View Full Version : Oldbies Nostalgia!

Fleurdelacour

Right, I'm in a terrible nostalgia mood, I blame... The fact I'm leaving school. Been getting very nostalgic with friends, so I thought, seeming as some of us have been around a few years, we can get nostalgic!

Remembering things like the first Yule Ball, Xaz and tigrrrl's decetive agency with thing with Watson!

And how we looked forward to the book coming out on 2001... Oh we have waited too long for this book...

And where have some of the oldbies gone?! Like Sars (aka Black Horntail, Laura) and others. They've just vanished... poof!

Mmm nostalgia.... :D

Cedric

Yeah... Thems were the days...

Or the time when me and you would post back and forth in the quidditch patch.

And that's not all that's gone now, there's so many people who use to be here and now aren't, I can't even remember them all. Which is kinda sad.

Simple times... Been a good run though.

Been a good run? It's still going strong my friend

Hahaha yeah we were all like woohoo it's going to be out this summer... TWO YEARS LATER

Some of the threads we had were great! We had about a dozen different theories about book 5, most of them are so deeply ingrained in me that I will be surprised if they don't come true.

wow this september it'll be three years since i've known all you oldbies! how cool

Oh, yeah, I was just trying to sound nostalgic.

Fleur, you should know by now not to take me seriously ;)

I've been around the MI (in its many incarnations) for about 3 years. How many incarnations has it been?

It was back before GoF came out, and we were all in that wonderful state of anticipation. We were at muggleinformer.com The color was green. We had our own front page then and the first news was starting to trickle in about the movies. Remember everyone being so upset because Rosie O'Donnell was going to play Mrs. Weasley?

And Jamie Bell was supposedly going to play Harry. And when the casting was announced for Draco, the picture they published was of Tom Felton in Anna and the King and nobody could picture him as Malfoy.

Fleur

lol I remember that! How funny.

I'm so glad Jamie Bell didn't get the part! Not that DanielIhavenoexpression boy is much better. Hmm.

I could never forget that! Quidditch Practice  I don't think there was ever actually a match!

Three Years? woah... we've literally grown up here...

I remember when you got married Kristin :D

I want Jamie Bell for Cedric now! :p

Oh I remember the Rosie O'Donnell stuff! All I knew she was some American chat-show host!

Fleur

Quidditch was just too complicated! There used to be a whole lot more house rivalry back then too. People would fight over newcomers for their house!

Hehehe, the good old detective agency... it went really well the first time I remember, but when I brought it back after the forums moved it didn't go so well, alas! But I had a lot of fun doing it, and Watson made quite a name for himself, LOL.

I remember the Yule Ball: think I only went to one, though I may have gone to another. Twas all good fun! :)

You should get your detective agency up and running again! These newbies won't know what will have hit them!

People would fight over newcomers for their house!

A Hufflepuff would say THAT! :p

LOL, be careful what you wish for... I could, but it wouldn't be any fun unless people were going to participate and add to it. Judging from the Saga, that isn't necessarily likely to happen, LOL. :)

Still, perhaps.....

Oh yes, Xaz, please! I had soooo much fun with that! I was an angel and... and... Oh dear, I don't think I can do the angel bit any more. I think I lost my halo... Oh yes, and me and GoldenPhoenix argued over who was the better angel... Oh and Cedric died in the end, I beleive! How terrible! Oh things were all so dramatic!

Oh, yes, the Saga, that poor, poor old story! Do you remember the very FIRST Saga? FleurD, Ced, you two participated! Wow, oh, that was all the way back in 2000... when I was still an uncertain young teenage NEWBIE! OK... I'm still a teenager, but I'm much more certain. Who started that, by the way? Was it Rosie? I think it was... Oh... *sniff.*

:( :( :(

I feel like BAWLING! Today was a day of remembering old friends... goodness, I had totally different friends when I first started here, now I barely talk to them... God, yearbook signing like crazy today. I actually felt POPULAR! But it was so sad... last day of school and all... Oh....

