London, England; New York, New York; 15th January, 2003: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J K Rowling, the fifth in the best-selling series, has been scheduled for release on Saturday 21st June, 2003 in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia and in the English language in many countries, it was announced by the book’s English language publishers, Bloomsbury and_ Scholastic, to whom it has now been delivered._ The companies also announce that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is over one third longer than J K Rowling's extraordinary previous book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

In making the joint announcement, Nigel Newton, Chief Executive of Bloomsbury Publishing in Britain and Barbara Marcus, President of Scholastic Children’s Books in the United States said, “We are thrilled to announce the publication date._ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is absolutely superb and will delight all J K Rowling’s fans._ She has written a brilliant and utterly compelling new adventure, which begins with the words:

“The hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and a drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive …_ The only person left outside was a teenage boy who was lying flat on his back in a flowerbed outside number four.”

Later in the novel, J K Rowling writes:

“Dumbledore lowered his hands and surveyed Harry through his half-moon glasses._

‘It is time,’ he said, ‘for me to tell you what I should have told you five years ago, Harry._

Please sit down._ I am going to tell you everything.’”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is over 255,000 words compared to over 191,000 words in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire._ The new book is 38 chapters long, one more than Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire._

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J K Rowling’s fourth Harry Potter book, was released on 8th July, 2000 and was the fastest selling book in history on the first weekend of its publication._ All four Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as well as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, have been Number 1 bestsellers and are currently on bestseller lists in Britain, the USA, and around the world.

Bloomsbury will be publishing their standard children's hardback edition (ISBN 07475 51 006) and in addition an adult hardback edition (ISBN 07475 69 401, the same text but with a different jacket) at the same time, both editions to be 768 pages long and priced at £16.99.

All time zones preceding the UK are embargoed until 00:01 am BST (British Summer Time) on Saturday 21 June 2003.

HUZZAH!!!!!!!

Praise Iluvatar!

June 21st?!??!?!

Not only is that the day after my birthday, that's the day I get to go see Phantom of the Opera in Dayton! 6 hour round trip... that should get OotP read if I go buy the book at midnight that morning.

:swoon:

Please sit down._ I am going to tell you everything.
DUDE. All of our questions (well, not all of them)... answered. The Potter history... the OotP history.. possibly--Snape's--history.

Lol! you'll not get it till its the 22nd your time! The UK has to get it first according to the release, and because it'll be the 21st in America before it is in the UK, it'll be anything up to 24 hours of a gap :D

Colli
01-15-2003, 11:27 AM
Did I misread the article?

Shoot.

And I was getting excited because "PotO" are the letters "OotP" scrambled. It's a SIGN.

(edit) No...... the UK is on later time than we are. So if it's release at midnight for everyone, the UK will get it about 6-7 hours earlier than us (drat ;))... but it'll still be the 21st.

Anyway, I just checked Scholastic, they haven't said anything.

(edit 2) GoF is 734 pages.. which makes OotP about.. Colli grabs a calculator 979 pages... *faints*

Colli - WONDERFUL news! Almost makes having the Stomach Flu yesterday worth it!

Now I'm trying to decide which is faster, to wait until it's out here in the States, or to pre-order through amazon.uk and pay the shipping from there.

Decisions, Decisions. So excited. Wish they had more quotes. Drives me nuts w/ just those little ideas.....:p

I'm so excited tho. I should be back to work and have the time during the day to read during lunch, etc, by then!

*happy, happy, happy dance*

I told my mom... and I'm pretty sure she now thinks that I am out of my mind. You should've seen the look she gave me when I started giggling madly and shrieking and running around the house..

Dude... Dumbledore's gonna tell Harry EVERYTHING. All those questions we have? DUDE. I mean, I know we're just gonna get more questions... but having things answered that we've wondered about since... well, forever.. is great.

This year is gonna be the best year ever.

Smaller print?

Or simply shorter words?

:p

ValaSarah
01-15-2003, 02:21 PM
Elfea - there's something wrong w/ that calculation as well. They state that there are over 255,000 words compared to GOF's 191,000 words - but according to the actual page listing of 962 pages, that doesn't make sense - 69,000 words + in less than 30 pages. I think there's something Odd.

I think looking at a book around 900 pages, give or take 50 or so, is about right to what it'll actually be, unless they plan on cutting the font size down dramatially.

Or you can look at it this way:

GOF - 191K words/734 pages = 260.22 (averaged slightly up) Words per Page.

So, OOtP - 255K(minimum)/x = 260.22
260.22 * x = 255K
255K/260.22 = 979.94, or roughly 980 pages, minimum.

Can't wait to read it. And that first sentence of the book...oh, I wish it were a paragraph!

~Vala

Elfëa
01-15-2003, 02:23 PM
Lets hope for shorter words :p

no... I mean smaller print! (Did I really type that first line! :jawdrop: I'm shocked!)

edit: Nice calculation Vala -

hmm...

255/768 pages= 333 words per page...

slightly smaller print eh? Or bigger book??? :D :D

ValaSarah
01-15-2003, 02:42 PM
Elfea - it would have to be a font size of 6 or 8 at largest to fit 333 words on a page.

*le sigh*

155 Days until OOtP comes out!! (unless I counted wrong....easy to do, w/ my pregnancy brain).

~Vala

Elfëa
01-15-2003, 02:53 PM
Played with Word - 333 words fit half of A5 with font size 9... :)
To A4 with 14...

So, I guess they're making a bigger book in page size? :D

Well, my mom told me that she heard on the radio ages ago that it was supposed to be almost 1000 pages, so smaller print. :D

Time to start fantasizing about all the pages Snape is gonna get.

Well, I guess every possible option has been written... ;)

"In an exclusive interview, the people who will publish the fifth Potter book in the UK - Bloomsbury - told us security surrounding the manuscript was very tight.

It is also still being edited by Emma Matthewson, who worked on the first four books in the series. Emma is one of the only two people lucky enough to have the read the story so far. The other is Bloomsbury chief executive Nigel Newton. They share an office in Soho Square, west London.

The artwork for the book's cover is also being worked on. Then the design will be revealed on Bloomsbury's website.

