UpintheSky had posted a comment about a Mary-Sue over in the guidelines, and it got me thinking that everyone might not know about the wonder that is Mary-Sue. Where she came from, where's she's been, and where she's going... with her brother Harry-Stu taging along.
One of the original Mary-Sue's in the mainstream was 'Star Trek' creator Gene Roddenberry's Wesley Crusher in 'Star Trek: TNG' but get this... Mary-Sue can be traced back over 150 years (http://www.merrycoz.org/papers/MARYSUE.HTM)! I don't have the energy to type all the highlights of that essay, so read on your own time ;)
I read the following essay by "Dr. Merlin" about three months ago. This is The Rant That Started It All (http://missy.reimer.com/library/guide.html). Written back in 1996, Dr. Merlin discusses everything from spelling and grammar to why Mary Sue should just die!
I hope everyone enjoys this.. I have some Mary Sue stories... but I'm too tired to share right now. Perhaps if this thread takes off, we can have talks about it ;)
OK, I know I am the Mod to this forum... but I'm still a newbie to all of this. If any of this is totally inappropriate (I tried to look through some stuff and it looks clean) or way out of place... take it off and trout away.

Gah. You lazy mod!:trout: :D

Mary Sue confession:
The first fanfiction I ever wrote was more or less a Mary-Sue. But it wasn't even MS, it was me, myself and I. It was for Eerie, Indiana (anyone remember that show?). And it would've involved Leprechauns if I'd have ever finished it. And no, you can't see it!:p

I used to watch that :D

I dont think I've ever written a Mary-Sue... Well I hope not, haven't ever really introduced a character...

I read the guidlines on Mary Sues on writers university, so I avoid all points at all times :p

No no.. I've got the ultimate Mary Sue... I put myself into an X-File... and I had special mind reading powers... and was being chased by the "shadow government." So, in order to protect me I had to become an FBI Agent, and was Mulder and Scully's new partner! Well, it wasn't me, like she had her own name and stuff... but it was close enough.
Isn't Dr. Merlin hilarious? I mean, she makes some good points though. Especially about spelling, grammar and having a Beta. I had a great editor for my X-Files stories, now Colli works on my HP stories! I actually finished my Hermione/Snape piece... but it's too long to post here. I don't know if I'm allowed to link to FF.net... am I? (This coming from a Mod!)

OK, well I'll post it, what I have of it anyway! ;)

Hello again!

I'm back:) I too have written a couple of pretty horrid Mary Sue stories. One was about me, the 8th Goonie (stop laughing!). Then it was me, the only girl (beautiful of course) on the island in Lord of the Flies. Then I wrote a Lord of the Rings story. Yep, that beautiful elf that Legolas and Haldir fell in love with -- me.

*groans* Yes, I have written my share. :o

Sparklypoo House!

I never knew there was a name for such a phenomenon.

I'm guilty of injecting myself into some of my favorite stories. :o I never wrote them down, though. I somehow knew it was rather pathetic. I just let the stories stay in my head.

But I love what you've done with your hair!;):swoon:

Hm, the quiz isn't working for me. I guess I'll try again later.

Gee, you think it suits me? I'm not sure, but if you say so! ;)

The link actually didn't work for me either, I had to go to the page and change the address a bit before I finally found the quiz. If you cut the link back to the /quizzes/ bit you should be able to find it. :)