Heh, yeah, all the old guys. Dr. Evil! Someone e-mail the good doctor... that's a name that comes to mind from long long ago... who else was in the first saga? Oh goodness... I'm sorry for the stuttering and all... gosh... I was still in Brussles then... Now it's been a year in Egypt. Wow, has it really been three whole years? Ouch. It must be, I remember three Yule Balls. Oh gosh, the first one I was so excited about. FleurD, was it your idea? Sorry if I'm not giving credit where it's due, but... Oh, but I was in LONDON and could NOT get to an Internet cafe.... The second year I was baking cookies at a friend's house... and this last one, I had my dream date Oz. lol.

I'm sorry for gushing, all, but I'm leaving for the States tomorrow and in case you can't tell, am VERY nostalgic. Yah, I'm actually comming back to Egypt this time, but...

Gosh, I've known you longer than I've known some of my closest friends here and that kinda creeps me out! lol!

Just today I was on the Internet with nothing to do and decided to check out the good old MI. As the site was loading I was tired and thought about how tedious checking the boards had become to me. Quite routine, actually... scan through, anything interesting, if not, go somewhere else, if so, scan through the thread, maybe post something, maybe not.... And I felt... I don't know, obligated to myself to do it... Like a piece of my past. But friends never get old. It's great to know you guys are still here, through this inconstant changing world.... Being a Third Culture Kid is hard... Moving around a lot, changing schools... And yet, I feel I always have a home here...

Sorry for getting sappy.

*cough* Excuse me, I'll just go now.....

***PS: Xaz: I luuuurve your avatar! LoZ is like my favorite RPG on Nintendo... all of them are!

Ravenclaw! You and your Belgian pals, and they sort of took over! lol that was so funny! :D

Oh gosh, the first one I was so excited about. FleurD, was it your idea?

Aye, twas me idea! And I remember everyone insisted that Ced and I always flirted, when we didnt! At thirteen years old we were innocent! :p

NOW WE (Fleur, Ravenclaw, and Ced, and where ever Sars got too...) SIXTEEN!

So weird....!

Dr Evil! The orginal photo taking mod (he did take photo right... It isn't jusy my imagination...)

LOL, be careful what you wish for... I could, but it wouldn't be any fun unless people were going to participate and add to it. Judging from the Saga, that isn't necessarily likely to happen, LOL.

*puts on native accent* Ah, go on! Ah go on! Go on go on go on! It'd be a trifle! *ends Irish accent.*

We have a saga?! I'm asleep most of the time aren't I!?

Well he was Head Boy though wasn't he?

I don't have time right now, but stay tuned in the next few days.. just remember, you asked for it! ;)

Aww, Ravenclaw, you WERE in a reminiscent mood! The good ol' days eh? We never had yearbooks at my high school.. on the last day of high school, everybody just signed everybody else's shirts, hehe!
Please do pop back and visit more often! You're a great part of the community, and you always have something interesting to say! Umm, lol, that sounded very much like sucking up, but I do enjoy seeing you around. :)

Hiya Fleur, Ced! I'm still alive and working on The Book. Scheduled to come out June 2004. In hardback, yet. Now all I have to do is finish it! ;)

I remember Hufflepuff's waterslide, we all had a party there once - I seem to recall roasting marshmallows? Or am I dreaming?

Anyway, lovely to see you all - Kristin, Amberion, MAJOR hugs!

I actually reread your books about a month ago. I'm dying to know what happens to Lanen (and kind of dreading what might be in store for Shikrar).

Well, I know that you're busy ... but you MUST join in some discussion after Order of the Phoenix comes out. Just like after GoF, when there was so much new stuff to analyze and talk about, and yours was one of the most interesting voices. :)

Nostalgia indeed... Even I, who has been on MI for bit more than 6 months, feel it... how different it must be to those who have been here for longer!

Yeah... Time really flies...

