea hand lotion from them.

Then the Blue Peter presenters were presenting awards to the best popstar of 2002, there were 4 nominees, Will Young, Yoko Ono, Aragorn and Frodo.... Yoko won, and Aragorn was comforting Will telling him it was a silly award.....

Well it was for a role as the only female hobbit, so I called up and won, yey for me, and it was being filmed in the Convent's Garden in my school, so I went down.

Then I was flicking through a magazine and saw Dobby with my bag with my stuff in it, and I started to scream "A HOUSE ELF HAS MY BAG!!"

Then Peter Jackson said to me, he didn't need a female love interest for Frodo anymore... And I woke up.

They're normal to me, I hardly ever sleep without dreaming - you know you get best dreams if you let your alarm on snooze and let it wake you up every 6 minutes...

once I dreamed that I woke up and walked to the otherside of my room to get water from the sink and passed out on the way there. But I actually was sleeping in my bed all the time... :rolleyes: That was actually weird feeling - I've never passed out...

2003 means new year in life, another page on the book which will end someday and no one ever knows how soon.
it means more time away from my family and people who I don't know but call friends. It means more time with people I have nothing in common with and spend time just to spend time with.

I get up in the morning because of my faith, because I believe that almost 2000 years ago, Christ died for ME. And I don't want to waste that sacrifice. But that's me, and I know there are some people out there that don't believe that.

FleurD, college is fun. I don't know anyone who hasn't liked college much better than they did school. :)

The celebrations are over... now we get on with living the year...

In general, I think it's going to be OK in the long run. Well, at least when I'm feeling postive I think that... ;) Mainly, though, I think you've got more chance of having a good year if you face it thinking that it'll be all right. Optimism all the way. :)

I got into a discussion/argument with one of my friends last night about Legolas.. she "loves" him.. and I was trying to figure out why. After an hour or so, I realized a horrible truth. You take two equally as cool characters, two characters equally as important to the plot of a story (i.e. Legolas and Gimli) and people will always like the one that's better looking.

So what does it leave those of us in the world who aren't bad looking (but no exceedingly beautiful) and aren't extremely talented? Will we be passed up each time for someone equal or lesser in strength and personality, but greater in beauty?

Seriosly, though, everyone has their own preconceived idea of what beauty is. For example:

Take two women, one a Hawaiian princess, skinny, long dark hair, bathing suit, lei, do I really have to go into details? And the other, a large, dark haired and eyes, big furry coat Eskimo. Each have the same education, similar personalities, and similar interests (I bet they're just the best of friends, don't you?). If you ask a Hawaiian guy, or any other male in the world for that matter, to choose one to accompany him on a cruise down the Pacific, they would most definately choose the Hawaiian princess. BUT, get an Alaskan native (and by that I mean and Inuit) and they would pick the large, seal fur ALASKAN beauty.

See, beauty comes from propaganda. Now adays, women think they have to be as skinny as sticks with large chests and thieghs and a peaches and cream complexion to get noticed. Kinda like Barbie(R). But, to the Inuit, the larger a woman, the better. It means the husband takes care of her and feeds her much. And in the Renaisance, you notice many of the women have round-ish bellies in the paintings. They thought that meant they were good for breeding (sometimes I think people speak of my own sex as if they were an animal. Yuck. But this is what my history teacher said so...)

So, I believe the old saying holds true: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Another example: Put Aragorn, Legolas and Oliver Wood in a lineup. Different people would pick different characters for the "Who looks more attractive in the movie" poll. Again, all those "21 hottest stars under 21" lists are bogus because they're always made by the same people. I took a list like that to school once and my guy-analyzing friend flipped through it saying: "Cute, not so cute, cute, not hot, ugly, Hot, hot, cute, SO NOT hot..." etc. Also, again, it's propaganda. Beauty is like fashion. Look at the eighties vs the nineties. It was considered "cool" to get a major perm in the eighties, but the nineties was all about straight hair. In the early nineteen hundreds, women were supposed to be conservative(ish). Now, everyone's trying to dress like Britney Spears. Does anyone see my point here? If it's in the magazines, people will do it.** They don't care what it says as long as Seventeen or Teen People OK's it.

Um, OK, I think I'm done. And I think I've just gone overboard on my point. So I'll shut up now.

