Oh my god! They're amazing! I love the kids Brit one! :notworthy

Hm... I'm not incredibly enthralled by the US one. I like the eerie blue coloring, it just doesn't really match the others... maybe it's not supposed to. Since book 4 was the turning point and all. Now I just want to know what all those doors are about.

And hm, a phoenix on the British versions. How surprising. ;)

I like the UK adult one. Maybe I'll order it. Something I don't understand is how they're supposed to be for adults, but they still say 'Harry Potter' in BIG letters, tipping everyone off anyway.

In the US one, Harry suddenly got a lot older, didn't he? in 1-4 he stayed pretty much the same age on the cover. Finally acknowledging that he is aging.

Oooooo
I love the USA design, not what I expected with the past four covers though...but I like it nevertheless:p
I cant wait to get OoTP!!!!

Neat-o! :D Of the UK covers, I've always preferred the adult versions to the kid ones, and these continue that pattern... of course, the US covers are the ones I've gotten to know and love, and the cover shown - as others noted - in some ways doesn't "fit" with the previous four (I hope the back cover and inside flaps show lots of stuff with significance you don't realize until you've read the story, I rather like that feature of the previous covers) but is nonetheless quite cool in its own way. And incidentally, I think Harry has been aging on the US covers; quite slowly through the first three, more noticeably on GoF and even more so on the new one... puberty's a wonderful thing, eh? :o ;)

I like that aspect of the US covers too:D I looked at all my book covers, and I can't see any difference in Harry's age, but maybe that's just me. Maybe we can discern what will happen from this cover? I see a lot of doors and candles in that picture. Unfortunately that doesn't tell me anything:(

Oooh, I like them all! And lucky artists--they probably got to read the books before they designed the covers. Wish I was great at drawing. ;)

Seriphus
03-21-2003, 11:09 AM
Unfortunately for the artists they didn't get to read the books:
The contents of the book are so secret that even the artist, illustrator Jason Cockcroft, wasn't allowed to read it before drawing the cover. Instead J K Rowling and her editor at Bloomsbury, Emma Matthewson, came up with the idea and then told the artist the kind of image they wanted them to create.

Actually, Mary (U.S. Cover) has read the book, so the scene she drew does reflect the reading. Some things to note about that scene:

-Harry looks much older, suggesting this may be a scene from towards the end of the book;Mary drew the other 4 US covers and books 2 and 3 both depicted scenes from towards the end

- Harry is holding his wand in his LEFT hand, but is right handed

-The room is circular - is it in a tower?

-He is looking at something behind him, and also looking up

-All the candles in the foreground blow to the left, and in the background blow to the right- this suggests a circular room again, and also a whirlwind.

-The sleeve of his robe also suggests wind - it's really blowing in there!

Actually, I think that's just the British artist. For some reason, I think I remember reading that Mary Grandpre got to read it..

I was laying on my bed last night after the news had repeated the same thing 80 times and I had finally decided to turn it off wondering what it is going to be like when we get the book.. When I hold it in my hands... when we have new material to memorize and dissect completely.... how weird it's going to be to have something new. To smell the freshly-printed pages. To pick out new errors and possible cases of foreshadowing. To come on here in Lit Disc and be all crazy because some people have finished it and some haven't.. and we have to use spoiler tags until they have.

But just to HOLD the book.. it seems unreal. I really am beginning to love our American cover.

:o I need a life. I'm fantasizing over a children's book. :p ;)

I want that book soooo bad...Why WHY do we have to wait sooo long? Can't us very faithful fans get some sort of advance copy? We wouldn't show it to anyone, we swear.

By the way, I have calmed down a bit and the Harry/Phoenix comment was a result of some temporary insanity.

That would be nice, write to Rowling;

Dear J.K.

I am a devote Harry Potter fan, and I dont think I can wait till June 21st. So could I maybe have an advanced copy of some sort? I promise I wont show it to another living soul! I'm just itching to read your new work, I've read the others a hundred times at least. So please send me an advanced copy! I'd be overwhelmingly greatful.
Yours Truly

P.S. Please move fast!

It'll be much like when GoF came out, I think; I look forward to again experiencing everything Colli described, as well as the joy of watching all the little kids in the bookstore get their copies (and the amusement of watching them try to hold books that weigh about as much as they do ;))

note to self - call bookstore, see if any specific plans for release party yet; of course i reserved my copy there many weeks ago :)

I called WalMart yesterday (they're open 24-7) and asked if they were going to be taking preorders for the book... the poor woman assured me that there would be plenty, but I just don't know. I'd feel much better preordering it at the Waldenbooks in Ashland, even if it is 40 minutes away. My parents just wouldn't let me out of the house to drive that far away that hour of night. ;) They've offered to pay the extra for NOT preordering if I just go to Walmart.. 10 minutes away. :D

lithorose
03-25-2003, 05:00 PM
But a Walden's has so much better an atmosphere than a Walmart. It would be much more exciting to pick one up in a real bookstore. Besides, the extra drive makes it much better to pick up. What you need is to convince some of your friends to go and make a big party of it. Then your parents will agree!:D (esp. if any of them have responsible older sisters or something)

I once got a Redwall book signed for my sister. I saw BJ was going to be in Portland, and the only signing he was at that I wasn't working during was at some little shop that I'd never heard of. So I looked it up, called and placed an order, and took the bus out. It was cold. It was January. I was just getting over a cold. I read the map wrong. I had to catch a different bus. I walked a mile to the store. I sat through the signing (which was very entertaining), and stood in front of the bus line on the way home. By now it was completely dark. Oh, wait, it's Sunday. That sign says the bus doesn't run on Sunday. I walked the mile back. I waited for any bus to come along. Finally got home. Told my sister she'd BETTER appreciate her gift.:D

If you live anywhere near a Barnes and Noble, they have had a midnight opening for GoF. And DONT believe anyone who isn't a book store when they say "there will be plenty to go around". Or even book stores for that matter, to be safe pre-order a copy. Their bloody liars, what if there isn't enough to go around?! :trout: Yikes, got alittle carried away there. But try preordering a copy on Barnes and Nobles web site, or just camp out by the nearest book store. ::with a rock in case they didn't order any copies for the public:: ;)

I don't know, Walmart may very well have plenty. :D Here, at least. This is the same county that the only theater showing TTT wasn't even sold out the day after... There are loads of HP fans.. not many teens/adults and I can get there early and push all the kids out of the way. ;)

My brother went to the same Walmart to pick up the FotR DVD last August (I was out of town) at midnight... he said there wasn't a SOUL there.

As for a party, I don't really care.. I just want my book.. I just want to get home and read for a few hours. And then go see Phantom of the Opera. :D (And maybe a few weeks later go to Europe with a wind ensemble. Anyone have $3000 lying around they want to give me?)
