View Full Version : Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus (A Xaz-inspired thread)

:D Ok, why do women think/act/talk/move/dress/cry/walk/laugh like they do?
A valid question, Xaz, our adorable little Aussie!
Why do women expect the guy to make the first move? Because we're the weaker sex, obviously, and making the first move is just so painful! ;)
But why do guys like sports so much "more" than girls? Why if they're "supposed to" DON'T they ever make the first move? Why do they make girls think they like them, then never do anything about it? Why do they have to act so macho around their guy friends? Why are they embarrassed to cry in public? Why don't they EVER clean up after themselves?
Sigh. :D I'm waiting... ;)

Well, I think guys are just as scared as girls would be to ask someone out. For some reason we just expect the guys to do it. Personally, I don't buy the 'weaker sex' argument in anything. Women aren't as strong physically, but in no other way are we the 'weaker' sex. If anything we're stronger.:D
I personally like a guy to ask me out, not because of propriety (I asked a guy out to my senior prom), but because it takes a certain amount of guts to do so, which I like.
And if I were to explain how women think and act, it would take all the fun out of everything, so I won't!:D

Silly me, I thought men and women were not only both from Earth, but the same species even. ;) (Seriously, I often wonder how much difficulty and misunderstanding comes from the way we're encouraged to view half of our fellow humans as some sort of weird aliens...)
Meanwhile, for the record... I liked watching baseball as a kid, before I realized it was all a bunch of whiny overpaid guys. (Never was good at most sports myself, but that's because I'm a small specimen to begin with, and always preferred nerdier activities like reading and RPGs.) I did ask out a couple of guys in high school, and got shot down in flames both times (justifiably so in the second case - I only had one class with the guy and didn't realize he already had a girlfriend :o) I dress like I do because I work in an office and can't usually dress like I want. :p (That goes double for the hair - I dyed it a few times in college, but now must make do with wash-out colored hair gels for special non-work occasions.) I walk like I do because I have wide hips and short hobbit legs. I cry occasionally because the world is a sucky place :( though for me personally it isn't a tenth as bad as it was during grade school [insert rant here]. I talk like I do because I've lived in a few different places and have retained the worst aspects of several regional accents. I laugh like a movie villain because it amuses me too... and I think and act like I do because I'm first and foremost a proud geek! :D

Uh-oh, I've done it now! LOL! :D
So many very good questions Colli! They're not going to be easy to answer, but I'll try and at least say what I think!
Hmm, the sport thing. Well, I don't know: I know a few girls who quite like their sport, but I don't know that many who PLAY sport, as such. Personally, I'm a total sports nut, and I don't necessarily mean playing: I like watching pretty much any sport too!
I think it must be a testosterone thing: spirit of competition, desire to be aggressive, assert your dominance in some small way. Yknow, like how shopping is an oestrogen thing! :D
I agree with lithorose about the guys asking girls out thing: we're just as scared as you girls are, certainly! Personally though, I would think I would generally prefer to ask the girl out, even though if she asks me at least I know she likes me! I think I must have too many chivalrous bones in my body or something. No girl has ever asked me out, but if that did happen, I couldn't help but think I'd feel like a bit of a wuss for not asking first! :)
I don't really know why that is... I'm guessing it's a cultural thing. I know that probably isn't the right attitude to have, but I'm being honest, and I think that is probably how I would feel, hypothetically.
Why do we act so macho with other guys? Well, that's a tough one to answer for me: proportionately, I would say that I have more female friends than male friends anyways, for a start. It may surprise you guys to know that a cute, charming guy like me actually doesn't have that many friends, but it's quite true: I'm not generally the most friendly sort of person for some reason. :) Anyways, I digress...
In general terms, I certainly understand that macho feeling, though I'm not very macho: I'm not sure what it is. I suppose it's kind of a respect thing, you want to be respected by your peers, and to do that, you act in a certain way. There's a lot of pressure on EVERYBODY, especially in school, to fit in so that you don't get teased and the like: I think it stems from that, and it's a hard habit to shake.
I think the crying in public is probably connected with that: I don't like to cry in public, but not a lot of stuff tends to make me cry anyways. I don't actively hold back on crying just to prevent myself looking stupid, at least I don't think I do! :)
Hey, I resent that cleaning up crack! ;) I think that I'm pretty tidy, all things considered. Sure, my room is a mess, but that's because I'm lazy, not unclean! :D Untidiness actually bugs me: I like everything to be nice and straight and just right, although I can't always be bothered fixing things that are askew.
Ooh, reminds me of a joke:
Q: How many kind, caring, considerate men does it take to wash the dishes?
A: All two of them!
Any my standard response to this: there's ANOTHER one apart from me?! Who would have thought! :D

