As suggested by Katz and Pengi (correct me if I'm wrong!)
He's the last one... The Last Maurader, he watched Sirius die, and he is a werewolf :(
This man needs some serious hugging (or therapy but this is Britian ;) )
So here, we shall praise the wonderfulness that is Remus Lupin, and hug a lot!
Poor man....

I think it was Katz who suggested it. :)
*hugs Remus* *carries on hugging Remus like there's no tomorrow*
Something that's brough a whole new wave of teariness over me is JK Rowling saying: "And his failing is that he does like to be liked. And that’s where he slips up because he’s been disliked so often. So he’s always so pleased to have friends, so he cuts them an awful lot of slack." :( This just makes me feel awful for him. He hardly ever had friends, so that he had to cling to the ones he did, and constantly be worried about doing anything that might make them abandon him. He must have been so worried when the Marauders found out that he was a werewolf. :( But he was lucky to have such wonderful friends who accepted him for who he was inside. :) Who are ... just memories now ... :(:(:( *shakes fist at sky* Cut the man some slack, JK!
*hugs Remus again* *resists the urge to grope* :D

I´ll do what I can. :)
I don´t want to see him go but I don´t want him to be alone and the last one still alive, either. :(
I was very touched by JKR´s comment on how she sees him, too. He´s such a wonderful man and gets so little recognition for it. :(

Sirius was my favorite character, but I love Lupin, too.
 for my favorite werewolf.
I'd like to present one of my favorite scenes in the entire Harry Potter series. In honor of our old friends Padfoot and Moony...
From Chapter 17 (Cat, Rat, and Dog) from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:
"But then...," Lupin muttered, staring at Black so intently it seemed he was trying to read his mind, "...why hasn't he shown himself before now? Unless" -- Lupin's eyes suddenly widened, as though he was seeing something beyond Black, something none of the rest could see, "-- unless he was the one...unless you switched...without telling me?"
Very slowly, his sunken gaze never leaving Lupin's face, Black nodded.
"Professor," Harry interrupted loudly, "what's going on --?"
But he never finished the question, because what he saw made his voice die in his throat. Lupin was lowering his wand, gazing fixedly at Black. The Professor walked to Black's side, seized his hand, pulled him to his feet so that Crookshanks fell to the floor, and embraced Black like a brother.

Our luckless lycanthrope may need even more hugging in the future. Now that Voldemort's return is public knowledge, the Ministry will of course be springing into action. Knowing the Ministry, though, what would be an obvious course to follow?
That's right; crack down on those "undesireable elements" deemed likely to support the Dark Lord as their predecessors once did. Put them under surveillance; restrict their liberties further; even hunt them outright. It'll mean rough times for part-humans and once-humans.
Of course, the Order might be able to pull a few strings:
Lupin looked up from his book; the young woman's eyes were still fixed upon him, although they were now grey.
"May I help you, Tonks?"
The Auror blinked diffidently and carefully set her features. "I'm simply carrying out my assigned mission profile: surveillance of werewolf activity in the greater London area. Constant Vigilance and all that, you know..."

need to reread everything... but why didn't sirius tell lupin? was he still being secret-keeper even tho he didn't have that role anymore? still keeping secrets out of respect for the old role?
yep _ this scene shows some deep friendship goin on. you wonder about sirius' care for harry now _ was it because of guilt, or was it real? ;) but nah _ the guilt was polished off when he bought harry the firebolt, hehehe... just kidding. :)
well... lupin technically isn't the last marauder... there's still scabbers - pettigrew - wormtail... sheesh of all the animals you could possibly want to disguise yourself in, why would u wanna turn into a... rat? and ron has such strange taste in... pets. ...