(**Footnote: this is, of course, excluding the ones who do not read magazines or enjoy being different and doing exactly the oposite of what the magazines say)

That is a depressing thought, Colli... I guess the answer to it is that people don't function completely like animals. Partly but not completely. It might be instinct to always go for the good looking one, but as humans we are capable of thinking about someone's personality as well as their looks... of considering and realising "hey, that person looks good, but they aren't actually all that nice," and vice versa. Sure, some people don't bother to think, but in a way this is quite a useful selecting tool - people that only think about looks are probably not people you really want to be with anyway. As humans, we can rise above our instincts - at least, that's what I think. Psychologists might disagree. ;)

I agree... somewhat. Human beings in general usually look for TWO qualities in a mate: Physical beauty and a good personality.

But there was one thing that irks me (and actually, it doesn't really have much to do with your argument). Everyone does it all the time, often in every day conversation, even I do it, but...

Humans ARE animals. Heck, we even belong to the kingdom TITLED "Animalia". But people still try to seperate humans from animals, as if we're some superior thing, above them. And many people believe we ARE above them. Well, call me a freaky animal-loving biologist, but we aren't as far above them as people think.

Every animal has different qualities. Dogs have great noses, cheetas have great speed, cats have great reflexes, apes use tools. Humans are distinguishable by their large brain power which usually leads to even larger heads. We still act upon instinct even though we are capable of thought and speech. We still act like animals. I mean, have you ever heard of a chimpanzee warlord?

OK, that was entirely off topic. But as you can all see from my previous post, I am in a very "intellectual" thinking mood tonight, and had to express an opinion... When my head clears and I become stupid again, I may disagree entirely with what I said... Or not understand it at all.

I agree that a lot of people are quite shallow in what they look for in a partner, but not everyone is. I agree with Mellon that the people that do look for looks are generally those who probably aren't who you'd really want to be with in the long run (well I know I wouldn't want to be). I realised that not so long ago and also that meeting someone that will love you in return will often spring up on you when you least expect it. When you do meet that person (and I'm almost certain you will) they'll love you for who you are, not what you look like. It does happen and it will happen, remember that. :)

As for humans acting like animals, I agree to a certain extent. When you watch a film, because it's not at all personal (seeing as you're not met with a real person, all you have is their image), most people will go for those they find most physically attractive. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, so long as they take a more balanced view with real people. I have crushes on several different famous people, mostly based on what they look like, but I don't base who I fancy in real life on people's looks. Obviously, I can't speak for most of the boys I know, but I know there are definitely quite a few who look for personality over looks.

Ravenclaw, I disagree. :D Humans are, scientifically (and sometimes personality-wise ;)), animals, but we are higher. We have a higher level of thinking, and I believe in God and the Creation, and that we were created higher than other animals. But that's off-topic. :)

I know not all people are as shallow as others... but how are people even going to get to know less gorgeous people if their instincts tell them to go for the more beautiful? Except in a world like we are, the internet, you see a person's face before their heart or their mind. BOOM. Your judgement has been made.

Ravenclaw, I'm not sure I entirely understand your first post. :D So if in the Renaissance, larger stomachs were better, that was considered beauty? What of the stick-woman, the woman with no curves and a twig-like waist? So she's ignored, because she's not what society perceives as beautiful.

Remus, your post goes with films in general, but I believe LotR is different.. because a lot of people already know the characters. People who probably didn't even take notice of Legolas when they read FotR.. and then fell all over him when they saw the movie. That just isn't right, to me. And it's incredibly disheartening.

I think this thought about love and beauty (and freedom and truth ;)) has been running through my head for at least a year... because I went from being an incredibly typical person swooning for awesome characters (like Aragorn) and hot people to what I am now: still swooning for the KING, but also finding a weird affinity for Snape, Lucius, Tavington, and Grima ( :eek: ). And now I've fallen in love with the phantom of PotO.

On that note, I rented Sense and Sensibility tonight! :D

The better you get to know someone, the more beautiful they become.:) All of my friends, IMO, are lovely attractive people.:) Would I think that if I wasn't friends with them? Maybe. Maybe not. And if I see someone physically attractive acting like a jerk, somehow they seem a lot less attractive.;)

I don't swoon for Legolas the Pretty Elf or Frodo the Beautiful Hobbit. (no offense to Legolas or Frodo fans:o ) I love Sam the Fat Hobbit and Elrond the Balding Elf-lord.:rolleyes: :D Legolas can pose and shoot things all he wants, but...I've really never connected with his character. So to me, Legolas would be a nice guy to have around during an Orc attack, but not a lot else.:o ;) And I wouldn't trade chubby, stubborn little Sam for anything in the world.:)

People look for very different things in who they percieve as attractive. Some women find the 'Man's Man' image, hair, stubble, sweat and muscles to be the most appealing. While others like pretty guys, slim, non-hairy, smooth skin etc...