LOL.
I'm not really the best person to comment on the differences between men and women, I'm the most un-girly girl ever, but then I've never been one to accept being told how to act or think ;) . I absolutely love sport, I play football (i.e. Association not American/ Aussie rules) for U.W. Cardiff Ladies and like nothing better than playing in a rough match where I can come out of it feeling bruised and battered. And I'll watch most sport: I'm a season ticket holder at Wycombe and like to get stuck in with supporting my team and acting like a bloke on a saturday afternoon. Hmm, maybe I have a freaky hormone levels.
Mind you, I'm sooo emotional. I hate crying in public, but I do it loads because I'm so bloody sensitive. :o I don't mind people seeing me come out of the cinema after watching LoTR with tears streaming down my face, but I hate people seeing me crying over something in RL.
I've never asked a guy out, partly because I've seen my friends try and fail and I don't want to suffer the same rejection. Then again the guys I've wanted to ask out have been people I don't know too well. I guess I use the cultural idea of 'the guy does the asking' just because I'm too much of a wimp to go for it myself.
(Seriously, I often wonder how much difficulty and misunderstanding comes from the way we're encouraged to view half of our fellow humans as some sort of weird aliens...) Moxie, I agree. I've never seen men as anything but the same species, generally more on a par with my level of thinking than the women I know. I went to a secondary school with both boys and girls, but the girls I know who went to a single-sex school seem to have this idea that boys are just on the planet for making babies and handing out money to their other halves. I find it kinda sad when people are taught to view the opposite sex as such different beings, especially when there's such a spectrum of personalities across each gender.

 for Xaz, for not taking this seriously. ;)
About personalities: I find that I would much rather be friends with guys than with girls (even though most of my friends are girls)... but I think that's more because I grew up with two older brothers and all of their guy friends, and so I tend to have similar interests and sense of humor as guys. There's nothing like sitting down and playing video games for a few hours, especially if it's something like The Legend of Zelda.
A few thoughts on crying: I cry so easily, lith! When I'm sad, when I'm angry, when I'm frustrated, when I'm confused, when I laugh for at least 5 seconds straight, I cry. And I can never understand WHY I'm crying.. and it's so terribly annoying. We're working on our English term papers and they're terribly stressful, and my English teacher made me SOOO mad because she told me 2 weeks after I sent all my books back to the library that I needed a certain piece of information that she hadn't told us before that we needed. I nearly screamed... in fact I started laughing psychotically... real crazy person laughing. And then tears started streaming down my face.. but I was laughing. It was by far the creepiest thing I have ever done. I don't know.. no one else seemed to see the humor in it. ;)

Hurrah! I got claps! I actually have trouble taking anything too seriously, so let's hope I never have to!
I did want to try and be honest, though: I mean, those are some interesting questions and they made me think! If you can do that and retain your sense of humour, all well and good! :)
I certainly think that I tend to get along a lot better with girls than guys. I'm pretty much a hopeless romantic and a softie, so I probably have a natural favour towards girls, but that's not the point! :D
I think it's just that I really don't tend to like doing 'macho' things, apart from play sport, though I don't even do that as often as I should. I think I probably find it easier to express myself with gals, because us guys don't talk about all that 'feelings' stuff: we're too tough for that, doncha know? ;)
Yay Seriphus! Get out there and stick up for womankind! Hehe, I know a girl who plays basketball on a team, and they always put the women as guards because the guys don't want to run into them or knock them over or anything, and they cough the ball up! Hehehehehe! Sneaky eh? Doesn't always work, but why not exploit weaknesses where you can, right? :)
Tut tut, girls and crying: they always seem to go hand in hand! Yknow, I'm beginning to think it's not just PMS! ;) :D
Xaz ducks the impending blows doubtlessly coming in his direction after that last comment.
Ahem, on another subject:
Ooh ooh OOH! Legend of Zelda?! Best game EVER! I have the Ocarina of Time one, only I never seem to get much time to play it: also, I get stuck a lot, but that's all part of the fun of it! That game RULES! :D

Can we get any more alike? I LOVE Zelda, especially the Ocarina of Time...for a while I was known to my family as Zelda or Navi. And I call my sister Zora...
Also, about sports: I'm a really sporty girl. I play volleyball year round, and to the point where I am continuing it in college because they gave me a scholarship. For example: I play season, I play club and travel at least 5 hours per weekend, I practice on weekdays, and during the summer my job is to teach little kids how to play, not to mention playing in all-star games and attending camps myself. Also, I love to watch it. The other sports---eh---I'll have to think about. But I am more obsessed with my sport more than any guy I know. Okay, maybe not quite, but more obsessed than most.

Why dont we have any of these in America? ;)
And whats odd Xaz, is I'm the exact opposite. I get along better with guys then I do with other girls, I just do...shrugs shoulders
The only sport I would consider myself good at is Quidditch, I'd be a massive Beater. But of course, it doesnt exsist. ::snaps fingers::
That would figure wouldn't it? ;)
And when I think of the whole men are from mars, women are from venus. Ron and Hermione pop into my head, then astromony, and THEN i think of professor Trelawny.

