:) Normally I wouldn't care about such a movie.. but since this version of Peter Pan (the first one true to the original story, so I hear) stars our lovely Jason Isaacs as Hook, I've taken interest. :D
It's due to be released in the US and the UK Christmas of this year, and they're filming in Australia and New Zealand.
Oh.. and there are already people whining about LotR influences.
Here's what Harry at AICN (not linking it due to language) had to say:
Hey folks, Harry here... After the two images of the Darling family kids, I figured it'd be quite some time before I got a look at that infernal boy, yes, I'm talking about Peter Pan, himself. Well, here's what Peter Pan looks like as shot by the cinematographer of MOULIN ROUGE!, ROMEO AND JULIET (Donald McAlpine) can look like. Isn't this a beautiful image. I can't wait to see Pan fly and move... And I can't even imagine that lovely scene with the golden sparkle of pixie dust as Tink flies about Pan. I also love that Peter has a Pan flute on him there. Very nice touch, I think. Does that mean that James Newton Howard's score will play with ancient lute style instruments? We'll see on Christmas of this year, that's when it is due to hit screens. Here ya go...

I'm very much looking forward to this movie (mostly because of Jason Isaacs of course :D ).
This is not a very good pic, but there's our Hook. :)

:( You can't even tell that's Jason...
:D Here's a rather swoonworthy drawing depiction of our lovely Jason from the same website:
http://www.jeremynorthamgallery.com/Jason/PeterPan/Hook.jpg
And a mini-JI interview from the same website:
JI: Yes, I'm living on the Gold Coast shooting Peter Pan. Which is incredibly exciting because it's actually the first film of Peter Pan that has ever been made. When I say that most people frown slightly and go, "What about ….?" And then they realise they have nothing to follow up with. Then you think "What about the cartoon?" then they realise it's not a film it's a cartoon. Then there is 'Hook' but that is a story about a middle-aged man who can't stop using his mobile phone and Wendy's story doesn't even get a look in.
Ours is done just how JM Barry wanted it. It's about a 12-year-old girl living in Victorian London who is told she has to grow up and so runs away to this place that maybe is real or maybe is in her head. And the same actor gets to play Mr. Darling and Captain Hook, which is fantastic for me. It does mean I work twice as hard.
It's wonderful because it has all the special effects and the extravaganza of a big budget film. But that's not half of it because it is a beautiful story of the coming of age of a young girl. In the Victorian days there was no such thing as adolescence, you were a child and then you were a woman being prepared for marriage. I can't imagine how terrifying that must have been.
So far I have only shot the Mr. Darling Victorian London stuff and as Mr. Darling's character I'm terribly constricted of course by Victorian Society, so I can't wait to throw all that off and play the loose carnal Hook. It's going to be wonderful.
Must.. have.. news...

I can tell it's him! He's got that signature icy gaze!:swoon: When's that coming out? Over the summer? Must rewatch Hook, it's a great movie!
Oh, and since when is a cartoon not a film?

More drama on Pan set
From Sydney Confidential
March 27, 2003
MORE drama from the set of the $167 million Hollywood remake of Peter Pan, now in production up on the Gold Coast at Movie World.
Australian director PJ Hogan – of Muriel's Wedding and My Best Friend's Wedding fame – had to cut short filming last week and rush to hospital when his teenage son was suffering suspected appendicitis.
"PJ had to leave the set half an hour before it was due to wrap because his son had fallen ill and was taken to hospital," a production spokeswoman said.
"PJ's son was not kept in overnight as expected, and PJ was back on set bright and early the next day. No time was lost."
You may notice a certain sensitivity regarding the time Hogan was away from the set.
That's because Peter Pan has been dogged by rumours shooting was eight weeks' behind schedule, delaying other projects booked into the studios.
Not true, we're told.
"Filming started in October and is due to be completed in May, and it's still right on track," the spokeswoman promised.
"A story keeps going around that it's running late, but it's a huge production and was always going to take a long time."
The film, laden with studio-shot special effects, has a cast and crew of 500.
Jeremy Sumpter – the 14-year-old teen who plays Peter – has also been in the wars, having broken an ankle and been hit on the head by a ceiling fan.
No such bad luck for Brit Jason Isaacs, who plays Captain Hook.
 Jason.. I'm glad he's still ok. :D
It's a bit odd to hear another director called "PJ", isn't it?
alqua
03-29-2003, 08:09 AM
True. "PJ" only makes me think of one director, and that is Peter Jackson. I have the same problem with the New Line logo; Whenever I see it, I start thinking about the LotR, even if I was going to start watching a totally different movie. :D

