I did a little dip into the void, and discovered, we had to thread on our favourite characters!

So, who is your favoruite character and why? Or characters even ;)

I have four, Remus, Hermione, Ron and Sirius.

I adore them each in their own way.

Hermione is an amazing woman. She's brave, intelligent, and just great! :D

Ron is my Ron ;)

Sirius and Remus... :swoon: :notworthy

Need you ask?

Snape, first and foremost.

Hermione.. just because I identify with her.

Harry... by the time GoF starts, I like him. I especially admire him at the end of GoF.

Sirius... what a nice guy! And still slighty creepy. Maybe it's his interaction with Snape that makes me like him so much. ;)

Canon characters:

Harry. Definately. And Hermione. And Ron, when he's behaving or being sarcastic.

Fanon characters:

Draco. Harry. Do I need to say more? ;)

I like too many of the characters.

Harry--he's just likable. He's kind of like...umm...chaotic good, if you know what I mean.

Hermione--she's just cool. She's brilliant and shows a huge dedication to her studies and her friends.

Ron--he's funny. I love comic relief.

Fred and George--see above.

Bill--gotta love the fang earring.

Remus Lupin--I love that whole secretly tormented thing...and the fact he's a wolf.

Sirius--just great! a little dangerous, a little like Harry in the chaotic good thing.

I'll write some more if I think of them!

Ah, yes, yes, of course!

Ron... Dunno why, I guess it's that overshaddowed-by-everyone thing that he puts up with. Oh my dear Ron!

Harry... He puts up with a lot and he's still got his sanity.

Hermione... Love her bickerings with Ron!

Sirius... Gotta love that escaped convict bad boy thing with a heart of gold. Oh, and he obviously loves dogs ;) ;)! Me too!

Remus... Face it, werewolves are always cool. Remus Lupin, Oz (Seth Green) from Buffy...

I also like Draco and Snape, just cause Draco gets under my skin so well... and Snape, well, he's Snape. What's not to like? Hehe. He gives people hard times. As long as I'm not the one who someone's giving a hard time to, I like those kind of people. LOL. He puts people in their place.

Snape is my favourite, the poor misunderstood, tortured soul. :p He's funny and sexy and I identify with him the most.

Remus is the character I aspire to be like: laid back, humourous, friendly, putting up with a lot, but not complaining about it. An all-round nice guy.

I also like Quirrell for his warped view on the world "There is no good and bad, only power..." and because I feel sorry for him putting all his effort into Voldemort's cause when he could have used his abilities to a more useful end; Tom Riddle because his path is one of the most interesting and central to the whole story; and Draco because he is like a little version of Snape and has so much potential as a character.

My favorite characters have changed since I started reading the series... so here we go:

First and foremost (again, Colli and I agree on something!) I love snape... *hand for forehead and :swoon: out cold* There is just something about that man! Tall, dark and mysterious... and just oh so fiiiine ;) (It's OK, Colli.. you can :swoon: again... or drool!)

Second, Hermione... I totally ID with her... it's sad... she's a total bookworm and you can always catch me reading... and she came into her own when she was 14 and probably even more so when she's 15 and I'm the same way. Just the way she treats "her boys" is hilarious sometimes... just like a mama hen

Let's see... Remus and Sirius come next just cuz they're Remus and Sirius... do I seriously need a reason for these two? ;) Cannot WAIT to see them in the movie!!

Who's next? Probably Harry... but because he is the main character and all the attention is usually focused on him... I don't know, that kind of takes away from the character for me...

Ummmm I'm really tired (put in a 40+ hour week with the kiddies!) and can't think of anything intelligent to say beyond this... haha

This is perhaps a slightly strange one, but I always liked Mr. Weasley.. his enthusiasm for all things Muggle always amuses me, and makes me laugh. Like the experience with the 'ecklectic' fire!

I think I like him partly because he's almost like an archaelogist/historian kind of guy, as excited as a little boy whenever he comes across some amazing new Muggle device that he hasn't seen before. And as I like history, this appeals to me, I guess!

I also like Fred and George, and their buddy Lee (right? Lee?) who does the commentary at the Quidditch: they always tend to amuse me. :)

:D StarGazr, dearest, what makes you think I'd swoon over that? ;) It couldn't be the beta I did of your fan fic :D

I like Lee Jordan's commentaries a lot, especially with the serious McGonagall right beside him. They're so opposite.. they make a great team. :D

Gotta love the Weasleys! I think I like Charlie the best out of all of them, though he hardly makes an appearance. Bill is a little too obviously cool; but Charlie's keepin' it real, so to speak:)

Sirius is my favorite, followed closely by Lupin and then Snape (yes, Stargazr, I do actually like him; I guess I just have different ideas about the character than you;)) And a hear, hear! to whoever said Lupin and Sirius don't need explaining!