At 768 pages, the new book will be much longer than The Goblet of Fire, which Bloomsbury say is "fantastic". "
~~~~
Keep in mind that they are referring to the UK edition. The American version will be longer because the font is different. Doing the math from the press release, the American version of book 5 should be around 925 pages.
I really need to start reading articles closer :D
(edit) Wasn't there a time when we thought that we'd NEVER get book 5??
Elfëa
01-15-2003, 03:17 PM
wonders how long is the GoF UK version..
When I first read the thread that it was "official" I thought my chain was being pulled again... but it's for real!! I just finished "The Goblet of Fire" yesterday and am already going nuts! I so cannot wait for this book to come out. I'm sure I have most of the same questions you all have in your heads... what is Dumbledore going to tell Harry?! Will Lupin be back (I really liked him)?? How much page time is Sirius gonna get (my third fav character after Hermione and Harry)??? So... mark your calendars mi amigos! HAHAHA:notworthy :notworthy :notworthy I am so not worthy of JKR
Colli
:D For your excitement and pleasure, "Stuff JKR has told us about book 5" (thanks to www.mugglenet.com):
In book five, we go into a whole new area, physically, an area you've never seen before, a magical world
Book five will be scary. Harry finds out a lot of things he hasn't stumbled across so far.
In book five (Harry) has to examine exactly what death means, in even closer ways.
We will see Mr. Weasley's car, Aragog, Dobby and the Dementors again.
The Dursleys are in the next book, and there's stuff coming with them that people might not expect.
During an interview, when JKR was asked in which Hogwarts room she'd like to be for 1 hour, she said it would be a room in which Harry has been before, but doesn't know its importance. Yet.
It's very important in the plot that Harry has his mother's eyes, and that her wand was very good for charms.
During an interview for Kids BBC, Victor Greensteet (reporter) asked Rowling if Harry would have a dragon for a pet. This is what she replied: "You can't tame a dragon, no matter what Hagrid thinks. It's simply impossible. So no. He has more common sense. He MAY have a different pet in the future, but for now, I won't say anything else".
In the same interview for Kids BBC, the reporter asked J. K. if Harry had ever used the internet, and this is what she had to say: "No. They (the Dursleys) won't let him go near Dudley's computer, and Dudley is the only one who has a computer. They hit him if he gets too near to the keyboard. So the answer would be No. I use it a lot, but Harry doesn't. Wizards don't really need to go on the web. They have an even better way to find out what's happening in the outside world, which I think is a lot more fun than the Internet, but I'm going to keep quiet on this one."
The choice between what's right and what's easy will be a pillar of the plot in Harry's last 3 years.
The "Arabella Figg" Dumbledore refers to at the end of book four is indeed the same Mrs. Figg that takes care of Harry for the Dursleys in book one.
There will be a new sorting hat song.
You'll be seeing Mrs. (Arabella) Figg in book five, and you'll find out all about her.
Harry's parents' profession will be a big part of the plot.
Harry will see the real 'Mad-Eye' Moody in book five.
We will find out why Voldemort killed Lily and James Potter.
Something HUGE will be revealed about Lily Potter.
There will be a female Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher
We'll see Lupin in Book Five. Yes, we will see a lot of old characters in Book Five.
Ginny Weasley will play more of a role in book five.
One of the main characters, one of Harry's "fans" will die (not Ron or Hermione though). The death will be "horrible to write."
:jawdrop: We've been doing algebra and evilness in maths today...
Can you do my homework for me ;)
Simplify
34x + 432 = 2h
23x + 677 - (23+2) = 2h
Anyway!....
RAH! 21ST JUNE!
argh...
I know I can do that, but it's just that I can't remember how to do it...
derivaatta, derivaatta... besides... I've learned maths in Finnish :p
edit: Fleur:
34x + 432 = 2h
23x + 677 - (23+2) = 2h
are they are pair? or just two different ones?
anyway
34x + 432 = 23x + 677 - (23+2)
34x -23x = 677 - 25 - 432
11x = 220
x= 20
edit:
Oh... the h... I forgot it
34*20 + 432 = 2h
2h = 1112
h= 556
Well, must say I'm reading Old English as translations - Beowulf and such, but Middle English is quitle understandable (Chaucer for example...). Will do Old English next year possibly.. :) (A JRRT subject btw :p)
Art?
I wasn't ever good at it, so I stuck with languages (English, Finnish, Swedish, French and Latin) and maths, history and such... I've done loads of subjects because our education system is different, we have to do those subjects...
Oh, but I swoon over history and mythology especially :p And English language... it's just too much fun.
And now I can get my hands on all nice literary theories :p (Weird thoughts about the author and the reader... who creates the text and such... :rolleyes: )
Please sit down. I am going to tell you everything.’”
OK, if Book 5 holds to the pattern and chronicles the events of Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts, the above quote would be from the end of fifth year, if not earlier.
But, Harry's first long conversation with Dumbledore - the one in which Dumbledore refused to tell Harry why Voldemort wanted to kill him in the first place - occurred at the end of Harry's first year at Hogwarts, not five :confused: but four years maximum before any of the events in the upcoming book if my initial assumption is correct.
In which case, X=FLINT, the first error found in the new book, months before its release even! :eek: (Unless JKR and her editors and publishers see this and correct the error, if that's what it is, before final publication.)
Oh, and here's something for ya'll from CNN.
CNN) -- Mark your calendars: Saturday, June 21, 2003.
That's the day "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," the long-awaited fifth volume in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, will be released, its publishers announced Wednesday.
"[Rowling] has written a brilliant and utterly compelling new adventure," said Bloomsbury Chief Executive Nigel Newton and Scholastic President Barbara Marcus in a joint statement.
The new book begins with the words:
The hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and a drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive ... The only person left outside was a teenage boy who was lying flat on his back in a flowerbed outside No. 4.
Later in the novel, the statement said, Rowling writes:
Dumbledore lowered his hands and surveyed Harry through his half-moon glasses.
"It is time," he said, "for me to tell you what I should have told you five years ago, Harry. Please sit down. I am going to tell you everything."
An even longer work
The new book is 38 chapters and 255,000 words, more than one-third longer than the fourth book, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," the publishers said in a press release.