http://www.theage.com.au/ffxImage/urlpicture_id_1051381846651_2003/04/27/E-isaacs2.jpg
British actor Jason Isaacs has been enjoying Australia's sun, surf and pirate ships as he films two roles for PJ Hogan's Peter Pan. Lawrie Zion reports.
The "hello" on the other end of the line sounds so nonchalantly Australian that it takes a moment or two before the penny drops that the man behind it is British actor Jason Isaacs.
But perhaps the (slightly imagined) local inflection shouldn't be all that surprising. After all, he's been living on the Gold Coast for most of the past year while playing the dual roles of Captain Hook and Mr Darling in P.J. Hogan's big-budget version of Peter Pan.
Born in Liverpool, and a graduate of Bristol University's law school, the 39-year-old has forged a diverse career on the screen since his first film appearance in 1989's The Tall Guy, appearing in more than 30 features, including Armageddon, Event Horizon, The Patriot and Black Hawk Down, mostly in bad-guy roles. And last year, he gained a foothold in the Harry Potter series by playing wily wizard Lucius Malfoy, who is the white-haired father of Draco (played by Tom Felton) and an active Death Eater who keeps a secret chamber under his drawing room to conceal his Dark Arts equipment.
...
In the meantime, Isaacs is looking forward to seeing the completed version of Peter Pan, which also stars Jeremy Sumpter in the title role and Rachel Hurd-Wood as Wendy Darling.
Though a fan of PJ Hogan's Muriel's Wedding, Isaacs insists that Peter Pan is the film the Australian director was born to make, "because he never really grew up, and he's very childish and I can say that because I'm the actor who never grew up."
Isaacs also insists that the film will be different from previous attempts to commit the J.M.Barrie novel to the screens.
"The versions we've seen before have never been what Barrie intended. It's not about a boy who never grew up at all. It's a rites-of-passage movie about a 12-year-old girl in Victorian London in a quite repressive household who is told that she has to grow up, and in those days there was no adolescence. Wendy is so traumatised here that she runs off to Neverland, and one reason you have the same actor playing Mr Darling and Captain Hook is that you never know if Neverland is a real place or one that Wendy's invented to work out what she's going to do about this growing-up business."
As well as his enthusiasm for working with Hogan, Isaacs has relished the opportunity to spend so much time in Australia.
"I'd be happy not to pack, and I've put a lot of feelers out about future projects here. I like the fact that I've worn the same pair of shorts and T-shirt since I've arrived and don't have to put on airs." Maybe he'll end up with a real Australian accent after all.

Anyway, the trailer's been released! And some dude from Yahoo!Movies had this to say about the movie (which I guess he's seen in some fashion, although the release date is Christmas):
Well, the trailer is now in theaters, and you can watch it online here at Yahoo! Movies. I've been excited about this movie since I first heard that director P.J. Hogan wanted to deliver a faithful, big budget adaptation of the book in a live-action way it's never been done (starring an actual boy rather than a woman, for example). This trailer delivers a promise of pretty much everything I was hoping it would be. The tone is inherently and 100% British, through and through (giving it a bit of a Harry Potter feel, but I think that's terrific), and the pre-teen flirtation going on between Wendy and Peter Pan, well, it's just about perfect too. The last half of the trailer shifts from the story of Wendy and Peter to Peter and Hook, and is filled with lots of action scenes, and well... big screen eye candy goodness. I am *so* excited about this movie, and I haven't been a kid for some 20 years now (well, not in body at least; I just bought Hulk Hands today :). There might not be a Harry Potter movie this holiday season like the last two years, but I think this movie starring one of Harry's literary predecessor could potentially take his place. This trailer just feels like it's from a hit movie to me. It looks like P.J. Hogan really got this one right.
Anyway, you can download the trailer in Quicktime or Windows Media at the official site: http://www.peterpanmovie.net/.
Jason looks wonderful. :swoon: Enjoy!