Anyway... I don't mean to be offensive to anyone or anything, but to those who have been here since this place started: has the behavior of new people remained pretty much the same, or have attitudes and posting habits changed over time? I don't really remember how I acted when I first came here, so I can't be one to say :D

Well, I know I don't post as much as I used to, back in 2000, I got 1000 posts in three months!

There was a time, last year I think, when the forums changed from PG to G pretty much everyone's disgut (we couldnt even talk about slash for goodness sake...) a lot of us got banned, Laura was banned forever, but as aloud back when we moved here (although, she's still gone....) I was banned for a few days.

But everything is ok now... I think...

Be glad that you're not an oldbie. Being an oldbie makes me sad sometimes because we've lost all our history. :( Actually, we've had to start over from scratch twice!

So we can't go back and look at the posts where we all met, relive the days of casting rumors for SS/PS or even rumors that there would be no Polyjuice Potion in the CoS movie. We can't look at how our interpretations of GoF (which had its own forum in July 2000) changed from when it first came out to three years later. And our poor qleap couldn't be Weasley'sWizardWheezes anymore.

That's stuff that I miss ... and, yes, it does mean I'm a geek. :D

But, I'm glad that most of the people are still here. (Although I really miss Dr. Evil, horsinaround and others.) And I'm glad that this community has made me want to stick around for 3 years! (Something no other site has come close to doing!) :)

I hear ya Moxie. I must have had at least 2 grand at the first MI, probably more, then another grand or so at the second one. After all those moves I really started realizing that if anyone ever tells me I have a lot post count, that I can tell them they haven't lived through two moves.

There's the good and bad of being a Vet. There's the great memories of days long past, but then again, it's kinda sad being one of the longest posters here.

Is there any way of making a poll of how many people we still have that were part of the original MI? That'd be cool...

I agree with everything Kristin said :)

one thing about this community, everyone really is so nice (English teachers told me never to use the word, nice...) but really, everyone is. On another board I kinda visit, everyone is awfully !!!!!y, people have cliques and dont post in certain people's threads, I was a victim of it, and I only lurk now for Will Young news (I've actually gone off him a bit...)

No other board is as welcoming, has such a wide varity of people from all over the world, it's lovely! :)

Going all sentimental and fluffy now! I'll sssh :o

Yeah, that would be quite cool Ced :)

Kristin! Moxie! qleap! Lanen hugs them tight

OK, I know, I'm not REALLY there hugging you - but after three years of posting and two ponypocalypses (is that the correct plural for our neologism?), I surely wish I could be. You know the bit in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader where Lucy sees a mermaid 'shepherdess', their eyes meet for an instant, and in that moment they realise that they are lifelong friends? Well, it took rather longer here, but I do feel that way about some of the folks I've met here.

And it wasn't just the old MI losing all those mad threads that I loved, but the Pony history disappearing. I took part in a completely surreal, gloriously creative thread for about a year, with Rosie Gamgee and a few others, and Daddy Proudfoot (whom I never saw post on any other threads) - called something like On the Corner of Williams and (some other street) - Daddy Proudfoot had the most wonderful imagination and evoked such a delightful response. I have always wondered who he was...

And losing my old Corner! :( the new one is great fun, but not so popular as the old. Since continuitygirl left us (sniff) there's hardly ANYONE around who wants to talk about sparkly shoes! ;)

And I haven't been able to resist putting in my two cents' worth in the OotP discussion, Kristin!

Hugs all round, my dears - catch you later!

Amb :hug:s Lanen

Well for those enquiring minds we have 3 posters who are over 1000 posts this time around

I am quite surprised about the number who have remained loyal from the good old green days

If I see the Doc in toronto in december then I will ask him to put in an appearance now and then

He is just as nice a person in real life as he was on the boards

I remember continuitygirl. I've actually thought of that from time to time and I've thought about talking about sparkly shoes ... but I just don't think it would work. Things can never really be recreated. Case in point: my attempts to have Auror Undies catch on again. The first time around it was really funny and just came about naturally (Doc and I were the instigators, I remember). But we can never recapture that whole thing. It can't be like it was.

