Since I just started a fairly negative thread (about plot holes), I decided to balance with this thread since I didn't see another one (mods, forgive me if I missed it).
What is your favorite scene in the books?
For me? Learning to fight the boggart. It's the first serious introduction to Lupin, who is my favorite character as well.

Almost any scene with Lupin really. I love that character a lot. But the one that really gets to me (I'm warning you, sappiness ahead) is in PoA (my favorite of the books thusfar) at the very end on the train ride home when Harry's reading Sirus's letter...it really gets to me. I really feel for Harry (probably due to my own reality of childhood) and that just was so touching and such a great way to tie up the book. Obviously it isn't happily ever after, that'd be a cop-out, but it really brings that book full circle in my opinion.
Harry's first Christmas in SS is also another one of my favorite moments. And the wizard's duel in CoS really cracks me up...there are others, but I can't think of them currently...I'll be back. ;)

:D Excluding all Snape scenes (which I've mentioned in the Leaky Cauldron), there are a few I really love.
In GoF when Harry's about to face the Hungarian Horntail... it puts knots in my stomach every time I read it.
In GoF, from Harry's return to Hogwarts w/ Ced's body to the end of the book, including him feeling miserable, Sirius being protective of him, the entire story being retold, the confrontation between Snape and Sirius, Dumbledore's "A new power is arising" speech, the school treating Harry weird, Mrs Weasley gasping at Sirius, and Ron and Hermione trying to treat him like normal.
The Riddle/Harry/saving Ginny incident in CoS
The boggart/Lupin scene in PoA. :)
The shrieking shack scene in PoA.
Snape reading the Witch Weekly article in GoF.
Harry overhearing the conversation about him and Sirius in the Three Broomsticks.
That's all for now. :D

I love the whole shrieking shack scene in PoA. Those few chapters are my favorites in all the books. I read them over and over, and I still love them.
I especially love when Lupin comes in, ignores the kids and figures out what's going on. When he says, "Unless you switched, without telling me?" And Sirius nods. And then Lupin helps him up and "embraces him like a brother." :D :) That's my favorite!

My pet scene: in GoF, when Moody/Crouch gets the Marauder's Map from Harry. It is written rather cleverly, with every action or sentence of Crouch having a double meaning you don't catch until the end.
... and it does involve Snape. :D

I just can't name a favorite- If I go back to the book I'll read the whole book! :p

Unconditional agreement there. As I'm reading these favorite scenes, I keep going, "Yeah, why didn't I mention that one, too?"

Um, like Colli, leaving out the Snape scenes.
There's too many really, but here goes...
My favourite scene in the first book is the Forbidden Forest. I love the atmosphere, it's creepy and so mystical with the centaurs. I think it's really well written.
In CoS I like the meeting with Tom Riddle at the end.
In PoA, the Shreiking Shack. Absolutely brilliant. Seeing the interaction with Sirius, Remus and Snape, as well as finding out the truth about Sirius.
In GoF I really like the scene in the prefects' bathroom. It was the first scene where I really properly connected with Harry (I often have a lot of troble connecting with lead characters).

Seriphus - you took one of my favorites - I love the prefects bathroom scene in GoF w/ Moaning Myrtle complaining that Harry never visits her.
I think my favorite, tho, is at the end of GoF when Mrs. Weasley hugs Harry as if he's one of her own boys. It's one of the first times, if not the first, when Harry is actually taken care of in an affectionate manner - and Doesn't he deserve it? The Maternal part of me cried (and the eye part of me too!). Ok, so it's preggo hormones, but still, it's my favorite. Great to see an adult actually taking a somewhat passionate role in seeing that he is raised with love, or at least, comes in contact with it.:)
Can't wait to see how Harry's and Sirius's relationship develops in the next book.

I have to agree, aside from basically every Snape scene, the prefects bathroom is probably one of the best! I can't believe I didn't think of it (like I said, it's hard, the books just have so much in them that I love).
Seriphus, I totally empathize with the inability to connect with lead characters! I have the hardest time with that when I'm reading sometimes. Though, these books seem to be the exception, I totally could connect with Harry right from the getgo. It's strange, and I can't really explain it here (it's sort of personal, well partially I think)...and I'm not sure I totally understand why.
Vala, yeah, I'm curious as to what's going to happen with Sirius and Harry too.