1) I believe that they switched at the last minute, fearing that they'd been compromised by a spy; therefore, no telling anyone about the switch.
2) I'd say he's the Last Marauder; Wormtail may not be dead, but he's definitely left the club. Resigned his membership. Bottled out. Scarpered.
And as for the advantages of ratitude...
- when discretion is required, a rat is far more useful than a Tiger
- it may not be a matter of choice. I noticed that all the Animagi we've seen have animal shapes consistent with their personalities. Perhaps it's a bit like the Sorting Hat; you submit to the process, and it shapes you into the animal most appropriate to your nature. And Pettigrew was certainly a rat before he was an Animagus...

1) If I were to write any more, it would probably have to move to "Tales of Hogwarts...". The mods will tolerate a few lines, but after that it becomes fanfic.
2) I realize that I myself have just added fuel to the fire, but I have to ask: why have so many MItes seized upon the Tonks-Lupin ship idea? Have readers more careful than myself detected foreshadowing that I missed? Can anyone tell me what traits make them especially compatible? Or is it simply that Tonks is the only young adult single female in the series, and so it seems she should be somebody's love interest, and Lupin seems the most deserving?
I'm not saying I disagree with Tonks/Lupin; I'm just surprised that so many expressed such fervent support so promptly.
3) I'm also grieving for the scenes that will never be :( ; still between the Pensieve and Legilimens we have plot devices to create flashbacks. Best we can hope for, I suppose:( :( .

I would have really liked to see Tonks and Sirius together, he could have done with a strong partner like Tonks.
I don´t think she´s exactly Lupin´s type, or he his. I think we just all like Tonks and we don´t want Lupin to be alone.
I´d like to point out that I don´t tend to look at book characters only in the light of who could team up with whom. I can perfectly live with noone of the adults having any serious love interests at all. :)

*cries for the umpteenth time* everyone :(
I was reading every single Remus bit in PoA and OotP last night, and I think...I think I'm ever so slightly confused... Well, somewhere at the begining of OotP it says Remus was staying with Sirius in London, but then nearing the end of the book Harry or Ron says Sirius will go bonkers in that house alone...
Was Remus only staying with Sirius during the summer, or does Remus have his own place?
I actually really need to know, as I'm attempting a fan fiction at long last...
Regarding Tonks and Remus, I DID ship Remus/Sirius, but that will never happen due to unforseen cirumstances...
But I think Tonks and Remus could work... However, is Remus willing to have a relationship with someone, we know he likes to be liked, and a potential partner may have inhabitions about dating a werewolf. Can lyancorpthy get transmitted through bodily fluids? thus a relationship being very difficult, unless his partner has a secret longing to be a werewolf. So if it is contracted through bodily fluids as well as bites, will a long-term relationship suffer as they could never have children or sleep together... God I do go on... Its those AIDS videos we watched when I was fifteen getting to me... :(
If JKR kills Remus off... I don't think she'll be forgiven, espesically after Sirius...
Pengi

I think Remus was staying with Sirius all year, but he was away a lot because of all the Order stuff. There's also the possibility that Harry/Ron is a bit clueless and didn't realise :p
Good luck with your fanfiction, can I see it when it's finished? :D
I shipped Remus/Sirius too. :) I'm not giving up just 'cause one of them died, after all, there was lots of subtext in OotP. :p
On Remus and Tonks ... well, I like them both, but it doesn't seem like it would work to me. And lycanthropy being transmitted is a scary idea :( If it's possible, I get the feeling that Remus would just isolate himself so that he didn't hurt anyone else. Another reason he needs a major hug.

Cheers Pengi :D I think I figured out where Grimmauld Place is, (it all ties up neatly now for me fanfic)
Grimmauld Place, I reckon, is in Islington, 20 mins from Kings Cross, an there is a real place called Joseph Grimaldi Park (which is just a large Square), and it's a pretty run down area, and there is A Cruickshank Street, and Percy Circus! So that's where I can now base my fan fic! And if I ever finish it (hey, got over two months to do it...) of course you can read it :)
Poor Remus :( He needs to find love...