But I like to think, that once you've gotten to know someone, you find their personality the most attractive quality.

(And FYI, I find both Aragorn The Stubbled, and Legolas The Pretty to be very swoonful :D But also, Merry and Pippin, Mmmm.)

As an explaination, did anyone else watch that BBC programme about Human Instinct? Why we look for what we do in possible partners was one of the subjects covered. It suggested that, on initial contact, what modern humans look for is the status of the person, and how any children could benefit from those genetics passed on.

So while before broad shoulders and obvious testosterone-a-rama may have been an indication of someone who could plough the family fields well and bring home a deer supper or whatever that was then.

NOW, we look for someone who might well be wealthy. And that means not much work, which means smoother skin, less muscular build etc...

(Personally I think that only goes part way to explaining it. People are messy creatures in the love life department)

Just wanted to mention that it's not only Hollywood that jewels the idea of "love at first sight" but loads of literature does it as well :) And that's the kind of love that I don't believe in - not Romeo and Juliet for me, no Tristan and Isolde, no Arwen and Aragorn - it's not only "at first sight" what I disagree with, but the idea of everlasting feelings of love and desire :(

Love takes knowing, but how can I know anyone when I don't even know myself? :confused:

Damn, Laura got there before me ;) I watched it too. And Laura, I tried to email you, but hotmail said you needed to delete your emails.

I think it was Pythorgoras who discovered the ratio, I can't remember it was about three years ago this documentary was on...

I remember watching GMTV years ago, and this woman blamed her pmt and hormones on murdering her husband! lol

So, basically, while we all agree that what WE go for, ultimately, is a wonderful personality and good character... who here will deny flirting based on looks? I won't. I've done it. :D I can be shallow and vain and rude... and I'm a hypocrite. :rolleyes: ;)

There are people at my school who most would perceive as very good looking... but because I know them, in and out, and because I've known them since I was 5, they disgust me. And they are very ugly people to me. So I get your point. :) But once again, if people, by instinct, go for looks/position/resemblance to Alan Rickman, that really sucks for people without those qualities.

Really.

So now I retreat back to my room, where I will listen to Phantom of the Opera once again and cry for him at the end when he lets Christine go.

Here I can agree - security, how often we think security is love of kind... I mean, mostly people stick together not because of love, but security... so many marriages base on security. But security is only a part of love - it's not all.

Haven't got a name for it yet... and the whole story's really in my mind; that's unusual... :p

I had a dream where I was in London and we'd exitted some building onto Leister Square and it started raining unbrellas... So we ducked into a cafe (I had a feeling someone was with me because I kept talking to them) and discovered Gandalf and Dumbledore arguing about who had the longest beard....

Anyways, my company spoke up and I realized it was (of all people) Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He became judge in this contest and declared Gandalf the winner (with some wise cracks, of course, but I don't remember what they were) and Dumbledore got mad and turned him into a rat...

I've gotta stop watching all those Buffy season two re-runs...

Not that scary, but weird nonetheless with book characters... Plus when I woke up I had a sudden need for cheese.

I had my exams before the holidays. I think it's better. That means no homework and the 'going back to school' thing is easier too because you don't have to worry about exams.

I'm still out. Cause of exams, there were some days I didn't have to go to school, so I basically got a month for winter vacation (the days I had off from exams plus the three set weeks). :p That's a longer Christmas vacation than anyone I know and it is SO fun to rub everyone's noses in it! :D!

To top it off, I also get a week in February, in whioch I'm going to visit my friends in Brussles and head up to London and catch a play or two. Thats one thing I love about London more than the shopping, more than the sights, more than the restaurants, more than the people speaking propper English and not having to say "Ma'fish Falluce" all the time. The theater.

I've written my fair share of high-rated fics. Heck, that Ron Christmas fic I posted? I realized it wasn't G. Had to edit it. Took me half an hour. I think it's OK now. I don't think I've ever written a real G rated fic... I've always put them at LEAST PG because I have a tendancy to slip in some words that parents don't like.