But we can always create new fun and new memories. :)

BTW -- Anybody notice wilecoyote (one of our "newer" members)? Well, I remember wilecoyote from long ago. And he has found his way back to us (and had to reregister). I think that's really cool! :D

At the moment, I'm feeling a bit nostalgic for Waffliciousisity (or whatever it was).

When I first registered at MI and Imladris, I didn't like all the "ohhh good old times" and "ohhh us oldbies" threads and chat discussions... I mean, I was there in chat and felt bad because I was a newbie and newbies looked like the worst thing that ever happened to the boards... I even considered myself a newbie for longer than a year :o :o

But the way this thread is, it doesn't sound any bad toward newbies so I like it :) I just realized that people do need to remember things especially since so much (and so many) got lost.

And I've just realized I won't be online on the 27th July for my 3 years anniversary

Well I'll try my best to find an internet cafe sometimes around that date, wherever I'll be ;) (looong story...)

I really don't set store by newbies vs. oldbies. And, at least here at the MI, I don't think it's at all difficult to be welcomed into the group! :)

As for this nostalgia, it's just about remembering our history. I certainly don't look down on anyone who wasn't there.

I've been around here and CoE for almost three years. But even though I might be an "oldbie" I feel much less a part of CoE than I used to (because it's gotten so big).

I love the Muggle Informer!
I love newbies (and oldbies)!

Colli
07-14-2003, 09:32 PM
*sniff* I remember the MI as a part of Imladris and as its own site, and then part of the CoE and as its own site... and I remember a lot of old posters and old threads and good times. :D Great times!

That being said, I'm a bit of a.. midbie? I was part of the group that joined in January 2002 with the coming of Fellowship of the Ring. :D

Lanen

qleap my dear -

I quite agree, I always thought the 'newbies' stuff was silly. The only reason any of us are oldbies is because at one time we were newbies. There are so many quality folk here, newcomers and oldtimers! I've never felt the need to make distinctions just for the sake of it.

But, as this is the nostalgia thread, you can't help feeling a bit closer to folks who have been through things with you - surviving various trolls at old Imladris, years of Tim Benzedrine :notworthy: (Tim, Tim, come back, come back!) and Sirandilas and mik and Calastir and bombadil - all the old cheerful, creative idiots :D - and all the fun we have known that our newer colleagues, alas, were not a part of, and since we've had those meltdowns they can't even have the fun of diving the void to find out. :( So we are the carriers of that history. Trivial history, to be sure!, but our shared history none the less.

I'm with you absolutely, Kristin  . You can never cross the same river twice, as they say, and I wouldn't want to try. I think the MI is going strong with all our lovely new folks, leavened by those of us who have been around a little longer (we're only talking 3 years, after all!!) - on to new victories! :D

Cedric

The problem with trying to bring back something that once was something huge is that nothing is ever more funny the second time around. If a comedian came out saying the same joke over and over again, we'd get bored.

It was funny the first time because it was new. So we just have to keep coming up with new things, not try and relive those old times.

Oh, and in case anyone cared, I've been gone the last few days because my internet hit the wall....

Happy anniversary to me.....

Three years ago today, I registered on a little, green site known as the Muggle Informer (.com in those days). ... Little did I know how significant that was.

I've been a member of several online discussion sites. But I've always eventually drifted away after a couple months or a couple weeks. MI/CoE is the only place where I've wanted to stay. :) I always want to come back.

And I know there are other Harry Potter fan sites out there that are bigger or fancier. But I am fiercely loyal to my beloved MI. No other site could have the something special that this place has.

Not to sound pathetic or anything (because I do have a real-world life) ... but this place has been very important and very special to me.

:notworthy   To all of you who make this place what it is!

Cool Kristin, grats to ya ;)

How do you remember these things anyway? Is there some way of telling, or do you just mark these kinds of days in your ticker?