Was Remus only staying with Sirius during the summer, or does Remus have his own place? I remember at the end of PoA, or was it GoF (aaargh, must tell boyfriend to give my books back!!!), Dumbledore actually tells Sirius to "lie low at Lupin´s for a while", so Sirius was staying with Lupin at first, who seems to have his own place then. But then, maybe nothing very permanent, and maybe it´s not in London, so it wasn´t practical to make it their base.

Anyways as far as I understand lycantrophy is only transmitted through bites while the attacker is in werewolf form, that´s why the Marauders had to be animals to be able to get near Remus during those times, and why he had to stay in his office as a teacher. I don´t think it´s transmitted in any other way. If a werewolf was to have a partner, he´d just have to take care that they can´t bite them during the werewolf phase, which is possible if they take their special potion regularly (Wolfsbane, wasn´t it?).

Wow, that´s so great! I´d love to live in London and be able to wander around these places! (Of course, I´d just hang around No. 11 and 13 waiting for Snape to turn up. :D)
Please do post your findings in the "Names and meanings in HP" thread, will you Fleur? People there will be so delighted.
Oh and do tell us when you´ve found the phone box that leads to the Ministry, and St. Mungo´s! :D
EDIT, this is too cool to be true, here it is: Percy Circus and Cruickshank St. (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=530882&y=182833&z=1&sv=Percy+Circus&st=1&tl=Percy+Circus,+WC1&searchp=newsearch.srf&mapp=newmap.srf) (Link goes to streetmap.co.uk)
Off Percy Circus, to the north west, it says "VER. R.", which is, according to my London A-Z, Vernon Road. :D
To the south west from there, near the Mount Pleasant post office, is Phoenix Place. :)

Yep, at the end of GoF, Dumbledore tells Sirius to round up the old gang and then lie low at Lupin's. Of course it probably isn't much of a place since Lupin can't get a job.
I understand the urge to see Lupin in a relationship, poor guy. But I don't understand why people are so eager for it to be Remus/Tonks ... and I understand the Remus/Sirius thing even less.

Although we don't know Remus' dating history for certain, it wouldn't surprise me if he had avoided close relationships throughout his adult life. The only time I can imagine him dating would be at Hogwarts during the Marauder years, when his confidence and self-esteem were at a peak due to the friendship and acceptance he had found with Sirius, James and Wormtail.
As for lycanthropy, according to Newt Scamander (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, p. 41), "Humans turn into werewolves only when bitten." Now, while recent events have contravened some of the statements made by Scamander in FBaWtFT, I have confidence in this information. After all, in all the centuries, perhaps millennia of werewolf attacks, surely there were victims whose spouses or partners either did not know or were willing to accept the risk. If contact other than biting could transmit the curse, one expects that at least one case would have been documented.
Other obstacles?
The idea of an SO who shifts shape might be repulsive to some, but as a Metamorphmagus, I highly doubt Tonks would have a problem with this.
The age gap? As the daughter of Sirius' cousin, Tonks is technically a generation younger than Lupin. But as there can be quite an age difference between cousins, what does this amount to in years? On the "life without love" thread, I was able to figure Tonks to be 21 (17 at graduation, 3 years Auror training, plus she's been an Auror for a year), and while Lupin was harder to pin down, 35 came up as an estimate (add Harry's age to graduation age and estimate how long after graduation James married Lily). Among Muggles, that's a significant but hardly insurmountable difference, especially since Remus is probably a bit innocent for his age in matters of the heart, having avoided romance for so long. Given what we don't know about the aging rate of werewolves (and Metamorphmagi, for that matter), a 14-year gap may mean even less.
Of course, it would be disastrous for Tonks' career as an Auror if it became known that she was romantically involved with a werewolf. Of course, it would be disastrous for Tonks' career as an Auror if it became known that she was involved with the Order of the Phoenix, so clearly she's not beyond depending on discretion.
So it would seem that what it truly boils down to is chemistry. They seem to work well together, but since we only see them when they're part of a larger group, we don't really know how they relate to each other one-on-one. Perhaps the next book, for good or ill, will reveal more.