The dark situations is the hard part for me. I mean, when I write about dark stuff (I won't go into details) It's difficult for me to rate it because I don't know where the barrier between PG-13, R and NC-17 stand. Usually, I mostly make it R if I'm not sure. I mean, there was some killer stuff I wrote when I was twelve that almost seemed NC-17. I guess it was all the movies I watched... But I don't post those fics for some reason. Sometimes I even scare myself. I like to post the more mild ones and not the Steven King-ish ones.

Speaking of, anyone read the Diary of Ellen Rimbauer, "My Life at Rose Red?" It's a good book, but again, it's Steven King so it's for the mature audiances. Some of you might have seen the Made-for-TV movie about Rose Red. But the book is different, they make you think it's a real diary... Quiet, Rav, before you go overboard.

It snowed like mad today! According to my mum it hasn't snowed like this in about 12 years! :eek: :D

I made a REAL snowman, and left him outside! :D We got to leave school early! :D And I have to walk a mile of heath... and it was so weird, five inches of white chrunghy stuff...Shoes not designed for snow though... But it SNOWED!

The whole of our ear had a hugggeee snow fight, my friend Maria kept on slipping, and falling on her bum! It was so funny :D

I absolutely am HATING snow this month. I've missed 7 days because of it.. 7 days of school! Including today.. Days I have to make up in May when it's WARM out and I'm supposed to be graduating.. *grr* It snowed all day yesterday and nearly killed me trying to get home from Newark. But it's actually like 34 degrees outside, so the sun is kind of melting it.

Isn't it horrible when it's 35 degrees and it feels like a heat wave? I'm leaving to visit Florida on Saturday.. I swear, my blood will positively BOIL in that 60-65 degree weather they're having. :D

Woo, the snow here was pretty cool, we had a blizzard during break, but it had all melted by lunch because the clouds decided to move on, leaving sunshine :rolleyes:. But it started snowing again in the afternoon and it hasn't really stopped since!(such a novelty in Brighton) I'm just hoping that there'll be enough snow to close the school tomorrow (it might happen...)

As for smilies, leo uses ":nose:" religiously, and I know quite a few people who use ":barf:" every once and again. The sleepy one is just pointless, and I don't like ":cool:".

I really don't see any problem with homosexual people, and I don't understand why countries, groups of people and the like are against them. Personally, they have never done anything to hurt me and even if they did, I wouldn't hold a vendetta against their choice of lifestyle. Hmm, I find it harsh to blame god for everything that's gone wrong in the world. I believe that we're his creation, and we got out of hand. He gave us the ability to make our own choices, and I think we didn't turn out exactly how he wanted us too, but he won't interfer because he said he wouldn't in the bible. That's why 9/11 happened, and the holocaust...or you could take a pessimistic sort of view about it, and those things happened for population control....just like the cause for abortion. As for homosexuality, people are just ignorant jackarses. I can't stand prejudice or racism. All of it just doesn't make any sense. It's going to be interesting in the future since white people are becoming a minority, I wonder how we'll deal with it. I hope that the non-white people will be the better people and not make us needlessly suffer as we did to them.

I really wanted to stay out of the homosexuality discussion, because I don't want to offend anyone, but you guys are confusing homophobic with thinking homosexuality is wrong.

A "phobia" is a fear, you all know that. I'm not afraid of homosexuality, I don't have an irrational disgust towards it, but I think it's wrong.

You all have a right to believe what you what about God, or the gods, or whatever. I believe in God, I believe in the Bible. But God is NOT homophobic. He created the world, he has a right to declare good things good, and bad things bad. And he says homosexuality is bad. Case closed. He also says sex before marriage is wrong, but that's an ENTIRELY separate argument which I don't have the energy to get into.

That being said, I'm not homophobic. I have friends that are gay, and I don't agree with them, but they're still my friends, and I value their opinions. I value amrael's opinions, and I think she's a very smart and insightful poster (with GREAT taste in villians!).