I also kinda like Neville. He gets the short end of every stick yet keeps on going. And Cedric seemed like a cool guy before they killed him:mad:

I like Snape in the movies, he brings out the charachter really well but I like Ron still, and the only reason I like Rupert is because he has the same personality as Ron, they did a good job in choosing who would be who, I hope they do a movie for Harry potter and the Goblet of Fire though...

There's Ginny with her facination of Harry :swoon:
Ron with his love of sweets(and hermione)
Fred and George in general(who else blows up a lou?)
Percy...well maybe his secret love affair? :o
Charlie and Bill, who else takes care of dragons and works for the wizard bank?!
Molly because she can stand in her tracks against a hurricane(mainly the twins) :D
AND finally Mr. Weasley who loves to play with matches!

Ron has been my favourite right from the very start. If he ever dies there will be tears.

Then its Krum, i really, really hope he is in the 5th one. I think that i just like him cause all my hero's are sports people and the one that i love just now is young and Bulgarian so i imagine Krum just like him.

Also think Snape is a superb character,i cant wait to see how he develops.

Sirius and Lupin are also great.

And Voldemort as well, such an amazing baddie, he is so evil but is such a genius and that makes me fear him so much.

ChianaWeasley
03-28-2003, 04:15 PM
Wow I've never met anyone who choose Voldmort as one of their favorite characters  Not thats theres anything wrong with it, I've just never seen it before.:)

Xazinon
03-28-2003, 11:50 PM
Voldemort is certainly an interesting one! Lots of people do tend to like the bad guys better than the good guys (of which I am one), especially when the good guys get all high and mighty and just TOO good, really: the bad guys tend to have more depth to their characters sometimes.

Voldemort though, I'm not sure: he's not one of my favouritest baddies. He seems to be relatively minor in many ways in the stortlines so far, for one thing. In Chamber of Secrets, the basilisk was more the threat than Tom Riddle was, for example. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but Voldemort hasn't really inspired the fear in my opinion that someone like Darth Vader did! Vader ruled, until he went good at the end, which sucked! :)

Voldemort obviously inspires fear in most of the wizard community, but there hasn't been much of a feed-off from that into the stories: it mostly seems to be in the past. However, now that he has managed to get his body back, he could really start getting evil, and I for one would like to see it! :)

Elfëa
03-29-2003, 07:45 AM
Agree Xaz,

Voldie's interesting. But as most characters, he's minor. :) (Gah, I think everyone else but Harry's minor...)

I hope JKR won't pull Harry too Heroic and High! Because that makes his character too difficult to relate to and because he's our eye to the books, if we cannot relate to him at all, it cuts down the magic we can view through him. :)

ChianaWeasley
03-29-2003, 04:35 PM
Well with most bad guys, you get differant kinds. Like you both said the milder sort and then the really vemonous sort. Voldemort really falls into the middle...well I cannot find the words to place him at the moment. But he has the effect of making people fear him, and his motives are purely horrible. But when it comes to Voldemort in other ways, he's rather tacky and Dr. Evilish .

For instance he always fails to kill Harry, yet after all those years people are too afraid to speak his name. Maybe in the next few books he'll develop more, and give us a reason (as a reader) to really fear him more.
Get what I'm saying, its hard to explain.

Yep, I get you Chiana: that's what I was trying to get at. He seems all evil and everything, but when it comes down to it he's really rather ineffectual and gets beaten rather easily. :)

He kind of has a "I'll get you next time, Gadget... next tiiime!" mentality I reckon!

No offense to Voldemort lovers, but I still think he needs some work to be a really evil dude. ;)

The thing that made me think that he was an excellent baddie was the idea about the dark mark.

When Mr Weasley decribed what it was like back then for people coming home and seeing that above your roof and the realisation that your family were lying dead inside just made me realise how powerful he was, how much heartache he caused, why people fear to speak his name and why people were so grateful to Harry for stopping him.

Also the death eaters. The way he made his own army as well, that fear him yet worship him also builds up his image as the ultimate dark lord if you know what i mean.

They both sort of creates the image of how horrific it will be if he ever regains full power.

You're right, actually: that is pretty scary. I haven't actually read the books in a little while, so I'd forgotten bits of it, though I remember most of it. He has kind of an evil aura around him, particularly in the first book, but JKR hasn't really utilised it yet to much of an extent.

I remembered after I posted last time that Voldemort and his cronies did actually kill Cedric, so perhaps he is a bit more evil than I was giving him credit for!