Hehe, ah, I'm sure they're around! They're prbably the quiet ones, sitting at their desks staring out the window, or lazing about under a tree next to a river somewhere admiring the tranquility of nature. Also, they mightn't all want to admit it: they might be shy! So, they may be a little tricksy to find, but if you look hard enough Chiana, I reckon you could rustle one up! ;) :)
A Beater huh? You must be pretty tough! I think the only position I'd be much good at was seeker, but you never know!
Wow Rivenlas, quite the volleyballer! A scholarship and everything! What do you think of beach volleyball? We tend to see more of that here than your conventional volleyball. Hehe, I was lousy at volleyball in school: you had to have a good leap for one thing, and I don't think I did.
I prefer to PLAY sports like cricket, Aussie rules football: but I don't mind things like table tennis and squash either. As far as watching goes, I'll watch anything! I was even watching the polo the other day! :D
 Hurrah! More Zelda fans! I don't know if I should admit this or not, but I haven't actually finished the game yet, yknow! I still have exciting new things to explore and do, each time I play! I suppose that's one advantage of not getting to play it much: it's all still new to me! Jealous, aincha? :D

I :swoon: for beach volleyball. I've played it very casually because I live like three feet away from a beach, but this summer I'm going to get serious about it because my dad bought me a professional court and all the gear. Yay! Beach volleyball is a great way to get in shape and improve a vertical...jumping in sand, lemme tell ya....
I haven't finished Zelda either. I always get distracted riding Epona or trying on masks.

Ohhhh volleyball!! I love volleyball! My high school didn't have a team, but I played in middle school and my team was district champs! Yeah! I played in college, but mostly just for fun... it's such a fun sport! I miss playing... work and classes suck!
I used to play softball too. Starting pitcher... till I blew out my knee... what a Greek tragedy that was. I actually slipped on a sheet of ice before the game and went down on my knee. When I went to pitch, I threw it out and went down on it again. I was so angry... yelling at my coach and cursing everyone in sight... needless to say the doctors at the hospital gave me a heavy sedative just to shut me up:o I loved it too... and ever since then I've hated ice... ya think!
I think I've always gotten along well with guys. I was never one of those girls that got all "girly" and freaked out around guys. I had some great guy friends in high school. I was always the first one to jump right in and wrestle with them (something I'm sure Xaz would appreciate) or throw a football around with. I didn't have a lot of boyfriends in high school... probably cuz I was best friends with all of them... hmmm. During my first semester in college I spent as much time playing pool and GTA3 on our big screen TV in the lounge with the boys from the second floor as I did shopping and fussing over my hair... guess it just depends on my mood... ;)
Yo, what we're ya'll saying about the Legend of Zelda.. I never could beat that game... spent more time throwing the controller across the room then actually playing ;)

But I'm the lets play shoot'um up zombie games, or play capture the flag in a muddy feild. Not really the "eep! my hairs a mess, and i broke a nail"
Yeah, pool is an awesome game. And bowling, bowlings alot of fun. Exspensive but fun. :D

Ooh! Another secret! As Monty Burns would say, Excellent! :)
So, you girls like a bit of frolicking in the mud and wrestling huh? Well, count me in then! Sounds like fun! Just me and you girls, right? :D
I don't think I ever played capture the flag... love camping though, even though I haven't been in ages! I think the closest thing we played to capture the flag was on Scout camps when we played Spotlight: yknow, when someone guards a tree with a torch and you have to sneak up and touch it without getting spotted? I wasn't very good at it, but it was pretty fun!
Wow, pool and bowling! You're my kind of gals, I gotta say! :) They're both good fun! We have our own pool table, but it's a minaturised version: still plenty of fun though! Haven't been bowling lately, but I always enjoy it... I think the best score I got was when I got 180-ish one time, which I was quite happy with!
Beach volleyball is pretty good: I liked it cos Australia won at the Olympics! Plus, the bikinis aint half bad either! :D
Hey, how come girls always seem to be very close, whereas guys do that whole macho thing? All those slumber parties and make-up and giggling in groups: I don't really get all that. I think it's probably gossip related: women do seem to like a good gossip! :)
I do try and hold out hope that it is because you all like a good pillow fight, but somehow I doubt it. ;) :D
I was playing Zelda the other day and I was just amusing myself chasing around doggies and chickens, hee hee! They're just so gosh darn cute!

You know Xaz... it's funny... I'm a woman, and I wonder why we gossip so much. It's a rule where I work that we're not supposed to gossip on the job (I work in a daycare, it's all women!)... but once the kids are napping and we're taking out lunch breaks... what's the first thing we do?? That's right... we get on our soap boxes and start the all-gossip half-hours. It's unbelieveable.
When I was in high school, and I used to have slumber parties... you know where you don't actually sleep and you stay up all night painting each other toes and doing each others hair wishing you were actually a guy cuz the next thing you know you're crying over your latest ex-boytoy then trying to make your best friend feel better about the break-up by making a Spice Girls video using your brother's video camera and falling on your rear end then driving out to the park at midnight to make a Blair-Witch-esque video till the cops show up to kick you out of said park... and dragging that sore butt into the kitchen in the morning for cake and Doritos, the Breakfast of Champions... what? you girls never did that? I think I'm gonna go crawl in a hole now...:o
I love being a girl! haha:p