oh. but that was hilarious... i shipped sirius/snape actually. ...
been thinking of the marauder's friendship... and it looks to me that james appealed to the adventurious side of sirius... remus to the calming side... and pettigrew just followed coz he had nothing better to do :D... just kidding... but it looked to me that without werewolf blood remus would seem too normal a person for the three... if remus hadn't been werewolf, the marauders would not have become so strong friends in the first place. ...
they became friends coz potter, black and pettigrew were just in the wrong place at the wrong time... they were all roommates... they saw lupin change :p ... but james and sirius knew they'd be best friends at first sight _ awwwwe... hehe... that last part i just made up; i don't know how the marauders formed, and i hope rowling tells it in the next books :) . ...

i've always had the impression that Tonks was somewhere near Charlie or Percy's ages. maybe in between Charlie's and Percy's. she doesn't strike me as someone within the same age group as Bill, but she definitely belongs to a younger age range. she's probably closer to Charlie Weasley's age, though i would assume that Charlie's just a few years older than she is.
i think that now that Remus might stay single for the rest of the series. hope i'm wrong though, i want to see him truly happy again! but it seems to me that bachelorhood appeals to him more than anything else at the moment ;)

Tonks ought to be 21 (I did the math in an earlier post). Remus' age is uncertain, but roughly 35 (uncertain because we still don't know how much time elapsed between James and Lily's graduation and Harry's birth). Also, Remus is desribed in both PoA and OotP as "quite young"; perhaps werewolves age differently.
So, there is an age difference, but not a huge one, especially when you consider that Lupin probably doesn't have much relationship experience, while judging by Tonks' bold style and attractive features, she's probably had at least some familiarity with the subject. And so they are probably of comparable maturity level in that regard.
I hate to say it, but you're probably right about Remus' future:( . Still, unlikely schemes to see Remus rewarded with a little affection at least have better odds than unlikely schemes to bring back poor Sirius.

Anyways, I got a great idea for a fic while walking my grandmother's dog the other day. And then, you know, other inpirational places.
"All right Fred, your turn," said Ginny.
"Tonks. Truth or dare?"
Tonks, who had ben rapidly changing her hair just for the fun of it, looked up, her hair long and black. "Dare."
Fred grinned an evil grin. "I dare you to kiss Lupin."
Yes. If only.....

As much as I hate to rub salt in a wound that goes deep into the heart, Remus has lost his *three* best friends. He can at least console himself with the thought that James and Sirius are waiting beyond the veil for him, but his little buddy Peter...that will continue to ache.

Woah... it's 2.10am... I've just been reading PoA (I will continue reading Chapters 17-19 until I can do it with out crying...) and Remus blames everything on himself... I never noticed the line
"If I hadn't been so foolhardy - so stupid - then none of this would have happened."
:(
The poor man....
I threw my copy of PoA (reasons regarding Sirius too) at my wardrobe, several years of bookmarks falling out... I blame my bedroom, it was so clean, made me go loopy...

I think it's a bit ironic...
Remus was the most compassionate and responsible of the Marauders. He was made a prefect, partly (we suspect) to keep the others from getting too far out of hand. His nurturing ways in PoA are vital to Harry's well-being, in fact his very survival.
Sirius, on the other hand, has always been a hard-edged hero. In PoA, it was implied that Azkaban had worked this change on him. As for the prank that nearly ended in horror, it was easy to believe that Snape must have been up to one dastardly deed after another and had finally goaded Sirius beyond the limits of his temper.
In OotP, however, we learn that Sirius's undercurrent of cruelty and anger predated his imprisonment. Mind you, growing up in the house of Black as he did, it's amazing that he made a hero of himself, even a hero with a dark streak under the surface. Returning to 12 Grimmauld Pl was obviously bringing out his snarly side - he even takes it out on Harry at one point! Again, it's understandable and I sympathize, but isn't it curious:
- that the dog is the one with the wild, savage streak, and the wolf is the unfailingly loyal one who is entirely devoted to his friends?

