View Full Version : Favorite Snape Moment

So, what's everyone's favorite Snape moment?

Movie: When Snape notices Harry isn't paying attention in class and says, "Or maybe some of you are in possession of abilities so formidable that you feel the need to not...pay...attention." Sarcastic teacher wit at its best.

Books: In POA, when he corners Black in the Whomping Willow and goes berserk.

:D I don't think you need the spoiler tags, but thanks. :) Maybe a mod could move this to the Leaky Cauldron so we can talk about the book and the movie?

In the movie... my favorite scene has to be Snape's dungeon in Sorceror's Stone. Especially when he wraps his cloak around him and looks all swoony. :swoon:

In the books... when he catches Harry and Ron in Chamber of Secrets arriving late... and they've just been making fun of him. And then in Prisoner of Azkaban when he's trying to read the Marauder's Map.. and when he catches Harry after the Hogsmeade incident. And then in Goblet of Fire when Sirius transforms at the end... rawr. :D And when he's reading the Witch Weekly article and Hermione and Harry are getting SO mad at him. He's so mean. :swoon: :notworthy

Ouch, Colli. You got here first and got all the good bits for yourself... ;)

So lets see: in film I'll take the duel with Lockhart and his expression when Draco summons the snake and he says something like 'I'll get rid of it' and hears Harry in parseltongue.

A not exactly Snape moment in PS (book) at the end, when Dumbledore is talking to Harry about Snape NOT wanting to kill him and Harry says 'Snape...' and Dumbledore says 'It's Professor Snape...'

Love it.

More later...

I hate and love Snape.

He's wonderful character, but I'd never want to meet him; he'd turn me to Neville... :o

He's loads of fun, where ever he's mentioned... :)

From movies - Duelling scene :swoon: Dungeon scene from PS - with the speech :swoon:

That look he gets in COS while suggesting that maybe Harry was just in the wrong place at the wrong time is priceless. It's as if it physically pains him to say it. God bless Alan Rickman.

Movie: When Snape seems to levitate and glide up to the dueling platform.

Movie: The way he says, "Expelliarmus!"

Colli

Expelliarmus! :swoon: I can still hear him saying it...

And I love how he turns around and kinda snaps his hand in the air and beckons Malfoy up... greatness. :swoon:

And I love in TSS (in the extended scene) how he gets REALLY close to Harry's face and continues lecturing him. :swoon:

I think we need pictures.

Ok, more.

In the Chamber of Secrets movie, during the duel, the look Snape gives Harry after he's spoken Parsentongue. He's all "What the..?"

Of course, usually by then I had dissolved into a driveling mess, but I THINK I remember seeing that. :D

Saryn, good one! :)

Colli, I don't think I will EVER get tired of your Snape obsession (I mean, love). ;)

I can't remember too many book moments as it's been a while since I've read them (that will soon change, since I'm definitely rereading them before OotP comes out!), but one of my favorite movie moments, from Sorcerer's Stone:

"You'd better be careful... people might think you're.. [Harry glares at Snape, and Snape gets this hilariously suspicious look on his face with wide eyes]... UP to something!" :D

In the book COS when Harry and Ron are peeking into the Great Hall after arriving late and are discussing the whereabouts of Snape. He comes creeping up and says in that nasty silky voice of his, "Or maybe he was waiting to find out why you weren't on teh train.." God I wish they'd let Alan Rickman deliver that line! I think I'd have dribbled from my theater seat onto the floor, instead we get nasty old Filch.

OK, still can't think of the movie scene, but here's another from the book, after Harry and Ron throw the firework and Hermione steals the ingredients for the Polyjuice Potion (deleted scene? *crosses fingers*)

"If I ever find out who threw this," Snape whispered, "I shall make sure that person is expelled."

Harry arranged his face into what he hoped was a puzzled expression. Snape was looking right at him, and the bell that rang ten minutes later could not have been more welcome.
"He knew it was me," Harry told Ron and Hermione as they hurried back to Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. "I could tell." [no loser, what makes you think that?]

"Snape can't prove it was you," Ron said reassuringly to Harry. What can he do?"