Given that "Goblet" clocked in at 752 pages in its American edition, this means that Book 5 is approaching James Michener -- or Dickens -- lengths. (The publishers apparently will reduce the size of the type; the new book is going to be 768 pages, they say. At least it will be in Britain, where "Goblet of Fire" ran 636 pages.) Michener's "Hawaii," for example, was a brain-fogging, wrist-breaking 500,000 words.
However, eager readers who gobbled up "Goblet" will probably be unfazed by another 60,000 words -- indeed, it's probably a bonus.
The first three Harry Potter books were released in the United States in 1998 and 1999. By the debut of the fourth book, "Goblet of Fire," at 12:01 a.m. on July 8, 2000, interest had risen to such levels that bookstores around the world were offering midnight parties to welcome customers. The Barnes & Noble in Minnesota's Mall of America transformed a section into "Potter Town" and other stores booked magicians and sponsored slumber parties.
The combined first printing in North America and the United Kingdom exceeded 4.5 million copies -- still a publishing record.
When a few copies of the book leaked in advance, its purchasers were besieged by media like the holders of golden tickets in the movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."
Phenomenon
Potter has become a phenomenon perhaps unparalleled in the publishing industry -- and the entertainment business as a whole.
The four books have sold 80 million hardback and paperback copies in the United States alone. Worldwide, sales approach 200 million.
The first two books, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" ("Sorcerer's Stone" in the United States) and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," have been made into top-grossing movies by Warner Bros., a division of AOL Time Warner (owners of CNN.com).
The first movie grossed almost $1 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing movie of all time after "Titanic." The second film, still in theaters, has made $772 million thus far.
Then there's Potter merchandise, which has brought in an additional $1 billion.
And all four books are still on the bestseller lists. They have all gone to No. 1, too. Many credit the books with sparking a resurgence in children's literature, leading to the popularity of the Lemony Snicket works, among others.
The Potter books have also been so popular they prompted The New York Times to establish a separate list for children's books, lest Rowling's works hog the top spots on its mainstream rankings.
Online retailers have been taking orders for the new book for months.
The book will be published in the United States by Scholastic and in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia by Bloomsbury. Both publishers have handled all previous Potter books.
And diehard fans don't have to worry that this is the last of the literary juggernaut of a series -- Rowling has said she will write two more Potter books.
It won't turn out to be fake. :) This is *official.*
Every other time, the supposed release date was based on assumptions, guesses, hopes or rumors. Occasionally we'd have the publishers publicly saying something like "We hope to publish the book this year." And Scholastic told investors (who were upset over the lack of a book in 2001) that HP 5 should come out in 2002 (and of course it didn't).
This is the first and only time there has been an unequivocal statement: HP 5 will be released on a specific date.
Goblet of Fire was delivered on the morning it was released.
My dad was working at Amazon.co.uk at the time and they had a restricted number of staff who were assigned to package them up before hand. Each member of staff had to sign a contract to say that they wouldn't reveal anything about the content to anyone as they started packing them during the week before release.
Since it will take some time to arrive in Spain, and I don't want the Spanish version, which will be released later anyway....
this amazon thing sounds great to me, even if it takes a few days to reach me. I'll just have to avoid the boards until I get hold of it.
The question is: will I be able to restrain myself and avoid getting the book completely spoiled? :eek:
Colli
01-16-2003, 02:46 PM
Ugh.. it's going to be terrible trying not to spoil everyone... we'll most definitely have to start an Official OotP discussion thread (spoilers). :D
And then the obvious separate thread for Snape.
Me too. :D That's what I did with GoF. I preordered it and showed up at the bookstore to pick it up at midnight. It was great! :)
I'll just have to avoid the boards until I get hold of it.
No you won't. That's why we have the super-nifty spoiler coding. And everybody had better be prepared to use it.
Make sure you put any spoilers in the spoiler coding. Like this.
Colli
01-16-2003, 02:56 PM
:eek: Even if the thread is marked "spoilers"? Now, spoiler coding in the Leaky Cauldron or a general Lit Disc thread is understandable.. but threads are gonna get really ugly if we're trying to discuss book 5 and have to put everything in coding.
I don't even remember GoF coming out.. I wasn't a fan yet. :D I'm SOOOO excited though... www.mugglenet.com is preparing line parties... and while I'm not the "camp out with 10 year olds" type, ooh it's just excitement.
Bookstores in malls will be open at midnight, won't they?
amrael
01-16-2003, 03:03 PM
I take it that as long as the thread has the word spoilers in the title, it ahould be OK. We didn't spoil code the reviews for TTT in the Movie Disc forum. Just made clear that the thread was anything but spoiler free.
And no spoilers in the thread titles!!!!!
Thanks from all of us who won't be able to get it the 21st (nor the 22nd.... maybe july? :(
Good news, good news! :clap:
The quotes in the press release are such a TEASER! :eek:
And a third longer! :D With at least a third more Snape than usual, please! :o
Amrael, it says it will only be out in the UK and US, probably meaning that non-English speaking countries will have to wait longer for their own version. It was like that with GoF over here, but I remember they had the English books on sale almost the day it came out internationally. The bookshops knew there were a lot of older kids and adults who didn´t want to wait four more weeks for the translation. You should be able to get the English one soon enough. :)
OK amrael, make that "sooner than you dared to hope but still of course not soon enough". :D
Sorry guys, I haven´t reall been keeping up with this forum... is the muggleinformer ever going to come back or are we staying here now? If we are, I´ll need a Snape thread by the evening of June 21st at the latest... Apologies for being off topic!
Hi Pip!
I think that if I lived in either Madrid or Barcelona I wouldn't have much trouble getting one, if not the first day, surely after the first weekend. But where I live there are almost no bookshops that have books in English at all (same with those non-dubbed films I always seem to be complaining about)
So I'll pre order it from amazon, and save the trouble. Then, if I can buy one before it reaches me, I'll find somebody else interested as well.
And don't you worry, Pippin. Snape is never off-topic in these forums. :D
FYI, Reba has a thread here (http://www.council-of-elrond.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2320) that explains the situation.
01-16-2003, 03:42 PM
Hi Amrael! :)
Maybe the British kids who come to your beautiful part of the world for their holidays will want to buy it, too, so the shops have it. :)