Dogs are wolves with human traits. Traits of aggressiveness, viciousness, territorialism, and irritability. However they are also loyal, trusting, and sweet.
Wolves raised in the wilderness show very few of these traits. They are loyal, trustworthy, nurturing, responsible, and only kill when they need food. Wolve are also territorial, and extremely vicious when provoked.
Very similar, indeed.
Sirius is a dog.
Remus is a wolf.
Both are acting like normal specimens of their respective species.
Harry, the OotP, the Mauraders, Dumbledore, the students, they are/were their pack and they are/were unfailingly loyal to them.
I had more to say on the subject, but I forgot what...
Oh well!!

For those who don't partake of fanfic, the "wolves mate for life, therefore so do werewolves" theory gets trotted out pretty regularly in RL slashfic, of which a rather large amount has been written  It's gotten to the point where I saw someone post a challenge for fanfic in which Remus' mate expects monogamy, but Remus wants to see other people - turning cliches on their heads is seemingly among the most popular aspects of fanfic challenges.

I doubt it was anything personal; Voldemort made a point of recuiting Dark creatures, promising them mock sympathy; a werewolf couldn't help but be tempted. Of course, our Remus didn't take the bait.
Fleur Peter didnt think so ;)
When the teachers were talking in the three broomsticks they said they knew somene close to the Potters was spy for Voldemort. And Remus was very close, closer than the rest of the order I guess.
And Sirius said in the shrieking Shack that he didnt think Voldmort would take someone weak like Peter as spy, failing to see that the weakness was the problem.
so not judging Peter to be able to be the spy the close one left was Remus.
Kristin
07-21-2003, 02:45 PM
Poor Remus. It's not that they suspected him specifically, that anybody thought he was the spy. It's just that they thought it wasn't Sirius or Peter, so by process of elimination, he was thought to be the spy.
And poor guy, he didn't know the truth for 12 years. Sirius knew the truth. Peter, of course, knew the truth. James was dead. And Remus had to think that Sirius was the double-crosser. He lost all his friends, and he didn't even have the knowledge of Sirius' innocence to console him.
And now he really has lost all his old friends.

That's what I thought to KillerBunny (welcome to the MI btw! :D ) maybe Remus can kinda stand in place of Sirius, Lily and James. But, Harry might think he was trying to replace Sirius completely, and well, Harry with his hormones, (hopefully they'll have cooled down, he needs chocolate) might get mad, and shun Remus... But Remus did tell Harry to keep in contact over the summer, and Harry was dumbstruck to see everyone there, that bit made me cry... :( Now I need chocolate....

*:hug:s Remy some more while cheering for Remus/Tonks, before sighing because she managed three Sirius puns into one chapter*
But, I have an excerpt from Chapter 4 of my fic, Eyes of a Different Sort, that has Remus/Tonks in it. Whee!
Remus stood up. “Thank you, Mr. Malfoy, for that lovely introduction,” he said with a smile. “I will not deny that I am a werewolf, but that is why I have my lovely wife Tonks to take my place. Also, Professor Snape will be mixing a potion for me, so I will be harmless.”
Appy squealed. Remus looked over at her. “Congratulations! I always hoped you’d get together!” Remus raised his eyebrows.
“Right. Tonks, would you like to say something?”
Tonks stood up. “Wotcher, my name is Tonks Lupin – ”
Yes, so I'm now in the habit of sticking in Remus/Tonks into all my fics.
But, Harry might think he was trying to replace Sirius completely, and well, Harry with his hormones, (hopefully they'll have cooled down, he needs chocolate) might get mad, and shun Remus...
Fleur, that's a lovely insight. Harry might have cooled down, but... (right, this sentence is hard for me to say; I'm in denial) after Sirius' death (still in denial!), I think he'll be as riled up as ever.
I hope Remus gives him some chocolate.