Like Colli said, its easier to blame things on God (or whatever you call the higher power amongst us). Its easy to put the blame on a seemingly distant Divine rather than take responsiblity ourselves. Like Colli said, bad things that happen (on any scale) should help us grow and change, and take RESPONSIBILITY. I am not really just referring to 9/11 here, but to the world in general. Its time humanity took the responsibilty to OBEY God and take care of each other. (Ok, that's WAY off track now, sorry)

But about the homosexuality thing....I normally avoid heated discussion about this kind of thing, because I don't like to be involved in anything that is divisive and that causes disunity. But I just thought that I would put my two cents in as well. I am not afraid of it either. Nevertheless, I believe that it is not a natural state of being. I have known homosexuals, but that doesn't mean I condone their lifestyle.(Though of course not all homosexuals make the same lifestyle choices ). That also does not mean I hate gay people. Au contrair! In fact, my own brother has struggled with this issue for much of his life....
Maybe this will sound really mean, but I believe homosexuality can be overcome. I know many people do not think of it as something that even needs to be 'overcome,' but that is just my religious beliefs.
My religion also stresses the importance of chastity before marriage, (I'm 18, still a virgin thank God... and plan to be for a while yet, hehe. ;) But as Colli said, that's a WHOLE different topic)

One man, he was gay, but a person on the panel (ooh, an old man :rolleyes: ) said he wouldn't give him the money because he was gay! But would be friends with him... Argh, made no sense, he thought he was a lovely bloke and all, but wouldnt give him the money! why?!

Hmm...I am a presbyterian, I don't even know if I spelled that right. I don't practice very much and I am 16 and not a virign. I really don't know my religion's stance on homosexuality. Personally, I don't think people that follow a religion and take all their ideals from it really experiance life to its fullest. I think that those people are ignorantand obtuse. Life should be about discovery and finding things out for yourself. I couldn't live life if I didn't question things, and find out why things are the way they are. It does leave me a few gaps though. Like how were we created and what happens after we die...that why I think religion came into place to begin with, to answer those questions so people would be as peace with themselves. I'm sorry if that offends some people, but that just how I feel. I could never just go through following the person in front of me...what happens when you get to the proverbial cliff? There's just too many possibilities out there for me to choose one way of life.

Kain, you're only 16???? Shocker of the week!!! I always assumed you were early 20s...

For me, religion isn't just a side hobby, it isn't something you "do" with your parents a few Sundays out of the year. My religion, my beliefs about God, those ARE my life. They are my rules for life, and I don't think that's ignorant. It's my discipline, and staying within what I believe God wants me to do actually helps me to grow. I just grow within those boundaries. I don't think by not having sex and not drinking and not doing drugs and not swearing that I'm missing out on life experience. Do you feel better after having had sex because you now have more life experience than me, in that regard?

I know there are tons of possibilities out there, but that's kinda what religion is. My religion doesn't have a specific name, but I'm a Christian. And not Christian in the sense of "everyone who believes in God and Jesus", Christian in the sense of following the words of the Bible to the fullest extent. And to me, the idea of God creating the world seems a lot more probable than a big bang or a slime pit, and it's what I believe, not what I was told.

Another thought, if your "religion" is the church you go to occasionally, or the church your parents go to, and you don't even know what it's stance is, then I might suggest that it's not your religion. Religion isn't like a custom user text, it isn't a title, it's a way of life.

You may not be able to control your feelings, at least initially, I believe you CAN control who you love. I'm not one of those "There's only one right person out there for you" people, I believe you can meet a truly wonderful person and make yourself fall in love with that person. Movies and TVs shows aren't always right. ;)

I still don't believe homosexuality is even natural in humans. God didn't create us sinners (contrary to what many people believe), God created us good, and sinless. All evil was brought into the world by Satan (through Adam and Eve, you've all heard the story). And I think if we're going to judge whether something's good by whether or not animals do it.. we shouldn't rule out cannibalism.. ;) And animals can't sin, so it completely misses the point, anyway. :D

:trout: Elfea. Thanks for the 10 cents. ;) The Bible may have been written by HAND by men, but God sent the Holy Spirit to inspire those men. Someone who has truly studied the Bible, even if from a nonreligious angle, and realizes that evidence shows that the original texts were indeed written over the time span that they were written in, and who sees how everything fits together so perfectly, beyond human ability to do so, would have to see that Deity was behind it. People I'm not willing to believe are men that come in 1900-2000 years after Christ lived and try to say "Hey, look at my creed book. This is what God told me." And then they go changing it every few years saying that they never really saw in the first place. That they were mistaken.