I would have to say that my favorite scene in the series (minus anything that even mentions Sirius or Lupin mind you!) would have to be the last chapters in GoF. From when Harry brings Cedric back to Hogwarts to the discussion with Dumbledore about the Order of the Phoenix, to the scene in the Great Hall when Dumbledore tells the students about Voldemort, to the end when everyone goes home for the summer. I was choked up throughout the last fifty or more pages of the book! Such brilliant writing! Well... everything she writes is brilliant that JKR! Yeah! haha... OK i'm off to classes :D

My favourite scene has to be when Ron says he'll help Hermione (with something, god what was it?! ) and she hugs him :) I can't even remember what book it was, haven't read them in so long :o
That scene and the scene when Ron and Harry make up after he fights the Horntail. *sighs* I hated them not talking, I cried constantly thoughout those chapters :(
edit:
Oh I remember the scene! It was Buckbeak's case! :D

I'm sure I'll think of more, but here are mine for the moment. :)
The scenes where Lee Jordan is commentating on the quiddich games (especially the cup final in PoA).
Just before Harry faces the horntail. It still makes me nervous when I read it now.
When Harry and Ron are desperate for dates for the ball - "But Harry had just seen Parvati and Lavender come in through the portrait hole. The time had come for drastic action." I'm not sure why, but this always makes me laugh out loud. :D
When all the school is gathered in the hall after Sirius Black has slashed the portrait of the fat lady.
In the shrieking shack, when Harry and co. find out who Lupin and Sirius really are.

My favorite scenes, as others have mentioned, are those at the end of GoF. The sorrow and angst just really get to me-- I hope OoTP is more dark as well...
It's interesting that I always liked all the dark bits of the books, but now that I've been reading fanfic for nearly a year, I'm even more into the dark HP world, and I see so much farther into PoA and CoS than I used to -- what kind of terrible world it is, that JKR is kind of "younging down" and making more light so that they're children's books. These could easily be adult fiction if they address the darkness more... It's fascinating stuff. :)

This is a great scene, I must agree. It reminded me of when I was in Girl Scouts and we had a "lock in" at the local YMCA. We all layed out in sleeping bags on the gym floor and talked till all hours of the morning while our "Troop Moms" patrolled to make sure we were being good... brings back good memories reading scenes like that:)

Hmmm. My favorite scenes?
I love revelation scenes--scenes where a character finds out something amazing about themselves, whether it be their own secret or a public spectacle...
In SS. When Harry finds out he is a wizard. Classic.
Also, I love when Harry finds out he is a parselmouth, and he explains it as best he can to Ron and Hermione with, "I know. I set I boa constrictor on my cousin at the zoo once...it was telling me it had never seen Brazil..." That part gets me.
I also like the last feast, when Harry is toasted along with Cedric. It seems so sad, but sooo...right.
A funnier one...when Fred and George give Harry the Maurader's map.

I love all the scenes mentioned above, but I have a few special ones (to me at least) that I do not think have been posted:
~ Professor Trelawny's prediction in PoA
~ In PoA when Harry and Hermione go back in time to save "more than one innocent life" that night. I enjoy the idea of going back in time and having to do it without being seen. (I just adore Buckbeak in that scene, what a great hippogriff!:D )
~ In PoA , when Harry realizes it was himself he saw across the lake, and when he reaches out to touch Prongs.....I for some reason this part touches me and I sob when I read it.

I loved the first chapter in the GOF. I had just finished reading Azkaban, so i was buzzing and then i moved onto the and it was so exciting.
Also love it when Sirius talks to Harry coming out of the Shrieking Shack and Sirius just lets Snapes head bash off the stone and doesnt care :D Just a wonderful image.
And when the map insults snape :D
Also love the description of the dark mark and when the death eaters all gather.
So many to pick from !!!