I don't know if this is still in question (I've been on vacation the past week) but Remus Lupin is my favorite character so I've just sat down and read the whole thread. I am also feeling his pain along with the rest of you!!!Regarding the age difference, specifically Lupin's age, I believe that he is actually 40 years old (and so Sirius would be as well). If I am correct, The Marauders and Snape were all in the same year, which means they are within a few months' age of one another, and OotP mentions that Snape is a forty year-old man. (For verification I don't remember the exact page but I believe it was an article from the Daily Prophet).

I had been reasonably sure that was what I had read (regardig the ages) although I have since been skimming and found Lucius Malfoy mentioned as 41 which may have been what I was remembering... You'll have to forgive me, I read the book in 2 massive sit-down sessions over the course of one day and it seems that the details have begun to scramble in my mind. I must really be going crazy though because I still remember reading about Snape's age too... I'll keep looking when I have the book in my possession. My apologies though if I was mistaken (which it appears I may have been). Ah, Poor Remus. I hug him every day mentally....not really. I'm not that sad yet.
Okie dokie, lets see what there is to say.
I don't think Remus is going to be killed off. For one, if would be kind of nice if he is the last Maurader standing. It would be wonderful if one of them made it through the entire War. I just have this wonderful image of after the final battle. Harry and Remus standing up together in the setting sun with this collapsed fortress standing all around them. Yes, I realize I am horribly sentimental.
Am I a Tonks/Remus shipper? Yes, I would have to say so. For one, I do support couples with large age differences. I don't actually know why I support R/T. Quite possibly because of all the wonderful fanfiction I've read. But, also, it just seemed to me as soon as I met her she and Remus should get together. Especially now after Sirius is gone. Remus as lost the last of his best friends and Tonks has lost her only normal cousin. Even if they don't stick around together for a while, it would only be natural if they give each other a lil comfort ;)
If, horrors upon horrors, JK Rolwing does kill off Remus, my three friends and I have degreed we will have a book burning and not read any following books in the series. But, here's a smidgen of hope. I remember reading somewhere that Remus is JK's fav. character. As a writer, and I'm sure other original writers out there can concur, it is extremely hard to kill off your favourite character. I just can't see a point to his death. I understand Sirius, I really do. Sirius was someone Harry could have hid behind if he chose to. Harry needs to face the threat on his own. But, Remus...? He doesn't really do enough to need to be killed off.

...but unlikely unless Lupin used a pseudonym. I get the impression that Dumbledore was wary of the potential backlash should students' parents find out a werewolf was in school with their children - consider how the first Shrieking Shack incident was hushed up  Snape, in defiance of this thread's title, and more importantly the fact that when Lupin returned to teach, almost none of the students knew about his lycanthropy until the second Shrieking Shack incident. I suspect Hairy Snout would have been one of the nigh-infinite ;) references Hermione used for the werewolf essay assigned by Snape; had Lupin written it, she would have noticed and likely mentioned it in her explanation of how she'd realized Lupin was a werewolf.

Lupin really has had such a tragic life, just reading azkaban its such a shame that every time he's not well you know its cause he's away turning into a wolf :( And that has happened to him once a month for basically all of his life :(
He is such a great guy and i think that Harry will go to him if Sirius doesnt return ;) cause they really did connect quite well in azkaban.
But my only wee problem with him is that when Molly goes to Sirius you werent much use in Azkaban, Lupin doesnt really stand up for Sirius when i think he should have done.
If JK kills Lupin then the books that are already mighty close to getting burnt, will be burnt ;) (unless it is a decent death and he dies directly to save Harry or something)