"Knowing Snape, something foul," said Harry

And I just thought of one from PoA I like, I'll be right back and edit this message. :)

(edit) At the welcoming feast in PoA

"Look at Snape!" [gladly!] Ron hissed in Harry's ear.

Professor Snape, the Potions master, was staring along the staff table at Professor Lupin. It was common knowledge that Snape wanted the DaDA job, but even Harry, who hated Snape, was startled at the expression twisting his thin, sallow face. It was beyond anger: it was loathing. Harry knew that expression only too well; it was the look Snape wore every time he set eyes on Harry.

Oooh and who else hopes beyond all imagination that the Snape/Neville's grandma/boggart scene stays in the movie? I'd die of happiness to see Alan Rickman in Neville's grandmother's clothes.

"Nothing," shrugged Neville. "Want a game of Exploding Snap?"

"Er-not now-I was going to go to the library and do that vampire essay for Lupin-"

"I'll come with you!" said Neville brightly. "I haven't done it either!"
[...]
He broke off with a small gasp, looking over Harry's shoulder. It was Snape. Neville took a quick step behind Harry. [:D]

"And what are you two doing here?" said Snape, coming to a halt and looking from one to the other. "An odd place to meet-"

To Harry's immense disquiet, Snape's black eyes flicked to the doorways on either side of them, and then to the one-eyed witch.

We're not - meeting here," said Harry. "We just - met here." [good one, Harry]

"Indeed?" said Snape. "You have a habit of turning up in enexpected places, Potter, and you are very rarely there for no good reason.... I suggest the pair of you return to Gryffindor Tower, where you belong."

 All those long months of waiting for the first movie to see Snape refereeing the quidditch match and was it in the movie? Not a chance. The lack of shots of said Potions master on a broomstick meant we certainly didn't get the answer to the much asked question 'what does a wizard wear under his robes?'

Another of my favourite Snape quotes (that actually made it into the movie!) A beautiful little speech:

"As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses...I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death..."

Does this sound like a man who doesn't want his current job and is lusting after the DADA spot?

Ahh, anyone care to contribute? :D

I love it everytime he gets angry at Harry or Sirius. :swoon:

I love how he got to pick into Harry's memory and see all the times Harry got picked on by Dudley and gang.

He was sitting under the Sorting Hat, and it was telling him he would do well in Slytherin

...

"Did you see everything I saw?" Harry asked, unsure whether he wanted to hear the answer.

"Flashes of it," said Snape, his lip curling.

Hehehe.. SOO funny. I'm glad Severus knows that about the Sorting.

I really wish Snape and Harry would've had a moment of understand (not liking, just understanding). Because
Now they've both seen rather pathetic sides of each other's past, and they realize they're not too different

Just really cool stuff between the protagonist and my favorite Potions master. :D

My favorite Snape moment never happened in the books :o , someone on the threads has a funny profile, something like this;

Ah, but with all this talk about GoF and OotP possibly being split into two movies each, do the contracts provide for keeping the same adults all the way through a potential Book 7 movie? (and will they all still be around? We've already lost one Dumbledore...:()

lithorose's sig has the "...but I'm in Hufflepuff" exchange you listed as your Favorite Snape Moment That Never Was.

elfea, I also had thought that the rumor of Snape wanting the DADA spot was only that - but note that in OotP he confirmed to Umbridge that he had repeatedly applied for the DADA position. Of course, he could have done so just to add credibility to the speculation...

As for my favorite Snape Moment in OotP, it's hard to pick one out of all the Occlumency lesson scenes. Sometimes, like when he tells Harry "Yes. That is my job." it seems they're beginning to understand each other (inevitable considering the nature of the magic they're working with) and maybe hate each other a little less, but then there are setbacks like Snape's misinterpretation of Harry's reaction to seeing the Pensieve memories that kind of make me want to whack 'em both with a clue-by-four ;) ...I hope someday they can learn to be allies, if not friends; they're both beginning to realize they have more in common than either initially thought.