And I'm not so sure about that "better sites" thing, I really think this is probably one of the best... Against what everyone says, the internet is a small place.

Kristin -

I think I joined in spring of 2000, but I'm darned if I remember. Good on ya for remembering your joining date-ish! :) It's been - *fascinating* to be part of these boards. Ah, the old green MI! Though I like purple too, Melk, honest! :notworthy

And you're right as ever, Kristin - it's the people, here and CoE, that make it worth being part of this e-community. Always has been. From the irascible to the cheerfully looney to the just basically wonderful, it's a great deal of fun.

And of course I remember horsinaround. Didn't I see her over at the Pony recently?! Or maybe it was something pulled up from the void and I just didn't notice the date... I still am vaguely in touch with continuitygirl. Maybe will suggest she check this place out again.

Wow. Over 3 years here. I haven't really met anybody from the MI yet, though I'm hoping that will change in the next year - but have been to several Pony meets, which were awkward at first, but usually great fun. Apart from the first one, where I was old enough to be everybody's mother and the only woman and my back was killing me...now that was a little odd!

Anyway - long life and a healthy future to the Muggle Informer and all of us sad Harry Potter weirdos! :D  :rotfl:

I've only met one MIer, and that's more of an ish.... I spoke to Fleur on the phone a few months ago! :D

I remember my reg date first time round... 19th September, I only remember because it's Hermione's birthday :)

I've a question pour everyone. Why did you join? :)

I lurked around the site all summer before joining, and I only joined because I saw a convo between American Actress (double A) and Kristin, and I think they were discussing how Ron and Hermione would end up together - Ron suddenly blurting out in their seventh year on the train home that he loved her, or something like that... I can't remember... But yeah... :)

oh that sounds like a perfect ending for the books with ron and Hermione. They'll probably be fighting or arguing and he'll blurt it out. Aw! Perfect! Very JK

Some people can pull off a image in the sig very tastefully... ;)

Why did I join? Don't remember. It was probably just one of those nights where I was up till about 4 in the morning, so I wasn't in my right mind....

Just kidding ;)

And where did Fluer go anyway? I sometimes see her on MSN, but I almost never talk to her anymore.

when i first came here nigh on three years ago, i was by all accounts an oddball. there was a mutual tolerance vibe going on between myself and everyone else which came to an abrupt end when i got really angsty and mentally unbalanced, resulting in a permanent ban (this was when the place was still green)

then i kinda forgot about this place, but started lurking around a couple of months ago when i realised it still existed.

back in the day i'd post at least twenty times a day, now i think my average post count is around 1.3 a day. oh yeah and i dont swear and cause arguments and antagonize mods anymore (well... not much. there always has to be an exception). and i'm no longer such a mess and prone to posting loads of rubbish.

so in answer to your question, damn straight they have!!

hi Little miss

This is Amby - you may remeber me from the old green days

We (Melk and I) decided that with the new setup we would give everybody a second chance

So we will forget you were ever morgana and treat you as any other new member.

So welcome Little Miss and have a good time with us all:cool:

See, Amb, she hasn't forogtten you, she's just counting you as "Pony" rather than "MI" (a fair number of us are both, really). As for getting to meet lots of new people, Lanen... BOOK TOUR :D

Please excuse me now while I shudder at the thought of certain old Imladris problems being given second chances. Sam Lively? Aragorn? :barf:

i think i'm going to re-register again.

if there's one thing i didnt like about this place it was being called by my username although everyone knew who i was and what my real name was.

previous incarnations of myself were not entirely of my own doing, there were things contributing to my state of mental unbalance that were beyond my control at the time, which only resolved themselves when a rather good friend of mine (who was slightly deeper into everything than me) went and decided he didnt want to exist anymore. and went through with it :(

if you can truly understand that i was a completely different person back then (and not just say it to appear nice), and treat me how you would any lurker/newbie then i would greatly appreciate it. overfamiliarity or feigned smiles are not nice, and i just hope you're all being sincere.

ahhh life was so simple when i first came here.