Anyway yes, I can´t count on getting it the same day it comes out, either (or having the time to read it) - hang on, what day of the week is it? German GoF came out on a Saturday so kids wouldn´t skip school and stay at home reading :D - so I feel your pain. Staying away from the net will be the only solution!
Thanks for the link.
:beer: to OotP, and much more Snape! :D
Good point. I don't think everything should be in coding. IMO, the big revelations should be in coding, at least at first. So that people don't accidentally read the name of the person(s) who died. Maybe use coding for: "I cried when Cedric died." But you wouldn't have to use it for: "I laughed when Malfoy got turned into a ferret." (But there's plenty of time to discuss this before it becomes an issue.)
Only four weeks for translation? In Finland they had said it'll take about 5 months to get the book released! :eek:
Can you believe it? I'm certainly going to get English version... (as if I wouldn't anyway :D)
:D And I understand your points about staying out of the forums until you get it.. when TTT came out, I couldn't see it until Thursday night and pretty much avoided the forums Tuesday (for the New Zealanders), Wednesday, and Thursday until I got to see it. Even in spoiler coding, the temptation is still there... and there's always the occasional, unintentional screw-up.
Plus everyone's so excited and you can't do anything about it! :D
Snape? Off-topic? Never. :D
lol colli,
I've got all my editions last december... I've got two Finnish translations (PS and CoS) and all the four in paperback UK versions (PS as adult, rest as child, and CoS might be hardcover, can't remember). It was rather difficult to come by to them in my hometown... where there's only one bookshop - some shops do have booksection tho...
When I got the book, I'd read it all the day until the night and when I'd finish it. :) I think I finished GoF at 3 am...
My GoF is a first American edition. My PoA is a first paperback print (American as well) and the other two are unknown British paperbacks. I actually began reading the series after the GoF madness, when a friend of mine insisted and bought me PSS.
The problem about these first editions being worth something is that there are hundreds of thousands. Now, a real first printing of the first British edition of TPS, would be another thing... a good number of years from now on. ;)
First-edition Philosopher's Stone are worth a lot because they're so rare. Other than that... don't plan on selling your book(s) and using the money to pay for college. CoS and PoA aren't worth anything special. They printed so many copies of GoF that first editions aren't worth any more than what you paid for them. The same will definitely be true of OoTP.
Elfëa
01-16-2003, 07:05 PM
YES! :D I just pre-ordered my copy on Amazon.co.uk :D
I so understand all those who can't find an English copy as soon as it comes out... There are a few English bookshops here but they're all in the city centre (so I'd have to find time to go there) and I'm not sure they'd have copies for the first few days. And consider than it usually takes them ages to find a book they don't have and prices are higher. I've already bougth lots of books with amazon and they've always been delivered within a couple of days (sometimes even earlier than I expected) with a decent price even considering shipping costs (that is, cheaper than the bookshop especially if you buy a few books together). Differece has never been enormous but if you add the time you have to waste + parking prices... buying online it's cheaper. And I have a nice 50% on this book too :D
But, trust me, if it's not here by the 24th I'll sue them all ;)
Pippin
01-17-2003, 07:56 AM
Elfea, Sirius - on translations:
4 weeks was probably an optimistic guess. They (translators and publishers) wouldn´t have to wait for the UK release date to get their hands on the manuscript (or rather typescript). It would be possible to start working on a translation NOW, since JKR has finished the typescript. Or they could at least start after the editing is finished, which would be waaaaay before June 21. It´s the same silly problem with most foreign movies: It usually takes ages for them to arrive here (in hideous dubbed versions :rolleyes: ) and then they claim the translation took so long. :mad: I mean, if it´s possible to release the REALLY BIG movies, like LOTR and Star Wars, on the same day as internationally, why shouldn´t it be possible to release new HP books on the same day? It´s unfair for all the younger kinds who can´t read English yet!
If I remember correctly, the internet translation project was pretty soon squashed by the publishers, and rightly so, since it´s a blatant copyright violation. :( I think they´ve reduced the project to spotting translation mistakes and suggesting better alternatives, very nice and law-abiding. :D
Elfëa
01-17-2003, 09:57 AM
I can't remember where I read it, perhaps from my "local paper" I read over internet, but the five moths is rather definate. :( So those who wait for the translation... I do pity them... But I think they can get English version straight on 21st :)
I was rereading Sorceror's Stone this morning...
"Well... Voldemort said that he only killed my mother because she tried to stop him from killing me. But why would he want to kill me in the first place?"
Dumbledore sighed very deeply this time.
"Alas, the first thing you ask me, I cannot tell you. Not today. Not now. You will know, one day... put it from your mind for now, Harry. When you are older... I know you hate to hear this... when you are ready, you will know."
Hey, glae - WHAT are you doing in Nairobi? Staying longer? How cool! Tell me all about it! *me=nosy git* :p
Pippin, they actually got the permission to carry on with GoF, as a 'private' project, meaning, only people who contributed to the translation could access the texts. That's how it's probably going to go ahead with OotP.
I think it's a great thing - just people working closely with the text. I don't personally see a copyright issue, if it's not used to make money or make the publisher loose any. I mean - who would honestly read a whole book on screen or - print it out, to save 20 quid??
Ahh yes, the 'Gurken'... that was fun.
Hi everyone. :cool:
So, if I'm in Australia, and our release date is the same as everyone else's, does that really mean we get it hours ahead of everyone else? :eek: :D
Sounds like they probably wouldn't want that to happen - maybe we just won't have midnight releases, that would mean we'd get it the next morning at around the same time as the UK midnight releases, I think.
I don't really care - we're getting it! And on the first day! Last time (which seems like a very long time ago) Australia had to wait a week before it came here. And it was a Friday release, so I didn't get it until the afternoon.
I find it utterly delightful that she would put this quote in the very first book and not use it again until the fifth. I always thought if Harry hadn't found out that particular secret by now, it wouldn't be revealed until book VII. Never mind. :D
Elfëa
Midnight GMT? I think I'm 11 hours ahead of GMT here in Sydney. Surely the bookstores aren't going to be able to stop people from storming in and insisting on buying the book before 11am on the 21st?