Colli

I don't know about liking teaching, but I suspect he does care for the students in the sense of genuinely wanting to teach them what they will likely need to know all too soon... anyone else notice that Umbridge took issue with Snape's teaching the fifth-years to make Strengthening Solution? That sounds like a potion with practical applications in the upcoming war, and I suspect the rest of Snape's curriculum is similarly useful. (Spoiler codes used as not all here have finished OotP)

Hi guys, I´m back to Snapedom. :D

Favourite Snape moments in OotP? There´s such a wide choice it´s hard to pick one!

I definitely like the line “Why, yes, I suppose I am”, that´s just ultra-cool Snapeness.

My favourite moment has to be in Umbridge´s office, when Harry is desperately trying to communicate to him what he saw and he just tells Harry if he wants him to blab nonsense at him he´ll give him a Blabbing Potion. I can just see him close the door of the office behind him in a completely composed and quiet way, and then the next second RUN off to the owlery or whatever means of communication he was using to alert the Order.

You may say what you want, this guy isn´t only a brilliant double agent, he´s a HERO!!!

I like this whole scene:

A minute or two later, he pushed open the kitchen door to find Sirius and Snape both seated at the long kitchen table, glaring in opposite directions. The silence between them was heavy with mutual dislike. A letter lay open on the table in front of Sirius.
'Er,' said Harry, to announce his presence.
Snape looked around at him, his face framed between curtains of greasy black hair.
'Sit down, Potter.'
'You know,' said Sirius loudly, leaning back on his rear chair legs and speaking to the ceiling, 'I think I'd prefer it if you didn't give orders here, Snape. It's my house, you see.'
An ugly flush suffused Snape's pallid face. Harry sat down in a chair beside Sirius, facing Snape across the table.
'I was supposed to see you alone, Potter,' said Snape, the familiar sneer curling his mouth, 'but Black — '
'I'm his godfather,' said Sirius, louder than ever.
'I am here on Dumbledore's orders.' said Snape, whose voice, by contrast, was becoming more and more quietly waspish, 'but by all means stay, Black, I know you like lo feel . . . involved.'
'What's that supposed to mean?' said Sirius, letting his chair fall back on to all four legs with a loud bang.
'Merely that I am sure you must feel — ah — frustrated by the fact that you can do nothing useful,' Snape laid a delicate stress on the word, 'for the Order.'
It was Sirius's turn to flush. Snape's lip curled in triumph as he turned to Harry.
The Headmaster has sent me to tell you, Potter, that it is his wish for you to study Occlumency this term.'
'Study what?' said Harry blankly.
Snape's sneer became more pronounced.
'Occlumency, Potter. The magical defence of the mind against external penetration. An obscure branch of magic, but a highly useful one.'
Harry's heart began to pump very fast indeed. Defence against external penetration? But he was not being possessed, they had all agreed on that . . .
'Why do I have to study Occlu — thing?' he blurted out.
'Because the Headmaster thinks it a good idea,' said Snape smoothly. 'You will receive private lessons once a week, but you will not tell anybody what you are doing, least of all Dolores Umbridge. You understand?'
'Yes,' said Harry. 'Who's going to be teaching me?'
Snape raised an eyebrow.
'I am,' he said.
Harry had the horrible sensation that his insides were melting.
Extra lessons with Snape — what on earth had he done to deserve this? He looked quickly round at Sirius for support.
'Why can't Dumbledore teach Harry?' asked Sirius aggressively. 'Why you?'
'I suppose because it is a headmasters privilege to delegate less enjoyable tasks,' said Snape silkily. 'I assure you I did not beg for the job.' He got to his feet. 'I will expect you at six o'clock on Monday evening, Potter. My office. If anybody asks, you are taking remedial Potions. Nobody who has seen you in my classes could deny you need them.'

And I like what happened after this too! :D

Favourite Snape moments...oh, goodie.

Book

My favourite Snape moment came in Book Five when he was fighting with Sirius. For some reason I thought "There goes the truce...out the window". I burst out laughing. Why, cause I'm an oddball!

Movie

That would have to be in Chamber of Secrets after Harry has just finished talking to the snake. The look Snape shoots him gave me shivers down my spine...but it did seem a bit unSnapeish. It was almost like he was sympathizing with Harry