I think I'm going to have to give the book another read. It's been years since I read it. And if all you know of Peter Pan is the Disney cartoon or the musical or Hook, you don't really know the story. The real story is much more elaborate. And there are differences, such as Tinkerbell dies.
I love Jason Isaacs and can't wait to see him in this. :)

I saw the trailer for this not too long ago. Lookin' good!! Jason Isaacs looks like he'll make a wonderful Hook.
And not to change the subject (too much), but they're also making a movie based on the life of the author, J. M. Barrie, who will be played by Johnny Depp. Also it has Dustin Hoffman who played Captain Hook in Hook. Both look promising!

Chiana - as Lithorose said, J.M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan. It is a disturbing story, in print - though I find that with a lot of J.M. Barrie. He didn't believe in happy endings, exactly - or perhaps, let us say that he believed in the triumph of reality over sentiment or fantasy, which is perhaps more precise.
And - er - which version of the Robin Hood legends did you read? There is no one work. The base material is the large number of ballads, mostly surviving in late Middle English, which is pretty much readable if you have a feel for language. The best of the books are based on the ballads. Lemme guess - you read the Howard Pyle version?
ooooh Peter Pan.......
when I was little I used to pray to change into Peter-- it never happened though..... ;)
When I first heard that a new movie was to be made (and that Jason's in it) I nearly choked-- from excitement off course!
I'm gonna watch & luuuurve it! Looks good on the trailer... :p
Oh Peter...... :swoon:
P.S. Now that I'm older I realize the weirdness of a girl wanting to be Peter Pan, but maybe I just (and still) long for the magic of pure childhood and purity of heart -- and, oh yeah-- fighting Hook..... :D
lithorose
10-01-2003, 04:30 PM
It's not really that weird. Peter Pan had all the fun, as boys often do in books. They get to go on the adventures, and slay the monsters, and be the rescuers. Girls are usually just along for the ride.
And hey, half the time Peter Pan is played by a girl anyway...;)
Lanen, I never found Peter Pan disturbing. Maybe I'll have to re-read it now that I'm older.
It's not really that weird
Good, now I can rest in peace :D

Ooooooooooh, I'm like the only person I know excited by this film!!!!! I can't wait :D:):D It looks absolutely FAB!!! I'd never read the book and only seen the Disney version a couple of times a long time ago so I don't know why I'm so excited, but I think the story has always appealed to me. I just finished the book today and for one thing, Kristin lied, in the book I read, which said it was by J.M.Barrie, Tinkerbell did NOT die so maybe I read the wrong book  . Anyway, I absolutely loved it, was just so delightful to read and it's written in such a fun way it's wonderful, everyone should read it!!! The end made me cry SO much, I kinda threw the book across the room and sat there crying for ages :( :( :( I didn't want it to end like that but it couldn't end any other way, I just wish it ahdn't *sniffs*. Can't wait til the film though, looks pretty damn cool to me :D
Kristin
10-17-2003, 12:25 AM
I did not lie. It's mentioned when Peter comes to visit Wendy one of the last times. From the actual book:
When she expressed a doubtful hope that Tinker Bell would be glad to see her he said, "Who is Tinker Bell?"
"O Peter," she said, shocked; but even when she explained he could not remember.
"There are such a lot of them," he said. "I expect she is no more."
I expect he was right, for fairies don't live long, but they are so little that a short time seems a good while to them.

I'm very satisfied with the film, well all except for the actress who played Tinkerbell....but the rest was marvelous. It remained true, all but 2% of the time, to the book and the original disney film! I couldn't beleive it. And the young bloke who played Peter, he captured the character's tendancy to switch emotions perfectly!
Febuary, oh thats terrbile...perhaps you could try downloading it. OR in NYC they have street venders who sell films that are still in theatres on DVD. It's not very...legal I'd guess....but waiting till Febuary. My friend, you have all my sympathies

Isn't it the best movie?
I felt the 'I believe in faeries' was a bit overdone after the first five minutes of it, but the rest of the movie I simply had no quams with. I LOVED IT!
And Jeremy was exceptional, like I said, he protrayed the random faces and moods Peter Pan had in the book. Which I was very happy with, the stayed loyal to the book, which really is rare anymore. All the kids were perfect for their roles...I've always wanted to be a lost girl. I envied Wendy, and my friends still tease me because it was my favorite movie when I was little. And it still is, and they especially found it odd that I've been waiting for the film since July, when I first saw the preview trailer.
I try to get everyone to go with me, I would probably meet someone I've seen in the hallways at school and say, "Wanna go see Peter Pan? I'm chiana by the way!"