Hey, Little Miss, I don't believe I've given you a proper re-welcome.

You might remember me, most likely not though, seeing as I'm not the memorable type. But I understand totally what you're talking about and I also know exactly how much a person can change over three years. I also know that stress as well as other things can make a person do crazy things and lash out in strange ways. And I also know what it's like to lose a friend.

So I'd just like to say :hug:s and that I, for one, am more than happy to see you back.

Cheers and good luck in the future.

Little Miss -

Welcome back. I remember you in your former incarnation, though I didn't post much then, you probably won't remember me. And I did think you were rather a pain, but I had no idea what you were going through.

I will not pretend I didn't know you back then, or don't remember. I would rather honour everything that you have been through and recognise the huge distance you have travelled, and the changes you have made to yourself. Not one person in a hundred comes through so terrible an experience having truly learned from it to become a better person, as you have. You should be genuinely proud of yourself, LM, at a fundamental level. That kind of courage is worthy of the highest admiration.

:notworthy

And on a side note - I do think you can rest assured that the smiles and the hugs are sincere. One thing that hasn't changed is the number of really good folk here at the MI.

It is an honour to have you back. Our own genuine Phoenix.

Lanen

PS - Amberion, Kristin's right, I was thinking of you as your Pony self! You old hugmeister, you! ;)

i didnt tell anyone much about anything back then, just figured now maybe it was about time i explained myself. thanks for understanding :)

feel free to call me monica. it is my name after all :arrr:

Hello Little Miss. :) I wasn't around first time on MI, but I stick here when I eventually re-registered on CoE... :p Bad habit of mine, I guess... Stick around.. ;) Am also a member of Khazad-dum and Council of Elrond, even though I post mostly now days on livejournal... :o

Re about meeting MIers: I've met glaelia. :p But I must say most posters I've met are from CoE and/or KD... so far I've met grand total around 35 of them :p

I have a question. And rather than start a new thread at the Quidditch Pitch, where I thought of this question, I decided to post it here, where people would remember what I'm talking about.

But what on earth ever happened to our House Quidditch Teams?

I thought those were fun. I felt special, cuz I had a possition. I could work out actual rules for a game if anyone's a bit fuzzy... no, I haven't put a lot of thought into this.

Oh yeah!! I remember them! I remember what we used to do.. Ask each other questions, and then we'd be alloud to pass the Quaffle or something...

I think I was Ravenclaw's Keeper... I remember American Actress was our Captain... And the 'matches' were always between Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, because the only ones who were online at more or less the same time were, me Ced, and Ravenclaw I think

Lol... Good times, good time :)

I think the main reason we gave up is the fact that we never figured out a way for us to play, because we couldn't all be on at once. It's a tough thing to work out.

With you, me, and Lanen for starters, I think I can safely say our average age here is well above the typical for HP boards. :)

Actually I was thinking message boards in general

Amb considers himself 18 at heart so this makes him 18

Lanen

Amberion, you honey, you are NOT 18. You are a wonderful grown-up man of 40(-mumble) and we wouldn't have you any other way!

18 is fine for 18-year-olds. It looks good on them. The poor dears. ;) :D

Now, I'm not saying that you can't be 18 at heart. That's one of the advantages of growing older (there have to be some, right?!) We can be any age that we have already been. That gives me 45 years to choose from! Sometimes I'm 21, sometimes I'm 14, and sometimes I'm 137 (ok, ok, I'm a time traveller, I admit it - just don't tell anybody else or I'll have to kill you!). The heart knows no age.

Thank goodness.

Sometimes i feel like a 35 year old stuck in a sixteen year old's body. But then again I feel like a 16 year old stuck in a sixteen year old body. :D LOL, then again there are people like Xaz, who never exactly meet their mature point. It's going to take me awhile. Like I always say to things like reaching a mature age;

"I'll make camp here, and reach for the summit tomorrow"

;)