Mylla
01-20-2003, 05:44 PM
I remember that day. Our local bookshop opened at 6am, and people turned up in costume. :D
I wasn't there - I have a phobia about looking like an obsessed fan (I'm working on this phobia, it's a strange one to have since I am an obsessed fan :p). I went to the same bookshop to pick up my pre-booked copy when I got home from uni at 4:30pm.
Then I sat down and read it, reading through dinner, stopping for about an hour to have a shower and do some cooking for the next day, and finishing the book at 11:30pm. (I knew perfectly well I wouldn't be able to sleep if I hadn't finished it!)
Elfëa
01-20-2003, 06:01 PM
Are you saying that 11.30pm is late??? When I read GoF I think spend the night reading it... Started around 9pm and finished of sometime in the middle of the night...
but then again, I have this awful tendecy to stay awake ALL night reading... And I can read several books one night... :o At least I could... I've grown older since... :o
But then again, it was only last night I stayed up reading till 3am... ON INTERNET :( (And that means I have to walk from the comp room back to my room... about 15 mins walk in the dark, empty streets... (okay, there are streetlights :p))
Elfëa
01-20-2003, 06:30 PM
That would mean I'll get the book around 8am... or later :eek:
Mylla
01-20-2003, 06:36 PM
Are you saying that 11.30pm is late??? It must have been back then. (Back in 2000 when I was a youngster of 18... :rolleyes: ) I only started staying up late the next year, I think. But the point was rather the intense all-afternoon-and-evening reading schedule, and finishing in 6 hours (if you don't count the break). :D
This "local" bookstore is 5-10 minutes by car, you know Smeagol.
Elfëa
01-20-2003, 06:41 PM
Hmm... I can't remember how long it took me to read GoF - but I was first reading it in Finnish... so I think 6 hours I quite right :)
I remember getting it and PoA from library tho... I had to wait for ages for them... :( But I couldn't go stables or anywhere before I had read at least PoA... :)
Ash, Ican't remember anymore... hmm... I think I spoke about the English version earlier :)
Yeah, it was a D&D night for us and I left the game early, around 11:30, to go get in line at the bookstore. Based on how many people were ahead of me in line, I might go get in line around 10:30 this time, though I expect I'll still have to park at the car dealer down the street - no cookshop around here has a parking lot nearly big enough to cope with Midnight New-HP-Book Madness. :) Even though I had to wait an hour and a half - the first half hour outside until the bookshop opened its doors - and none of my gaming buddies went with me, it was still grand fun being there in my cloak among hundreds of other HP enthusiasts... I thought about taking the easy way out and pre-ordering from Amazon after finding that even my HP-enjoying gaming buddies still aren't crazy enough to go to the bookstore with me, but I had a good time last time, and I expect I'll enjoy the midnight-at-the-bookstore experience again. (Even more so if the bookstore has its new cafe open for midnight munchies. :))
I doubt there will be midnight openings in many cities in Finland, perhaps in two or three- the capital and couple others. :)
My sister in law is getting married on the 21st :eek: :eek: So I'd been figuring that the earliest I could get HP5 would be that Sunday the 22nd ....
But stopped at the local bookstore, and they're taking pre-orders. 20% discount if I paid right then .... it's more than the costs I've seen some post, but Amazon takes so long to arrive in the boonies where I live, that this is more than worth it.
The book will be ready and waiting for me at midnight on the 21st (that is, one minute past the 20th that Friday night). So I'm thinking I'll have time for a nap after the Rehearsal Dinner, then can stay up all night reading the book before I have to rush 'round all day helping with wedding prep.
I'm afraid I'll end up having to hide the book from myself and wait 'til I get home from the Reception to start reading it ... and we'll have family and friends staying with us so I can't be antisocial!! :( Oh, the agony!!
On the up side, three months ago we were all just sitting 'round wondering when #5 would *ever* come out. I'll deal with a few inconveniences if it means we get the book, finally!! :cool: :D
A month and a half or so left to wait - and isn't this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3002665.stm) interesting? Smells a bit of publicity stunt to me, given the extreme security generally reputed to be used around Rowling's unpublished work :confused: I wouldn't have minded being the one to make the lucky find, though - I can wait another 1.5 months but sadly it appears spouse's grandma, who has also read and enjoyed the books so far, will not live to see the official release of OotP. :(
Im sorry to hear about that Moxie :(
Theres publicity instances everywhere here too. I do recall a women...in Pennsylvania i beleive...has taken claim that J.K.Rowling stole her book idea for Henry Potter...or something along those lines. it was a few years ago, back when the whole Harry is a devil worshiper was big in the papers. She had these fake dolls and everything. And AMAZINGLY enough all of the characters were the same only spelled with another letter. Very cheesy if you ask me, I was furious. But the fact that before the HP books were published J.K apparently had some monetary issues, she couldn't have afforded to fly all the way over here to steal someone else's idea. Big spot light hog if you ask me.
And this smells like a publicity stunt to me too...
Add to that that they were found in the garbage. If you stole a copy of HP, would you really throw it in the garbage? And if you were someone jogging along, would you pay enough attention to garbage to notice not only that there were books in it but Harry Potter books? Strange deal. I heard they are prosecuting a couple of the employees.
They've thrown suspicious looks in the direction of the guy who found them for just that reason... you're running along, just HAPPEN to find copies of the new Harry Potter book in the garbage and then try to sell it to a newspaper... it does sound a bit sus
:) I posted this in the Fan Gathering June 21st page too:
MuggleNet (www.mugglenet.com) OotP Release Party in London!
After much discussion with interested HP cast members and fans, we are making final plans to meet in a large bookstore in London to host a midnight party celebrating the release of the fifth book, Order of the Phoenix.
We've got work ahead with finalizing and coordinating the bookstore/nearby hotel accommodations/physical plan for the event. We are in contact with various interested HP cast members, and as we get closer to the date, we'll know more of their schedules and post that info.
We need to know how many people are interested in coming. No more guessing on my part -- I need a show of hands so we can better guess the size of the crowd involved for the benefit of the bookstore/hotel/party needs.
Leave a comment below if you are interested in attending, and how many people you would be bringing with. We'd also like to know if you'd consider staying in a nearby hotel after the party (it is a midnight release). We're working on getting group rates right now, but we need to give them a number.