All those slumber parties and make-up and giggling in groups: I don't really get all that.
not ALL girls do that Xaz, my slumber parties are usually at a friends house but its intersex. So theres my guy friends and my girlfriends. We watch scary films and shove ourselves full of junk food. Then we play board games that usually are the census type, and theres alot of inside jokes that come from that, believe ME! LOL, we dont paint each others nails though....but we do watch cheesy vampire movies!
Im actually more pron to go to a guy friends house, then a girl's. I dunno, I guess I just have more fun with the guys. ::shrugs::
Now that Xaz knows the rollickin' mud secret, he'll be hosing his back yards and sending out flyers that say;

Only, as far as I know, there isn't any Hooters in Australia, at least by that name, so you couldn't have seen me there. Must've been my evil twin, I think! ;)
Plus, there's also water restrictions here, so I probably wouldn't be allowed to do that watering thing. Curses! Good idea though! :)

Not all of them do... women's beach volleyball they wear them. They actually have restrictions as to the width of the bikini bottoms, yknow: they can't be wider than a certain width. I think it's a fine rule, meself. :D :D
LOL, Stargazr! Sounds like an interesting slumber party: things certainly weren't dull in your part of town, were they?
I actually did a couple of Scouts-related sleepovers myself where we did the movies and junk food thing, yet for some reason the goings-on at a gal slumber party seem to be of immense interest to me! Wow StarGazr, stinkbombs after curfew? That seems a little harsh! I'm guessing there wasn't too much wildlife about as a result of that, hehe! Poor little animals! They don't have a curfew! Or did they? ;)
Heres a guy/girl question... why does it seem like more women write fanfiction then men??
Really? They do? I suppose I haven't read a whole lot, but I find that interesting: I would have thought that guys would write a fair bit too. It could be that women are more dissatisfied with the characters in the various movies/ TV shows/ books.... a lot of them are male-centric, especially in adventurey things such as Harry Potter. Any female characters in those kind of books tend to have to take on stereotypically "male" characteristics to succeed, like aggression, toughness etc. Yknow, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer! :)
And why is most fanfiction centered on romantic aspects of the character's lives?
I think this is probably connected with the "most writers are women" thing. It seems to me that most fan-fictions seem to be written on shows/books where there is little romance in the first place, either for expedience in telling the story or perhaps the male-centric thing again. This only shows one side of a character's personality: it's only natural to speculate about their other motivations and desires. Girls always seem to like a good romance.. guys seem to be more concerned about who shoots/kills who or admiring the various scantily-clad, defenceless women. :D
That wasn't too demeaning for anybody, was it?
I'm just guessing, mind: that's just what I think part of the reason behind it might be. I have no idea about the slash question though, I'm afraid! I'll leave that for someone else to have a go at. :)

Guys are fun...depending on who, sometimes more fun than girls.

I think it has to do with that's what we want to see and we know that our writing it is the only way we're ever gonna see it. I mean, come on... is JK Rowling really ever going to put Snape and Hermione together... Colli.. not a word...

I totally agree with this... I used to write X-Files fanfiction because I was a big Mulder/Scully shipper! For a show that had sooo little romance, fanfiction was the only place where that was ever going to be written... well except for that poor excuse of a series finale where Chris Carter tried to make up for nine years of unresolved tension with... CRAP!! Ugh, don't get me started!
I love speculating how people feel about each other... my imagination goes on overload... but that's only because I'm a hopeless romantic and once I get the idea that two characters should be together into my head... watch out! I'll get it down on paper eventually or my inner-muse will just kill me... not one word Colli! I know what you're thinking... "where's chapter three!?"

Yay, StarGazr agrees with me! I must have made some sense! You're right about the last episode of X-Files, Star: it definitely sucked! I don't think they should have ended the show... I actually quite liked the last few episodes, even if Mulder wasn't around! The whole thing with Scully's baby was just stupid, but when they focused on actual cases instead of that I thought it was pretty good! :)
Of course, even if it was awful I'd still have watched, simply because of Scully ( :swoon: ), but that's hardly the point, is it? :D

I would write about Ron/Hermione, because im a big shipper. But I've never considered writing a slash for Harry/Draco or anything like that. I think women write the slash fanfics more than men...well because they know the romance scene. Can a guy really write a slash hp fanfic? He doesnt have the same perspective of romance as a women does. Im not saying that girls know more about love and all that stuff compared to men. It's just you dont see guys doing it too often. The same with regular romance novels (which by the way is an oxymoron) ;)
all the writers are mostly women.

II. Why dont guys admit they like chick flicks? But they liked Moulin Rouge? They like it till someone(of their sex) labels it a chick flick. Why is that?

Hmm, you seem to have quite the derogatory view of straight people who are attracted to 'that kind of thing', I think! I don't think it's such a bad thing.. it doesn't mean we don't like straight women, yknow! I think it's just that people are attracted to the beauty of the form of the opposite sex, and kind of like the idea of being able to appreciate two at the same time! In my experience, it's not so much the idea of lesbianism as it is the idea of two cute girls being in the same place: yknow, people that aren't lesbians but that other people kind of wish were? ;)
Well, I think that's what I meant: I'm a little crook, so please excuse me if I don't make as much sense as usual.

