I am awful at writing, but I thought I'd have a go at one of Kristin's ideas to a silly Hogwarts story. Mine is a love story between Ron and Hermione and also a "twisted tale" about the Sorting Hat. It has to do with the line, "I'll eat myself if you can find a smarter hat than me." So, here it goes...

Horror of the Hat
Chapter One, the beginning:
Hermione sat in her seat on the Hogwarts Express. She was going to start her first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was quite nervous as she was a muggle born, she was born in a non magic family. She has met a couple of interesting people on the train, Neville Longbottom, who had quite a short-term memory, Ron Weasley, he had bright red hair, a pet rat and a very cute expression. Hermione liked this boy and wanted to get to know him really badly. Next to him sat the famous Harry Potter, the one that had killed Lord Voldemort, he had a scar on his forehead, the mark that Voldemort had given him while trying to kill him, black hair and was quite short. Hermione was even a muggle and she knew about Harry Potter.
As the train stopped she thought about a book she had read three times over in the summer, a very good book about Hogwarts’ History, called Hogwarts, A History. It had said that you are sorted into a certain house, Slytherin, Gryfindor, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, by a very smart hat, one that could read your mind, Hermione did not know how this worked, but she thought it was quite brilliant. She stepped off the train with her trunk and heard a voice calling for first years, it was a very deep voice and quite loud, she followed the voice until she met a very big man. This man’s name was Hagrid, he was the gamekeeper for Hogwarts. Hermione followed him to a fleet of small boats in front of a lake, they all got in and the boats started to move across the lake. They were bewitched, another thing Hermione found from Hogwarts, A History.
They were now in the castle, they walked up a stairway and met a woman with her hair in a tight bun and a very strict expression. This woman’s name was Minerva McGonagall, or Professor McGonagall for the students. “Everyone, follow me please,”the woman said. They walked into a room with four big tables and each house’s colours and mascot above them. Candles were floating in thin air and the ceiling was bewitched to look like the weather outside. This was all very interesting to Hermione for she had never seen anything like this before. They walked onto a small stage with a small wooden stool in front of the line of first years. The hat seemed to have come to life as a rip in the front started to sing, “You may not think I’m pretty, but don’t rely on what you see, I’ll eat myself if you can find a smarter hat than me...” Hermione snorted and a few heads looked her way, she blushed. Surely you must be able to find a smarter hat than this one!Hermione thought. It was quite interesting that you would be able to have a hat made many centuries before, and then afterwards not be able to find a new way to improve a simple hat! Hermione wondered if it was possible to have “newer technology” in the wizarding world... then she came to a conclusion. I’ll try and make a smarter hat! She thought, if other wizards could do it, how bad could it be with a few years’ studying. She went back to listening to the song. She was too tired to plan this now. Professor McGonagall told them to sit down on the stool when their names were called and put the hat on and it would sort them. One person went to Slytherin, two to Hufflepuff, three to Ravenclaw and two to Gryfindor, including Neville, then it was Hermione’s turn. Hermione had read up on all the houses and didn’t know which was best, she just new she didn't want to be in Slytherin. She wobbled over to the chair, sat down and let the hat slide over her eyes. She heard it muttering in her ear, she was too nervous to hear what it was saying, she was trying to focus on her qualities, nervous what the hat should choose. The only thing she heard was “Very smart” from the hat, yes, I try to put an effort in being as smart as I can she thought, "I can see that." replied the hat, then finally, the hat shouted, “GRYFINDOR!” she smiled, pulled the hat off and joined the Gryfindor table next to Neville. She hoped that Ron would go into Gryfindor, she just longed to talk to him. She wondered if he would let her talk to him.
Dinner was a marvelous feast with any kind of food imaginable. When she was finished and quite full, Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster, told them the rules of Hogwarts and where not to go. I won’t be going any place bad, Hermione thought, I’ll be in the library, researching for the hat.

I'm not one for detail, but this is just to give you the idea of how it starts, it'll have more detail when the last couple of chapters come around... when she makes the hat...