They are talking cast members. :p You all are so lucky.
NEW YORK, June 5 — Think you've seen a lot of hype about ''Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix''? Just wait until the book comes out.
Billboards. Baseball parks. A countdown in Times Square. Scholastic, Inc., the U.S. publisher of J.K. Rowling's mega-selling children's series, has planned a $3 million-$4 million marketing campaign, more than doubling its budget for the release of the last Potter book, ''Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,'' in 2000.
''I can't think of anything that compares to the budget for the new Harry Potter book, except for the budget for the last Potter story,'' says Laurie Brown, a vice president for sales at Harcourt Trade Publishers who over the past 20 years has also worked for Random House and Farrar, Straus & Giroux.
Timed to the midnight June 21 release of ''Order of the Phoenix,'' the show gets rolling on what could be called ''Harry Potter Eve,'' Friday night June 20, with a countdown in Times Square. A billboard on Sunset Strip will announce the news in Los Angeles.
''You can never take anything for granted,'' says Michael Jacobs, a senior vice president at Scholastic. ''There's a lot of noise in the world and you have to do everything you can to get attention, especially after a three-year wait.''
Starting in July, billboard ads will appear in Atlanta, Chicago and several other cities. Scholastic will also take its campaign to baseball parks. The publisher has reached agreements with the Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles and other teams for ''Harry Potter'' days, featuring costume contests and scoreboard promotions.
''Reaching out to kids is very important to us because they're our future season ticket holders and our future fans,'' says Marco Gentile, the Orioles' corporate promotions manager.
The publisher already has distributed 3 million bumper stickers, 400,000 buttons, 50,000 window displays and 24,000 stand-up posters with countdown clocks. Last weekend, logos could be found on badges throughout the Los Angeles Convention Center, where BookExpo America, the publishing industry's annual gathering, was held.
Scholastic has also sent more than 15,000 ''event kits'' to bookstores and other retail outlets, where parties are planned all over the country. The kits include stickers, buttons, a trivia quiz and suggestions for how to handle long lines of impatient fans:
''You can start a game of what Muggles call 'Telephone.' Start the message with Dumbledore's line from 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix': 'It is time for me to tell you what I should have told you five years ago, Harry.' Then people whisper the message from person to person. Let the person at the end of the line shout out what he thinks he heard.''
Rowling's four previous Potter novels have worldwide sales of more than 190 million and Scholastic has commissioned a record 8.5 million first printing for ''Order of the Phoenix.'' Within hours of the announcement in January that ''Order of the Phoenix'' was coming out, the book topped best seller lists at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com and has remained steady for months.
WHY? A $3 million-$4 million ad campaign? Why? :rolleyes:
First of all, it's a pretty lousy ad campaign that doesn't reach people. I haven't seen a thing. Second of all, why do they think they need it? "You can never take anything for granted" they say. Gimme a break! Pre-orders are already -- what? -- like, double what they were for GoF.
It's just funny. Almost like a movie premiere! (isn't that about what they do spend on movie promos?) I guess librarians of America should be happy, since HP is what's getting kids to 'read' again (like they ever quit?)
It does seem kinda unnecessary though. There's already such a huge fan base for it. Kinda like LOTR, there was no press yet every fan just knew it was coming...
And I'm kinda planning to go to Waterstones Picadilly (which isn't even in Picadilly!!) to this book part with the cast alledgedly...
What to do?! Go to the party with friends, or get my book!? AARRRGH!!
Has anyone noticed other people re-reading the books of buses, in parks, on the tube, etc ;) ? I have... Everywher eI go, I've been seeing old scruffy copies of varing HP books.
Go to the party with your friends. Or, if you can get them interested, throw your own HP party! It's like the Fourth of July. Yeah, big fireworks are fun, but it's even more fun to have a BBQ with your family and set small ones off in the driveway.
But I guess you don't have the 4th there. Um, substitute any British holiday that has fireworks. New Year's, maybe. (I don't know much about British holidays, is there one with fireworks, or any sort of independence day?)
Friday's usually my gaming night, and my buddies are OK with me leaving early to head for Barnes & Noble (probably not the same one as Chiana though :() ...in fact at least two of them will be expecting the book delivered next day :) so they understand. Since your party's a sleepover, Fleurd, why not bring it on back to the party for your friends to ooh and ah over (assuming they're HP-appreciative as well)? Just make sure no one spills soda or cookie crumbs all over your brand new book :eek: and a good time can be had by all! :D
P.S. lithorose: Fleurd or others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Brits enjoy fireworks on Guy Fawkes Day (resemblance to a certain phoenix's name likely quite intentional on JKR's part).
P.P.S. Chiana, Fleurd, and others: Shall we post our Book 5 opening party experiences here or start a new thread?
ChianaWeasley
Yes, absolutely Moxie! A new thread for our party would be brilliant!!!
Fleur, go to the party and then leave to get your copy, and then come back to the party. Party on till your juice has run dry. Then go home and fall asleep reading OoTP! Ah, the best way to fall asleep late at night...well the only one I can think of anyway :D
A large group of my amigos are going now, the group keeps growing. The HP fanatics are starting to submerge, isn't it lovely. Though I havent seen too many copies of HP books in school, mostly ppl in my english class.
I think a new thread would be lovely. It seems like ages that we've been with just a handful of variations on the waiting-for-the-book theme. But soon we will have so much more to discuss! (Like when GoF came out.) Oh, goody! :)
BTW -- I'll be out of town when I get my copy of the book. I have friends getting married on the 21st. (Imagine seeing a countdown to your wedding day every time you went into a bookshop!) So I won't get to do a whole lot of reading the day of. Fortunately, they're HP fans, too! So after the rehearsal dinner, we're going to a book store for the release at midnight. (What a way to spend the first minutes of your wedding day!) :D
This is the first time I'm not reading a spoiler, as it's not authorised! And its been pulled from AOL and other sites, just read it this sec on Muggle Net.
Thanks for the advice! And no, we dont have independance day, we've been under the Royals for thousands of years :rolleyes: :p Fireworks, I think are illegal when there isn't an actual event to celebrate, like the Jubille last year, New Years, Dwalli (sp?) etc. :)
