Alright, I was wondering about this:
I saw a show, just before the Chamber of Secrets, with Ron, Ginny, and Harry on Oprah. There was a boy there also, with some disease, who had conversed with JK about some of his thoughts of what might happen in later books. One was: (Possible spoiler)
The muggle world discovers the existence of wizards.
JK said his predictions were 'scarily close.'
Your thoughts? Will JKR let this happen? It would certainly be interesting. Perhaps the ending of Book 7 will be a sort of unified world, at last.

It would certainly be interesting. Perhaps the ending of Book 7 will be a sort of unified world, at last. Or it would start another war a la the witch burnings of the middle ages? Or, Perhaps the muggles will help bring Voldie and co. down? A really interesting idea...

There has been great speculations what could happen in fanfiction...
Scenerio 1) Wizards over run Muggles. Possible if Voldemort gains more power.
Scenerio 2) Muggles over run Wizards. Because they are scared of the wreck that was caused in the over throwing of Voldemort. Wizards are banned from the use of Magic. Causes loads of hatred against Muggles among purebloods.
Scenerio 3) Muggles are about to find out about Wizards, but are prevented. They do random attacks on Wizards but don't win the war as in Scenario 2 - causes hatred against Muggles and Muggleborn.
hmmm...
there are loads of possibilities, but somehow couldn't see it coming out calmly without war...

You're right, Elfea. I mean, look at all the hostility towards JK Rowling because of these popular books she wrote about magical kids and a magical school.
Muggles wouldn't just say "oh, ok. Cool" :D
But I don't really see how the Muggles could overrun the Wizards..

Oh they could - if the Ministry doesn't act in time, and lets the situtation go too far.
The Muggles could slaughter Magical folk, or just persuade the Ministry to make using magic illegal...

Making magic illegal?
Kind of like traffic laws in the United States... it's impossible to force everyone to comply.
:) Weak little Pettigrew killed 13 people with a single curse. How are Muggles going to defeat that?

First of all, thank you for a short story (no, not fan fiction) idea. :)
Second of all, here are my thoughts on the matter.
IMO, wizards, especially those with a dislike for muggles, underestimate their intelligence, let alone what they are capable of.
Yes, yes, yes, Wizards have magic and curses that can kill at least thirteen people at a time and all that horrid stuff. Along with poisonous potions and slippery words. But lets not forget a Muggle's power.
Wizards have magic and curses and evil wizards on the rise.
Muggles have tanks and evil war lords on the rise and (unfortunately) "atom-splitting" technology  (I hate fission. I just hate everything about it. Especially the science tests.)
Yes, most likely, wizards can get over the tanks and make them disappear, what have you... But how would they handle a chemical attack???
Oh, this is getting too scary to think about and this would never ever happen in the books because of all its scariness. And I shouldn't have mentioned it. BUT anyways.
I think that about 50% of the population or less will be accepting (reluctantly of course) of the wizard world. But the other percentage won't be so accepting. I think that's the most likely of things to happen.

It would still be hard for the Muggles to find the wizards in order to blow them up. If only magical people can get into Diagon Alley, then it stands to reason that places like Hogwarts are the same, and the Muggles wouldn't be able to find wizard settlements. All wizards have to do is lie low and pretend to be muggles in order to survive.

pretend to be muggles in order to survive
But the problem is that they end up hating Muggles if they have to do that. Besides, they're already doing that... and some of them hate doing it.
And Muggles aren't stupid - they can find their way to Hogsmeade, Hogwarts, Diagon Alley...
And of course, there is always possibility of some extreme Muggle-lover betrayal...