Well, I'll try to answer, despite that none-too-subtle look in my direction! Hmm...
I. I suppose I sort of agree with Rivenlas on this one... a little bit is okay, but definitely not a lot. The amount of make-up you see models and so on with is way over the top, and probably a turn-off in my opinion. Despite what she says though, I think I probably prefer no make-up: the natural look is nice, I think! :)
II. I'll admit it! I like them, at least in moderation. I don't mind sweet movies, but if they get overly sweet, like soap-opera sweet, I tend to find them more ridiculous than good. I'm not sure about Moulin Rouge, I haven't seen it so I can't answer.
I have a related question: why do people go to see these movies if they only make them cry and feel sad? Women especially seem to like using up a box of tissues or two. As previously stated, I do like them mostly, but I don't actually 'like' seeing them: if it's a good one, it'll make me sad and lonely, and I'd much rather feel happy and cheerful! I think that's a fair question! :)
III. I don't "mind", but I don't particularly like it... I don't even like it when guys do it! I think if people don't mind guys burping though, they shouldn't mind girls doing the same.
How was that, Chiana? Okay? :)

I personally like a movie that shows lots of emotion and can be gut-wrentching! Have you ever seen "Steel Magnolias"? All Sally Field has to do is start screaming "Why?! Why?!" after Julia Roberts dies and I'm gone... get me tissues! Oh and another classic 'chick flick' is "Beaches." I go through a box of tissues with that movie and I am not exaggerating. Right before Barbara Hershey's character dies... and "Wind Beneath my Wings" starts playing... I start crying like a baby! So... why do I even bother watching those movies? Who knows... but about once a year I have to pull them out... them and the tissues... It's all about human emotion and letting down your defences for two hours... that an annoying the crap out of your boyfriend ;) Does that help Xaz?
But here's something for you... I didn't cry during "Titanic." That was too corny even for me... "I'll never look back!" Please! Gag me here and now!... I'm not THAT girly!

I haven't seen either of those movies, actually: I'll keep them in mind if I want annoying though! ;)
Plus, shoot me if you want, but I didn't see Titanic either: the queues or crying women going to see the movie 12 or 13 times despite already knowing what was going to happen put me off. Although going to see Leonardo Di Caprio die was a tempting invitation.... ;)

Hey, I was in love with Leo at the time! I saw it three times in the theater! But even though all my girlfriends cried... I was like... COME ON!! ;)
By the way, Xaz... they really aren't annoying movies... just annoyingly female movies ;) There's a subtle difference

Wow, I didn't expect so many people to give their input!! ::in awe:: NEat, it's like having a mini census in my computer! ;)
Have you ever seen "Steel Magnolias"? All Sally Field has to do is start screaming "Why?! Why?!" after Julia Roberts dies and I'm gone... get me tissues!
I know EXACTLY what you mean, that part of the film is so sad, it gets me every time! But the rest of the movie is pretty funny, well...except her death of course.
I didn't cry during "Titanic." That was too corny even for me... "I'll never look back!" Please! Gag me here and now!... I'm not THAT girly!
I never thought Titanic was sad, cheesy really, my sister Din and her friend Tara were with us the first time I saw it in the theatre. They both bawled when the ship sank and people died, and when Leo dies they completely lost it! I laughed when that guy hit the propeller, and when another guy hits the railing and does spins through the air. :o Ok maybe I'm alittle insensitive...but that movie was just plain horrible!
I dont know why people like to watch movies that make them cry, if I think I'm going to lose it one part I fast forward through it.But not a whole lot of movies make me cry...::tries to think of some::
III. Do guys really mind when girls burp?
Okay, just a quick explanation for the oddity and randomness for this particular question...In the car yesturday I was having a vanilla soda, and...well burped...quite alot. My mom just looked at me and rolled her eyes saying "Thats charming. What boy wouldn't want to date you? No wonder none of the guys at school wanna date you..." or something close to that. Well I simply informed her that we have burping contests me and my guy friends. And it didn't ever seem to bother them at all ::shruggs:: Okay, just thought I should explain that one :D

I can't watch soap operas. They make me feel depressed because I can't stand their stupidity. *watch me get addicted to them, like, tomorrow.* Also, I don't cry at movies. I have cried at two in my life, and one was Homeward Bound when I was young and the other...well, I had just gotten hurt so badly I couldn't sleep so I'm not sure if it was really due to seeing Nick Cage trying to give a bunny to his daughter or just being really tired of everything.
I thought Titanic was sad the first time, but of course I didn't cry. When Jack died, my cousins stood up and applauded.

I looooove Soap Operas! They're my daily way of escapism. I love sitting back and watching three hours of mindless dialogue. Have you ever watched "Port Charles" on ABC? :swoon: for the Vampire Caleb. Oh my goodness is that man HOTT!!! I try to cut back on the soap operas, they really are addicting. Alot like romance novels (which is an oxymoron ;) ) where their really trashy "house wives porn" is what I call um. but once you start reading one you cant put it down. It must fall under the category of people are into it because it human nature. Like the whole double girl discussion.