Unfortunatly... No friend of mine is obsessed like me.... I've left my PS to my best friend, but I dont think she's even started it yet!
I think, on my way home from my friends house, I'll pick up OotP from the bookshop in Greenwich and read it on the bus... Well, I read FotR on the bus, took me four months but I read all of it on the bus!...
Then, I'll get home, hopefully it'll be warm, and I'll take over the sitting room, if anyone comes nearme, I'll sprey them with a water pistol... Yes...Mmm..... I'll make sure I wont fall asleep, by having five-minutely doses of coco-cola, spicy pringles and lots of chocolate. :D
I'd be inclined to agree with you, but it started as an audio clip. That seems like a lot of effort to be a hoax. Plus, I don't think the publishers would've issued a legal injunction against AOL and MuggleNet if it weren't real.
The clip isn't completely illegal--if you go to the-leaky-cauldron.org they have a connection to Amazon, which I guess is the only legal site.
It got me very excited for the book! Just 8 days, 2 hrs! [edit--9 days at the time--I can't count!]
Kristin
06-12-2003, 12:26 AM
True. Thanks for pointing that out, Athelas.
I guess the audio clip is sanctioned and is legally up on Amazon.com and back up at AOL. But transcriptions of the audio are banned. Doesn't make sense to me, but whatever. We'll abide by the rules. :)
So anyone who wants to hear the excerpt can find their way to a site that hosts it.
NEW YORK (AP) — Can’t wait to read the new Harry Potter book? You now have the chance to hear it.
Random House, U.S. distributor of the audio version of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” has released a 105-second excerpt currently available on Amazon.com and AOL.com.
“It’s just a promotional trailer to remind fans it’s coming out,” Amanda D’Acierno, publicity director for the Random House Audio Publishing Group, said Thursday.
I know this sounds odd, but I liked it better when there was less hype for book four. EVERYONE is going to be buying their copy on midnight, for book four there wasn't a huge crowd there. and I like that, i think it follows the feeling of having the book all to myself. I tend to be like this, when one of my favorite bands is discovered and everyone begins to love them. The typical I found out about them first!
LOL, I'm very spoiled I guess. But I'm sure everyone wants Harry all to themselves to read.
I still haven't read your posts, but I will!
I know what you mean ChianaWeasley. This will be the first HP book that I've awaited before its release. I read the others after they were released, so sniff at me and roll your eyes. ;):)
But really, this should be very cool. Honestly, I won't buy the book. I can wait 'til whenever I can get a hold of it from somebody else or at the library (goodness knows there'll be a 20 year waiting list for that). Well, I might buy it at a 2nd hand shop for a few bucks if possible. I'm cheap. ... maybe my sister will buy it. :o
...oh, and I've heard almost nothing about the book.
edit (6/15/03)...
Read through all the posts now (except spoilers). Thoughts: Great news on the 700+ pages or whatever it is.
I'm sure JKR is extremely well off (to put it mildly), but after this she's gonna be a gazillionaire! Wow.
It's exciting but kind of scary. What if it isn't that good? What if it's really disappointing (like the movies have been to me)? I'm trying not to get too excited. Should be pretty cool, though.
What's the point of putting it online? I mean, it'd take like 5 days just to type it up. I guess they'd put just the juicy parts up. It's sort of like opening up your Christmas presents early; it just isn't as much fun as you thought it'd be. I do feel sorry for the people receiving the emails though.
I saw somewhere that some bookstores (B. Dalton was mentioned) allow their employees early access. If I was smart I'd have got a job at a bookstore.:D And this is completely unrelated, but I didn't know B. Dalton was still around. They closed all their stores in our area.
That wouldn't happen to be an A&R's would it Amberion? Cos I saw that too, and I like how they've got this tiny thing in the corner of the "so you think you know Harry Potter" that says "not endorsed by or affiliated with JKR in any way" :rolleyes:
And apparently the movie site Ain't it cool news had a review up early today, but because it DIDN'T have spoilers people complained, so the review was rewritten to include spoilers (and even the page number of the death, but I'm not sure if it actually said who died) and JKR herself requested that it be taken down :eek: I don't think I'll be picking up a copy on Saturday (no pre-order, and I don't want to be around a bunch of screaming 10 year olds...) but I think I'll die in the mean-time
I finally got round to calling the bookshop, and I don't need to reserve, they'll have 2,000 copies of it! Well, it's right by the Cutty Sark, I guess they have to feed the tourists! :p
I read somewhere that not even reviewers are getting a copy of Ootp! So those reviewers Pilgrim must be pulling an attention seeking prank :rolleyes:
I think I'll spoiler code this, it's regarding what JKR said about the death, I just want to be sure!
She [JKR] said that killing the major character was like being a ruthless killer! I'm scared of my arse that she's mislead us into thinking it's not Ron or Hermione...
The interview that was taken from will be shown tomorrow (for all you Brits) on BB2 at 7.30pm. I'll try and type a transcript up, its noly 30 mins long! meanies!
Hello everyone, its been almost half a week since I've posted. Im on vacation, and I couldn't wait to post again. So I found a library that had internet access.
Anyway, I saw a different ad in one of the bookstores around cape may. And it had harry on it of course, the typical american cover. but it also had moody,ron,and someone else. My parents rushed me out of the store, i didnt get a chance to investigate. But they're bringing Moody back in book five.
Im soo excited only three days!!!
Oh my Goodness, FleurD, you would not believe what I just read in the newspaper! (Seattle Times if your interested in which paper)
"Author JK Rowling admits she acted as a 'ruthless killer' when she wrote the death of one of the series' central characters of this fifth book... Rowling says that, after writing the death scene, 'I walked into the kitchen crying and Neil [her husband] said to me, "What on Earth is wrong?" And I said, "I've just killed the person." And he said, "Well don't do it then." And I said,
"Well, it just doesn't work like that." You are writing children's books, you have to be a ruthless killer." '
I'm sorry, but I remembered your wording in this thread and I read this article and those two words... OK, now I'm scared!
:( :eek: :confused:
I dont know whether to highlight or not... I'm just so scared of my darlings dying, I dont know what to do! I think I'll stay away from anything written in American papers because JKr is suing most of them for printing exerpts... I had ANOTHER Harry Potter dream last night... I've gone barmy!
My friend told me today:
that JKR said that either Ron or Hermione died
But I seriously doubt she said that... Maria was probaly just saying that to make me cry again...