I think they will (hopefully) they are the best bits in the book !!
Just hope they get a good Sirius to do the Shack scenes well, not Gary Oldman though :(
Thanks for the nice welcome by the way :)

My all time favorite scene out of the four books :jumps up and down at the thought of book five coming soon: is ...
Ron and Hermione fighting after the Yule Ball, I love it when they argue and you just know they have it for each other. It's just that WEasley feeling in the air, the accomplished "I just blew up a lou and it feels GOOD."
Ron being oblivious, and Harry knows that Hermione knows exactly what they are arguing about. :sigh: I love hogwarts.

Hmm, well off the top of my head...
1) when Sirius casually drops the hint about living with him and Harry immediately wants to know how, when, and where, and Sirius gets all choked up - AWW!!! Sirius is SO sweet!
2) Mr. Weasley gently admonishing the Dursleys' not saying goodbye to Harry when they come to pick him up for the World Cup. He was so surprised and shocked at how mean they really were.
3) Harry storming out of the house after he blows up Aunt Marge (?) (was that her name?) - his strength and conviction and pure rage when he announces that he's leaving RIGHT NOW!
4) Harry's entire ordeal with the Yule Ball and girls :D
5) Harry not wanting to let go of Cedric's body when he gets back and how he repeats that he promised Cedric he'd bring him back and how Dumbledore gently tells Harry to let him go :(
6) Harry and the Mirror of Erised scene
7) Ron attempting to make a phone call, and the Weasleys' attempt to send mail

second favorite scene: when Ron refuses to wear his dress robes. Molly Weasley tell him to go naked, and tells Harry to take a picture of him. She could use a good laugh.
third favorite scene: Lavender exclaims she has Uranus on her chart and Ron asks "Id like to see Uranus Lavender."
fourth favorite scene: "Percy wouldn't believe the truth if it was dancing naked infront of him, only wearing Dobby's tea cozy!":jawdrop: these are parts where I have to stop to laugh

This is a great scene - but I've always wondered how in the world they translated this into other languages
It is such an english language centric joke - a literal translation would make no sense. Does anyone have examples of how this scene is translated?

::wipes tear from eye from laughing so hard:: Ah...only Ron could say something as funny as that. Must be a Weasley thing ;)
fifth favorite scene: Ron sits smiling, telling Hermione to be quiet. She asks him why, his response is. "I'm capturing that moment in my mind. Draco the amazing bouncing ferret!"

Hmm, I love all the scenes with Harry and Sirius together. They are the cutest together and if they ever move in together I just know I am gonna bawl. I particularly liked the scene where Sirius asked Harry to come and live and was so shocked when Harry agreed (PoA) and when Sirius and Harry talked together over the fire (GoF).
I also really loved the scene where Voldemort returned. I think it was JK Rowling's best writing to date!
The books in general are great, but GoF was the best, with PoA a close second!

Oh of course, Gred and Forge! :D Their scenes are not very good to read on buses on the way home, as you try not to burst out into fits of laughter!
I love the one, when Fred and George are introducing themselves to Harry in PoA, after Percy's pompous greet.
"Oh absolutly spiffing!" :D Rotfl!
Well its something like that, but its hilarious!

04-18-2003, 01:21 PM
I know exactly what your talking about. I laugh out loud in the middle of lessons sometimes, gotta stop doing that ;)
Any scene with the twins is hysterical, Im rereading the books ONCE again and this part always gets me...
"Hang on, I think I remember him saying something about it," said the other twin.
"Once-"
"Or twice-"
"A minute-"
"All summer-"
"Oh, shut up,"said Percy the prefect.
Pure genius those two!
If they were at my school, I'd probably be blowing up the lou right along wit them.

I had brave friends that would make newspaper boats and put cherry bombs in them, place them in the bathroom toilette at school and laugh down the hall after the bowl blew. The other would shred the rest of the newspaper into strips, flush and clog the toilette..... Priceless! :notworthy :D
I like the scene where the Dursley boy ate that Ton-tungue candy that Fred and George invented and his tongue went out of control. I liked it when Vernon and Petunia started chucking things at Mr. Weasley and he had a difficult time of trying to fix the fat muggle kid's tungue.

Oh, I agree with all of the above, but the scene with the DADA class and the boggart, when Lupin makes such an effort to buck up Neville (who, it seems will become an even more important character), really makes my heart ache for both of them.