Is it the supernatural where it's all spooky and stuff? Or is it the kind where they try to be all supernatural and it doesn't work at all and just turns out hilarious. Either way, sounds more interesting than most soaps I've seen. ;)

My neighbors aren't that interesting....mostly oldr retired couples and younger couples with little kids, nothing like an axe murderer or a crazy cat lady....though a crazy cat lady would be really cool.;)
Ok...heres something to share, our band for the spring concert is playing Lord of The Rings, tonight actually. And some of the drumline has these pipes that make wraith screechs and their wearing cloaks. The one boy whose younger then me was wearing a black one, and I thought...
"That looks like a hogwarts robe! Thats really hot actually..."
and is it me or i it weird to really like the whole hogwarts thing? Im sorrry but a guy in billowing black robes.....come on thats really :swoon: worthy!

It's not weird at all Chiana. I realised the other day that when I graduate next year I get to wear robes, just like Hogwarts. :p
Hehehehe, good ol' Neighbours! That had me sucked in for a while, but I got sick of it in the end. I think it was Felicity (aka Holly Vallance) who really beat it out of me: I really hated that character!
One of Australia's finest exports. ;) Aye, I hated Felicity too, but she's gone now. :)
My mum's a Saints 'fan', not that she actually has any interest in football, but pretty much everyone I know wants them to win.
I could never get into Buffy. I sometimes watch the beginning for the theme tune, but can't get interested in the actual programme itself.

Gah, what a great thread I've missed while I've been away!!! (And I'm soooo sad that I really don't have time to answer this all fully now...) :(
Chiana said at some point: Can a guy really write a slash hp fanfic
Did you forget the gay guys? I've read few great romance fics by male authors who happen to be gays ;)
And talking about soaps - anyone likes Queer as Folk? :swoon:

Well....you guys all know what I think about slash fan fiction. (see crazy upset thread started by yours truly:o )
But about the burping thing....well, boy can I BELCH! Its something I've just always done, and maybe I'm childish, but I think its hilarious. My best friend (a guy) is always continually jealous of how well I can belch. Buahahahaha. Its quite amusing.:D
But sports....well I always hated sports. Except for horsebackriding. I even got pretty good at that, after doing it for more than ten years. But I ended up selling my horse....so....yeah. And then recently I joined a LARP (Live Action Role-playing) group, which is really just a full contact sport in which we have characters, dress in medieval/fantasty garb, and beat each other up with foam and PVC pipe weapons. Its so much fun! :D I even get hurt too, which is great. Not too mention the guys in our chapter are lovely. ;)
Though I haven't been seriously injured. In fact, it was much more dangerous when I rode horses. I've been thrown into a fence, flung through the air, and stepped on multiple times. The worst was when my thousand pound horse fell on me, but that's another story. Amazingly, I didn't even break any bones, just got badly bruised, and recieved a nice deep hoofprint in my leg.
And yet I still love horsies. But we all knew I was crazy.
Chiana~ Wow, you really don't like America, do ya? ;) There are places much worse off than we are! Seriously, though.....a place is only as boring as you make it. :)
But back to the point of this thread.....I consider myself to be a human soul first, but a female much later. I believe that one's soul has no gender, since gender is such a societal-based-on-a-physical thing. People in general are SO defined by their genders, that its just......GAH! Stifling, in a way.
er....uh....sorry. I know you didn't mean for this to be serious, Colli, so I'll shut up. But I get really worked up about gender issues for some reason. Blah.

I hate being told what I can and can't do because of my gender, I'll do what I like because I'm me, who just happens to be a girl. I get relly worked up about gender issues too, because they've been a real problem for me in the earlier years of my life.
I like the idea of a soul having no gender, I'd never thought about it like that before.
Elfëa, I like Queer As Folk, but it's too good to be called a soap. ;) :p

Your mum rules, Seriphus! :D So do all those people you know going for Southampton! I realise that a day or two ago Arsenal pasted us 6-1, but that's all part of our plan: we're setting them up with false confidence before we run all over them in a glorious victory. You'll see! ;) :)

Just have to say that I agree with Seriphus and swifty! :D
I'm myself a soul, then a woman and then come sexuality... :p Gender and sexuality, in my opinion aren't related ;) Not in a sense that you should (as society often still demands :() be interested only of the opposite gender. Love and relationships shouldn't be based on the issues of gender, but "soul" and thoughts - on the basis of being a living person. Gender doesn't rule who you love. :)
(sorry if I'm being harsh against some people's beliefs, but remember - opposite views are harsh on me. ;))

swiftsnowmane: A female acquaintance from my uni used to be the #2 ranked jouster in our region of the SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism), so if you still have a horse you might be able to combine two of your interests :)
I used to LARP now and then myself, but due to general lack of competence with the PVC/duct tape sword mostly stuck with playing recorders while wearing the closest stuff to medieval garb I could scrounge at the time. spouse and I both still have our PVC/duct tape swords though (;