Yes, I'll admit, I get teary when I read news on JKR saying things about OotP... Very hormonal this week... :o
Why do papers have to spoil it by printing hints or rumors?
Grr.... I dont blame her for suing people, that would make me angry if people spoiled things.I think I'm gonna sit in my house by my comp until I leave for Barnes & Noble, ;) so i cant hear any hints. My imp wants me to ruin it, but my will is strong!!! :cool:
FleurD, no worries:
One of the spoiler sites I read said that they weren't going to give away who died, but assured readers that Ron and Hermione would be back in Book 6. :)
Anyway, the NY Daily News is being sued (huzzah!), and they've taken down the spoilers they had posted yesterday (that I read :o).
Hello everyone. :) I haven't posted in the Muggle Informer before - but thought I might post now that Order of the Phoenix is just about here. I only just read the other 4 books over December/January, and hadn't paid any attention to the series in the past, so this is the first time I've paid any attention to a HP book release.
The worldwide hype for this book is pretty amazing! I think the simultaneous release around the world is a great idea - although it does leave the risk of certain newspapers giving out early spoilers... I saw on the news that one newspaper is being sued millions for an article they posted containing a few plot spoilers...
I always like reading fan's anticipation & initial impressions on something new like OotP, so these forums are pretty entertaining to read! :D
EDIT: According to my timezone, it's Colli's birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY COLLI! :D :)
And, Colli, happy birthday!! :hug: :hug:
Hey, remember last summer when we heard that it would be THIS summer before we got OotP? I never really thought these days would come... "I'll have graduated by then!" I said!
Man, I wish we hadn't lost all those posts. :(
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COLLI!
0 days and 15 hours!
My homepage is a local Cape Cod (very small for those not in New England) newspaper and they have a review with spoilers right there! I'm staying away from EVERYTHING right now!
I'm not getting mine till tomorrow anyway. That's about 22 hours from now, so count yourselves lucky. There's just no way I'm going out at midnight for it. Now, if I knew other Potterphiles in the area it might be a different story!:D
Better put this in the big letters so people see it:
*sigh* I'll have to wait until Monday to get the book since Summer Solstice is Saturday, and I have a ritual on Sunday, but you better bet your broomsticks that I'll be running out of work at 4:31 PM and running down to the book store to get it! (And they had better not be sold out!)
I don't mind spoilers (I'm kind of a spoiler junkie), but I'm glad no one's spoiled who's dying...I would have to get angry if they did that....
PS: Have a great birthday colli!
Now...off to finishing GoF...for the 6th time...;)
just thought some of you folks might want to know that the Target stores (here in the US) are selling the new Potter book for $16.86. the lowest price i've seen around is from Amazon.com at $17, so Target's got a really good deal (not sure how much Walmart is selling it for though, you folks may want to check). stocks are limited on that price though so you may want to stop by your nearest discount store a little early in the day. i just thought selling a book for $26 is a little too steep, i don't care how highly anticipated or popular it is.
Hey LadyEK! Thanks for the head's up... except we don't have a Target in the area. :( I'm heading to Walmart in 3 hours and am crossing my fingers they'll have a reasonable price. :D
Thanks for all the birthday wishes!!!! :hug:
The cheapest I've seen it...and I've getting it for...is free. Unfortunately I have to wait, because the place I'm getting it from doesn't open until tomorrow morning at 6:00 and only stays open til 11:00!! Who is setting their alarm EARLY tomorrow? Just came in here to blow off some pre-book release steam... does some cartwheels
My sister and I are waaaaaaay to hyped up about all of this. Today I was driving through McDonalds and the woman at the checkout window was just standing there while I was waiting for my chocolate milkshake.
Me: Errr....my milkshake?
Her: I'm getting it, okay?
Me: Oh, sorry.
My little sister: She wanted to avada kedavra you.
That and we were singing fifty cent, except saying "harry" instead of the cuss words.
We're weird, I know. But give us a break, we were hyper. ;)
We paid about $18 each for ours here; not too bad. The wait at the bookstore was I think about 90 min., similar to that for GoF - the line was larger but the bookstore has expanded since then too. I saw a fair number of people in cloaks (incl. myself) or wizard hats, and a few full costumes including a remarkable little Harry in full school uniform :D Got a few stickers and pairs of plastic Harry-glasses while in line, too. :) and despite the crummy early forecast I noted in the Filk! thread, we had a humid but warm and rain-free night for The Big Bookstore Line.
TBD, my group and at least one other in our area are getting together for Solstice on Sunday, and I'll bet one big (though unspoken) reason is that half of us are holed up with our preciousssesss ;) today.
ChianaWeasley
We paid $nineteen o' seven$ at barnes and noble for ours. Plus all of their Harry Potter or related merchandise was twenty percent off!
My friend got hers before me, and I warned her that if she read anything aloud or spoiled anything I would harm her. She read the inside of the cover !!:eek:!! I screeched at the top of my lungs, and acted as if I would spring on her she just laughed and thought it was hysterical.
When I got my copy I just sort of looked at it, held it, amazed that I finally had it. Creepy I know :rolleyes:
Didn't they tell us that the ppbk and the hardbound would be coming out at the same time? I got online today to see where I could buy it and wasn't happy to find out it was only in hardbound.:mad:
So I went shopping. Borders was cheapest at $17, but they were out till at least Monday. And I found a new bookstore downtown (not new, just never knew about it. Walked right by it too!), but they wanted the full$30! As much as I like HP, I don't want to pay THAT much for it!
Finally found a copy at the local university store. $22! I was pretty surprised because they are usually more expensive than everywhere else! Still not happy about the total amount as I usually buy used paperbacks and am not used to paying more than $5 for anything.:rolleyes: But I didn't want to wait months for a copy, either. By then all the big secrets would have leaked out.
Actually taped saran wrap around the cover to keep it nice. I feel like I have to take good care of a hardbound, which is why I actually prefer paperback. Oh, well. Given the amount of re-reading I've done with the other 4 it'll be worth it in the long run.
we got our copy a little after midnight at Borders for about $18 as well...cheaper than regular price (40% off!), which was suppose to be $29.95 or something (says the people who worked at Borders). and the lines weren't so bad either; those who reserved their copies got the books first, then whatever was leftover was up for grabs. luckily, the bookstore had more than enough copies for everyone (phew!)