Try to imagine you starting to write a story. And say you write something that you think's gonna happen in the future. Say thousands of years later it happens. And someone writes it down. And every detail of what's going on fits together. Look at JKR. Even with her constant editing. Even with her editors, all the publishers, there are still mistakes. There are still plot points that don't quite fit. You'd think in a volume as large as the Bible, it'd be full of them. Mere men did not write the Bible. :)

I think the argument about gay animals isn't "animals do it, so it must be right," it's "animals do it, so it must be natural - not something you choose." If God made the world, then things which are natural surely can't be bad?

And I feel I can't agree with the idea that you can be in control of who you love - a lot of problems are caused by the fact that you can't. Where would Romeo and Juliet be if they'd sensibly chosen not to fall for people who their families hated? (The answer: they'd be a lot less dead ;). Of course, they'd also make a much less good story. ;) )

As a commeted Christian the way I interperate it is that it is not wrong to have feelings, it's wrong to act upon them

I also have a Youth bible which I find immensly useful and that pointed out that homosexuality is mentioned twice in the bibel, once alongside a whole load of other sexual sins and another time with eating too much.

There is no worse sin. We are all sinners, whether we lie or have a homosexual relationship. Perhaps people should just stop being so hypocritical.

Colli, if you believe in something that someone else wrote, that's following them...and you said yourself that that men wrote the bible many years ago, and that these men were special men, inspired by the holy spirit....Even men of god have biased towards certain things and it reflects through unconcious actions. The bible is not perfect, the bible is not the be all-end all. Since men wrote it, it is bound to have flaws. As for my religion, I formed my own opinions and thought about everything I needed to, I call myself a presbyterian, but that is just a label, I live my own religion, with my owns opinions and beliefs. This entire debate started with homsexuals, and their standing. Some people believe that they just can't help it, they're born that way. Well maybe that's true...other think they can control it and they choose who they have feelings for, and choose there lifestyle. That could be true also. Who knows, no one does. Because of the fact that we arn't the very first humans on earth, all our opinions are biased by view of our parents, and our parents-parents. Colli if you were raised in a Ku Klox Klan household, you would more then likely believe in their ideals, just because that's why your parents believed in. If you were raised believing that the color 'red' was actually called 'purple', you would go around calling 'red' things 'purple', until society called you different and you may change, you may not. The point is, I can't hold my opinions in the highest regard, because it's the way I was raised, but I also believe that once we come more of age we start basing more of our opinions on experiance, and the people we are around, more then what we were raised with. Humans are imperfect because we can think. As long as we can think, we will never be able to have world peace, or eliminate all the evil in the world....and back to my point (kind of), that's why I find it harder to believe in the bible, because it was written by men. So, there ya go, I guess...:)

Actually, I think my Mum belives in God - and our school education is biased - our religious studies class is Lutheran. (but our parents have the choice to put us to Orthodox or non-religious class...)

I cannot know if some people can change themself and their sexuality, but I cannot know if people can't stop being what they are.
Both opinions are possible.

Rev - quite agree. Could also point out that our lives are different and the society and living conditions have changed loads from the times when Bible was written. But is it taken in account when reading it? When we were taught Bible at school, it was. But it was because what our teacher was - she was great... (well, actually, can't remember doing that much religious studies, we mostly had these debates about - tralalaaa- "gay priests - woman priests" allowed or not... and about making babies :p and stuff :p)

I agree with most of what yous ay too Rev, but I'm being raised in an racist, homophobic, pro-war household, and I'm certainly not racist, most of my friends are black, and certain;y not anti-gay or homophobic, and I am most certainly anti-war, but could not go to the march!

When it comes to things like that, I never listened to my parents, I was like "So what, a man and a man, or a woman and a woman love each other, so they're kissing... And the point is?" or "So, Sandra's skin is dark brown, doesn't mean she's bad!" or "Somehow killing all those Iraqis for Bush's pleasue is a good idea!"

I cant follow m religeon, or ex-religeon I should say, not because men wrote it or anything, its because I can't follow something anyone has written, if JKR or JRRT had written the bible and still said the things I don't agree, then I wouldn't follow it. I cant be dictated to, I can't sit in Religeous Education lessons, and be told that somehow, a bloke called Jesus made some bloke called Bartimaeus who was blind, well, not blind, he could see! :rolleyes:

At the time the bible was written, things were a lot different...the same debate is used for the American constitution and some of the rights that people are given these days...also voting procedures. I am of a similar mind as Rev (never thought I would be saying that) and I have adopted my own version of christianity.