I agree with both of you! People at my school (both sexes) expect certain things from you, because your a girl. One in particular, me and my friend have burping contests between lessons, and he cant stand that we do it. He has the air of "women should not speak unless spoken to. Women should be seen and not heard". Gah! If I had a pickle for every time someone made comments to me like that, or expressed their "expectations of the same /oppoiste sex" when it comes to socially exceptable behavior...Id have alot of pickles! :D ;) :p
At lunch the other day, Din(my sis) and a few friends from track were discussing the perfect man. And if there was one, my one friend stated "My luck he'd be gay". Well....I thought that was a wonderful concept.
If there was such a thing as a perfect man or woman and they had different perspectives on love. There, somewhere out on the globe, is the perfect man. Every woman wants the perfect man, and vise versa, but I find it adorable and wonderful if the person to spend the rest of their life with this perfect man/woman...well was of the same sex. I think its a keen idea, that or I'm just odd. Remember, I am the kind of person that the Puritan village would stone because of my beliefs..or comments :p  :D
Personally I'd find someone who was perfect kind of annoying...okay ::sighs about to make a confession:: I'd find them VERY annoying. :p
lithorose
05-10-2003, 04:47 PM
Well, it's a good thing no one's perfect then, isn't it? Actually, if there were a perfect person, you might find you liked them a lot. Perfect people don't make for good story characters, but the people I've known nearest 'perfection' (however you would define that) are pretty cool and interesting.

At lunch the other day, Din(my sis) and a few friends from track were discussing the perfect man. And if there was one, my one friend stated "My luck he'd be gay". But surely by definition the 'perfect man' for a straight woman would be straight himself. Otherwise he wouldn't be perfect for her. :) ;)
I've never really understood the concept of having an idea of a perfect man (or woman) myself. Without trying to sound all self-righteous, the guys I've liked, I've liked because of their personality and if I find their personality attractive then I tend to find them physically attractive. I don't really have a 'taste' in men (i.e. not in the sense of he must be tall, dark and handsome, smart, kind and gentle...) and I can't do what my friends do and walk down the street going 'he's fit', 'he's fit', 'he's not'...etc. I think someone's 'fit' once I get to know them or at least get an idea of what they're like.
And I totally agree with you Chiana. I'd find a 'perfect' man annoying. I prefer someone with flaws and vunerability (that's why I like Snape :p ). Then again I guess I could say that for me someone should be flawed in order to be my perfect man. ( got my philosophy exams coming up so can't stop arguing 'deep and meaningful' questions. )
But anyway, if someone was perfect in the sense of great-looking, could-do-no-wrong, kind-and-loving personality... I would find that annoying. :barf: ;)

You make a very good point Serphy :)
And Im right with you, I go for the "geekier" guys as some call them. I really go for personality. We are few of those who are tough to please, theres always "the list" . I know it sounds stupid but I have a big list of characteristics I'd like in an oppisite. Please dont tell me I'm the only one who does that :o :p ;)
Seriphus
05-13-2003, 11:06 AM
It's not at all stupid to have a list of characteristics you'd like an opposite to have, after all it's important that you like this person. There are characteristics I'd like a guy to have (geeky being one of them ;) ), but not all the guys I've liked have fitted these characteristics, and some have taken me completely by surprise because I could never have seen myself going for that type of person.
IMO it's only stupid when people have a very definite list and won't look at anyone who doesn't fill all the criteria, because they'll be very lucky to find even one person that fits. Plus they'll miss out on a whole load of others who may not be 'perfect', but may be right all the same. :) I think there's a difference between knowing what you'd like in a partner and in having a template of the 'perfect partner'. If you take my meaning. :p

I don't really have an idea of what a perfect guy should be either...I mean, I like all sorts of guys...the smart ones, the jocks, etc. However, I don't date guys from my town...they all have known me since kindergarten and still think of me as the same, shy, ugly little girl they knew. C'mon, people can change! I hate guys (or people in general) that can't realize someone has changed or refuses to see it because of an idea. RANT OVER.
Anyway, the guy has to have an open mind and some sort of a sense of humor...and have faults. Guys aren't any fun if they're perfect, I agree.

My mom has a friend at work who is in search of the perfect man. She goes online to the dating sites and goes on dates with all these men. The one imparticular seemed to be the one for her. But she dumps them all, the only thing shes going to be interested in marrying is and I qoute ;
"A greek god."
She'll be looking for the rest of her life, you can count on that.
I once read a book called 'Bad Boys' by olivia goldsmith, and its about a journalist who tries to create the perfect-irresistable bad boy. What every women wants, she decides to turn her best friend into an experiment. He changes his look, from his clothes to his hair and shoes. And even makes him carry around a motorcycle helmet to fake that he has a bike. He even lies to get girls. It goes to his head and he starts dating every girl she knows. Well the ending is good, and it has a good point.
If thats what a guy has to do in order to be perfect...I dont want a perfect guy.

a) I actually live within 30 minutes of this guy
b) Everyone under the sun wants me to date him (my parents adore him... that hurdle is already crossed :p)
c) If I have a certain "type" of person, he's it and
d) I don't talk to him on the Internet ;)
Smart, SOOOO sweet, funny, and a math geek. And he's only here for the summer, which is ok because I'm leaving after the summer's over, too. (I'm actually going to college with his sister in the fall, how weird is that?)

