I've been mulling this over and over ever since I finished reading OotP.

Luna means moon, obviously, and Remus is obviously connected to the moon through his lycanthropy.

So is there any way that these two could be connected? Maybe Luna is a werewolf, and it'll be explained in a later book. Or maybe they're distant realitives...

The name Remus is from greek mythology a boy raised by a wolf.

Loop/Loup is *i think* the french for wolf and Lupin is i think based upon that stem.

Luna is the Latin for moon (so yes definite connection there being what happens to lupin at the full moon).

OR

Luna can be from lunatic so no connection. The later i think makes more sense as Luna is often referred to as loony. i think anything else is just wish ful thinking

I hope you don't mind if I elaborate.

Romulus & Remus were the sons of Rhea Silvia and the god Mars who founded Rome. Romulus killed Remus in the process of that, incidentally, and becamee the sole founder of Rome. Both were suckled by a she-wolf aftter they were exposed on the order of their maternal grandfather.

Lupus is the Latin for wolf / lupinus ('lupine' in English) would be 'wolfish'.

Lunatic comes from luna, too / it is connected to people who sleepwalk by full moon, and with the idea that some people (women) behave strangely at full moon.

I wonder whether there is a connection. It could be that JKR was really just tempted by the easy connection between Luna and looney as a nickname. And she does like red herrings.

I think it refers to her being kinda crazy, but maybe she will turn out to be one, highly doubtful though

I thought it might be that her mad wizard scientist mother (who blew herself up during a magical experiment) came up with the Wolsbane Potion and named her daughter in connexion with that.

But it's probably just the lunatic thing. :)

Another obscure connection--

In book 3 Peeves calls Lupin "Loony, loopy Lupin." Luna is called "Loony Lovegood."

Connection! ;)

Sorry, I'll go back to hiding under my rock now...

I've come up with worse vague connections than that! Infact, I even sang Peeves's song in my head when I read about "Loony" Lovegood :0.

But I really don't think there's much of a...

Hey, wait. What about Romulus? I mean, the Roman one. What if Remus LUPIN had a brother and they had a falling out?

Or... not...

See? I do come up with vague connections as well!

Romulus killed Remus... Arguing over the name of Rome or something... I hope this doesn't foresee something... Like the Sirius star is short-lived...

Ah Loony Lupin! I knew there was something else... I am determined to find a stronger connection! :p