Only comment on the homosexuality issue is that Jesus said to love the sinners as well as the "good" people.

I still cant believe that the catholic church wants to keep the priesthood as an all male preserve. It isnt mentioned anywhere that it should be that way

It has become a saying in Finnish - the translation.

I think I was influenced when I was younger by a kid's book where a passage saying along the lines "everyone's going for the same God by their own ways" - it made sense to me then.
I mean, if there can be only one God - then there must just be different ways to him/her/it. Not all the other religions can be wrong - not only one way can be right.

If there is God he/she/it is way above us and therefore we're foolish (sorry, if use of that word feels offensive, not meant to :)) to belive that we can interpret things as he/she/it wants them be.

I believe in possibilities - when it'll come for me to choose my way... *shrugs* hope that day won't come too soon.

FleurD, put yourself in our place. Saddam Hussein is sitting in Iraq, he's been making all these bombs and missiles for YEARS, biding his time. We know he has him, that fact is obvious.

Al Qaeda wasn't really hurting us during the Clinton admin, was it? But he knew they were there, he knew they were a threat. But no one wanted a war.. they wanted "peace". Maybe if Clinton would have been more aggressive 9-11 wouldn't have happened.

So Saddam Hussein's just in Iraq, he's not hurting anyone! The world wants PEACE right? We have peace!

Not defending ourselves does not ensure peace. Who says we should wait until Iraq attacks us, and more people die, for us to attack? We didn't ask for 9-11.

There are things that have happened to me that have confirmed to me, that what I beleive is true.

I'm not saying all of you are wrong, I'm just saying that due to things that have happened in my life I think what I believe is true, no matter what my parents think.

The fact isn't obvious, if it was, then why were there peace marches all over the world yesterday? 1 million people marched in this very city yesterday, against the war, 1 million people from all over the country, and I'm sure there are many more millions who couldn't make the march who disagree with the war terribly.

War isnever right. War is never just. As far as most Brits are concerned, we haven't seen enough evidence to go to war. In WW2 there was pleanty of evidence.

No one wants war. And until we see proper evidence, REAL evidence, then I'll carry on campaigning.

But the sad fact is. We're discussing war. :(

You know what I've done the past week? Since Sunday morning at about 7 AM, I've been sitting in an eletrically-challenged county, in my freezing cold house, covered in blankets and 3 layers of clothing, CRYING.

Ice storms SUCK.

But at 1:05 today, I sat down my (brother's) copy of Hitchhiker's Guide and stared at my ceiling wondering for the grillionth time if the power was EVER going to get fixed, and to my utter astonishment, the lights came on.

Thus ensued 5 minutes of running around the housing SHRIEKING, and then I got online. :D Nice to see you all again! ;)

The closest I've come to reading HHG was yesterday when I watched the whole of it on DVD at my boyfriend's house. It seemed bizarre (to say the least). My philosophy teacher is constantly quoting from it so I understood loads of the more philosophical meanings to it (which is quite scary). I really want to read it now, it seemed to be the sort of book I'd end up reading. :D

Yeah, I find it quite sad too, especially when people have written really nice comments in my book and I know I'll probably never see them again after the exams. But then again, it is a very happy thought that I only have another 8 hours of school left.

I can't remember what I was assessed on - it all disappeared into a blur of panic when I was trying to think what to say.

Hello again, I'm back after a short absence and wanted to check in with my House:) How is everyone doing?

I got carded today at the arts and crafts store because I wanted to buy workable spray fixative for graphite drawings and the cashier thought it was paint and people under 18 can't buy spray paint. She thought I was under 18! I'm 30! What a compliment, eh?:) Then again, she also mistook fixative for paint...*grumble*

Speaking of British TV shows...was anyone here a viewer of Peak Practice when it was on? That Jamie Bamber *licks lips* I never got to see the show as it doesn't play here but I have seen pictures from it. And pictures of Jamie Bamber are all good:) Was the show good or not? I love BBC America -- it's pretty much all I watch now -- it and HBO. They've never played Peak Practice on it but they've played Father Ted, Ballykissangel, The Office, Graham Norton (hilarious!), and one of my faves, Coupling. They really are wonderful. i could do without seeing Ground Force and Changing Rooms 4 times a day each, but the rest of the stuff is awesome. Jonathan Creek and Cracker (Robbie Coltrane) are both excellent mystery shows.