He has a lot of potential, definitely, with the power he can wield via Death Eaters: anyone who can dominate people like that needs some semblance of respect paid to them!
He needs to do something about Harry though: he seems to be his perpetual Achilles heel. I don't think the full force of his evil will be seen unless he can really damage Harry in some way, like killing off one of his friends. With tales of a death in the next book, it may well happen!
I guess what I'm saying is that he could definitely be most excellent at being evil, but he needs to get past the Sideshow Bob mentality of always getting beaten by a kiddie. ;)

Throughout the four books, Voldemort has developed into a better villian, he grows along with the rest of the characters. Which is an aspect either I've taken into wrong determination, or J.K.Rowling did it on purpose. Either way it makes the books even better. I didn't really fear him in the first book, it was the whole "oh, well yeah..I can see how he COULD be terrifying". Then in the second book you fear his alter ego, more the voldemort himself. Both the Basilisk and Tom Riddle. And the third book, you feared Severus throughout the book. Then in the fourth book, you really begin to fear Voldemort it actuallysets in. Because he's more interactive and present throughout the whole book. And that ending ....there are no words to describe my suspense when i first read it. Even the next twenty times I read it I get nervous,LOL. :D :) :p

But overall I think Voldemort, is a good "baddie" as we like to put it ;)
He's growing, from the Dr. Evil into something else. something alot more threatning. Wow....that came out the way I wanted it to, LOL!
Maybe slacking in art class sparks my verbal tendancies on the keyboard...

Ooh, very good response Chiana! It makes sense to me! I shall bow to your superior familiarity with the text. :notworthy:

Art class? And slacking? Well, there's two phrases I never thought I'd hear in the same sentence! ;)

ChianaWeasley
04-02-2003, 01:31 PM
why thank you Xaz...Im hoping you weren't being sarcastic...;)
Its really hard to tell in this type of forum, that or I'm just not with it today. And yes, slacking in art class. You have to be in the class to understand. We sat around yesturday and checked grades and did journal entries. Which I'd done way before, so I got online. It's he only class I have with a comp i can use.

Xazinon
04-03-2003, 03:17 AM
No no, I wasn't being sarcastic, at least about the praising your opinion part! I thought it was very well thought out, though on reflection the last line and the bowing may have been a tad melodramatic. ;)

As far as art class was concerned, well, that certainly was sarcastic, I must admit: didn't mean anything by it though, hehe!
It was just that my experiences of art class tend to be ones where work is non-existent and people just clown around all the time. I think art class would be kind of neat when it was working properly actually, I've just never seen that happen!

What kind of art are you doing? I was never any good at art. I can write OK, but when it comes to drawing and painting and stuff a stick figure is about the best I can do! Drat these untalented hands! :)

Just to prove that I wasn't trying to offend, Chiana, please notice that I resisted the temptation to offer up finger-painting as the main basis of your art class. It was an effort, but I managed it! ;) :D

ChianaWeasley
04-03-2003, 02:03 PM
LOL. Finger paint...nope. I'm in Drawing 1, with gesture drawings and ficitious spaces:rolleyes: . And we dont get much work done, I'm typing on one of the art comps right now. And when I finish a project, I have close to five days to do....well nothing actually.
I'm the opposite of you, Im pretty good at art stuff, and I love to write. But like....crap!
::Chiana quickly turns off comp as Klomp blows a cascett::

Xazinon
04-04-2003, 12:40 AM
Wow, gesture drawings and ficticious spaces huh? I'm not sure exactly what that is, but it sounds very artsy! :) I gather by the roll of the eyes though it doesn't impress you too much, hehehe!
If I need something drawn I know who to talk to though! :)

Aww, I dunno, you seem to know what you're talking about most of the time, I think you'd be OK at writing! If you can do that and draw you can write a children's book or something and save money by not having to hire an illustrator! Hurrah! ;)

LOL, I've dragged this thread OT now, haven't I? Cod sarn it!

Ok, lessee:
Gilderoy Lockhart is one of my favourite characters too! Very amusing fellow indeed! Chances are, if they make me laugh, I like em! :)

ChianaWeasley
04-05-2003, 08:30 AM
Sorry about cutting off in the middle of my sentence, Klomp blew a fuse

But anyway, Gilderoy was one of those characters that just kind of GOT to me. He annoyed me to the point of throwing the book across the room. And when you hear about him at the end, you just want to slp the dufus! But I must say the actor who portayed him in the movie did a Great job!
:)

Xazinon
04-05-2003, 08:40 AM
Yeah, I guess he was a little annoying, but he still amused me: I guess it was nice to see someone other than Harry Potter getting some attention for once! :)
I was glad that he didn't manage to get away with his memory charming nastiness, but I couldn't help but feel sorry for him after losing his memory, despite the fact that he had done the same thing to heaps of other people.