Colli, you could try asking this guy if he likes you without telling him that you like him yourself, if you take my meaning. If you tell him you get vibes that he likes you and ask him if that's the case then you're not necessarily saying you like him, just testing the water, so to speak. So that if he answers 'no' you can say something along the lines of 'OK, sorry. I just wanted to make sure so you didn't think I was leading you on'; and if he answers 'yes' then you can go for the big smoochy kiss. ;)

Hmm, straightforward worked for me in college, though it got me shot down in flames (twice) in high school. To be quite honest, I'm not much good at anything else but (though I've learned in my old age to temper my bluntness with a bit of diplomacy now and then), so maybe my advice isn't the best to listen to, but remember this secret... boys aren't some weird alien, but the same species as girls. A geek-boy in particular (just the sort I've always preferred, and I can testify that they tend to grow up into wonderful geek-men :)) is unlikely to buy into the ideas that boys can't talk about their feelings, or girls can't make the first move, and can probably be talked to and reasoned with, thus allowing you each to find out how the other feels without all the go-betweens.

I had the strangest dream last night. It started out at my school and it was all decked out for this big celebration of some sort. I mean set up for a wedding big. And me and my friends show up, in jeans and t-shirts and it turns out to be prom. It's set up so anyone can come, there are tons of things to do there. Almost like a fair, including karaoke, bars, and I cant remember what all else. But we get there, and my friends are suddenly dressed up, and here I am in casual. And then it turns out we have tickets already, Im informed that I'm going stag. So its almost sun set, and my one friend Eric comes up and asks me "Want to go to prom together?" (mind you this is right outside of the door @ prom night) I say no that I'd rather just be on my own. Well we go in and it turns out there are about ten different floors.
*Reminded me of the tents in GoF*
Anyway he keeps bugging to go with him, and so I give in. And suddenly IM in a prom dress, it was an odd dream.
But mind you it then changed into a space dream, we're all in a space ship and we go to different planets. It was one of those trippy double cheese burger induced dreams....
Dreams are hard to decipher what do you think it meant?

Honestly though, were you worried about prom?

no...i'm not even going to prom...::scratches her head::
But I like the ballerina idea, I could never dance, heck I try hard to stay on two feet while walking;)

I didn't go to my high school prom either, Chiana... as previously noted, I just couldn't get a date with any of the few guys at my HS worth going out with (and I'm not being a snob here, my HS was filled with guys who were just eeeeewwww :p) and the prom was billed as couples only. (I supposed I could have split the cost of a pair of tickets with someone else who couldn't find a date, but... where I grew up, prom is a huge extravaganza where everyone tries to rent the biggest limo, etc. and I didn't want to be a part of that, with or without a date.)
On another topic, spouse is again suffering from severe Morpheus-envy :) and would like to know if his shades-without-sides can be found anywhere outside a movie set, preferably with prescription lenses. For my part, I don't actually want Trinity's attire but would like to be able to get away with wearing that sort of thing without looking completely ridiculous... obviously spouse is more likely to get his Matrix-related wish. :o

Wow, tell your spouse I'd love to meet him. Keep ahold of that one Moxie ;)
I really have no clue, other than trying ebay as a start :)
I would love to wear some of the clothes from both matrix films...but its hard to find good durable vinyl anymore...

Will these (http://www.matrix2sunglasses.com/mat1sun.html) do? I don't see anything about prescription lenses...

I wouldn't like sunglasses like that... I'd be worried about them falling off my head all the time! :)

Notice how many different kinds of shades there were in that movie? It's like they're thinking: "Better give them a variety, that way one will be sure to become the hot pair this year!":p I don't wear shades but Niobe's were kinda cool.
And to take the thread further off topic, I don't really like Trinity's outfits. Tooooo shiny. I think they would have done better to dress her in half vinyl, half something else. But it has an interesting effect in the movie of looking almost computer-generated.:D

I wonder how he kept them on....?
Good equilibrium?;)

:) There's a nose clip on them.
I didn't like Trinity's rubber suit, either, lith. But I did like the clothes from the Matrix.

I liked Neo's outfits in the original. :swoon: And I liked the outfits they wore on the Nebuchadnezzar. And in the new movie, I like the outfits worn by Jada Pinkett-Smith and that woman who played Link's wife. And while I don't like them in general, I liked the blue (snakeskin?) boots the twins wore.:D
I noticed on they are selling all the shades for decent amounts of money. A friend of my cousin bought a pair like Neo's after the first movie came out and it was like $200!!! Gag me if I ever spend that much on accessories (or any article of clothing, for that matter!) Not that I even wear sunglasses...

I didnt really like Jada's outfit, it was very Hey! Im in the matrix right now! I did like her hair though, and her character was great! Just didn't care too much for the outfit. I loved all the clothes in the dance hall, when it gets kinda...hot :o

spouse has announced that he has in fact ordered a pair of those Morpheus shades; they ain't exactly cheap, but he's been wanting those since the first film came out so he's about as picky about the price as we are about the price of Book 5. We'll let you all know how the shades look in RL (not to mention how well they stay on spouse's nose ;))

:D No problem, moxie!
So the guy I was talking about, right? His sister is going to the same uni I am... he wants to know if I'll room with her!
This is getting weird :p :)

Maybe he likes you...and he's finding little ways to get to know you better. THAT or his sister notices something is up, and suggested it, to get you to closer. THAT or its a coincidence...but I like the other ideas better...:D