I didn't see Lockhart as throw the book across the room material, but I certainly know what you mean! Many a time that has happened to me, and usually as a result I don't end up reading any sequels if there is any. Well, I mean, why should I? :)

ChianaWeasley
04-06-2003, 08:52 PM
Yes the only time I actually enjoyed Gilderoy was when he lost his memory. Especially when he asks if Dumbledore needs a sword. "That boys got one you can borrow."

A jumped for joy in CoS when Ron knocks him out with a rock, I wanted to do that while reading the book.

Like I said before without Lockhart there really wouldn't be a plot.
So it goes to show you....well I dunno how to eloquantly phrase it so...every village has an idiot, otherwise who else would lie passed out on the corner and provide entertainment and plot.

LOL, that was me being philosophical and winging it at the same time :D  ;)

Hehe, how very deep of you Chiana! I always wondered about those village idiots, and now I know! Next time I see one, I shall go up to them and thank them for their contribution to popular storytelling. ;) :)

LOL, thanking the village idiots...haven't heard that one before. Then again you ARE from Australia, on the other side of the globe..well kind of anyway.;)

But I guess Lockhart was ok. BUT only in the sense of building up a good plot.

I'd like to see more of the slytherins in general, not just Draco and his "posse". But Milicent and Marcus and all others.
Yeah, Im weird like that;)
But seriously I would, I'd like to see more into the lives of Slytherin students.

lithorose

I'd like to see more of any students that aren't Gryffindor period. And it'd be nice to see more than one dimensional Slytherin's too.

Xazinon
04-08-2003, 04:08 AM
Yep, I agree: hmm, I seem to be doing a lot of that today! :)

It would be nice to see more from the Slytherins, Chiana, but I agree with lithorose that it would be just as nice to see some involvement from the other houses as well!
At least one of the main characters (Draco) is a Slytherin, even if he is a particularly nasty one: Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw hardly rate a mention most of the time! :)

I'd like to see Harry, or Ron, or Hermione, make friends with someone from one of the other houses: I mean, Gryffindor can't be the only house with 'nice' people in it, can it? And even if these new friends were sensible and didn't want to go on death-defying adventures all the time like Potter and Co., they could help Hermione with research in the library! Or, um, help them scheme! Or go to the shops with them and have lunch and such! Why can't everyone just all be friends, man? :D

One more thing:

Ahem Chiana, YOU'RE on the other side of the globe, not me! Nyahh! ;) :D

Seriphus
04-08-2003, 10:30 AM
I totally agree. There must be some nice Slytherins, surely.

It would be good to see Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff compete more with the main two houses. It gets kinda boring with just a two horse race for the hose cup each year.

ChianaWeasley
04-08-2003, 12:34 PM
Well thats not nessacarily true, they have befriended people from other houses. For example they made friends with other houses in Herbology.
Justin FF(cant remember how to spell his last name) and I'm in art, no HP book to look for references. ::shruggs:: And Harry also made friends with Cedric.

I haven't posted here recently, somebody :trout: me.

I agree we need to see more of the other houses. The majority of people in them seem to be a stereotype. Ravenclaw are clever (but seems to be the "respectable house if you're not in Gryffindor"), Hufflepuff are... not, and Slytherin are the bad guys. I'm sure they really have more depth than that. :)

As for my favourite characters:
Harry: like I couldn't say Harry :p
Fred and George: they always crack me up :D
Lee Jordan: I was practically rolling on the floor during his Quiddich commentaries
Lupin: has been one of my favourites since he showed up.
Flitwick: my favourite teacher :D

Well, I suppose it depends then on how you define friends. They certainly KNOW other people, but I would probably more think of them as acquaintances rather than actual friends. Yknow, the kind of people you give a friendly nod to when you see walking by, but otherwise you generally don't have too much to do with them. Well, that's my opinion anyways. :)

Alright, a Lee Jordan fan! He's very good, I like him too. The most entertaining commentators are always the biased ones, hehe! :)

China Weasley, cool name.
I agree with you, but in GoF all the people in the other houses don't like Harry because he has been made a second Hogwarts champion. Probably Hufflepuff are feeling especially mean because its like he has taken away all the glory Cedric had got them.Even Harrys best friend Ron is against him .

ChianaWeasley
04-10-2003, 01:53 PM
And they aren't friends with other people in other houses really...but they do know them. Isn't the whole point of houses is to get to know one another to the point of being like family? Hmm...I just wish she'd delve more into other characters lives.
