Ok what yall think about this devil spawned idea of counting post? does it create spam posting? is it cool or is it the devil!?

I personally have on ocasion *gasp* posted just to get a higher count and don't think that the count idea is cool

Fleurdelacour

I have never spam posted, although some people thought Cedric and I did a few years back... But we weren't. We just had to much time on our hands.

I think, some people, on other boards, only talk to people with a post count higher then 1000, and the newbies, in order to loose their newbie status, and be accepted, post, and post, one letter posts... It's dreadful...

Ravenclaw
07-26-2003, 08:39 PM
In highschool, never was bothered by popularity. On boards, rarely look at post-count. I did, once, when I was a newbie, but then we changed and I lost all my posts so then I stopped caring.

What's the big deal anyway about posts? Hehe, I've been here as long as you FleurD, and look at my count! lol, I may not post often, but I say what I need to say when it needs to be said.

I don't much like the post counting thing either, if I had an opinion. It doesn't much bother me.

Colli
07-26-2003, 08:44 PM
It's an okay idea. I mean, it's neither here nor there for me. There are going to be newbies who post slut whether they're trying to get a higher post count or just a little over eager. ;)

I do think it's nice on larger boards (like the CoE), to help identify newer members and welcome them, etc. I'm pretty bad at recognizing new names :o, but seeing that someone only has 3 or 4 posts kinda jumps out at ya.

Cedric
07-26-2003, 10:22 PM
I kinda agree with ya there Colli, because sometimes when I don't post for a while, it makes it easier to tell who new people are, so I don't get as highly confused.

I think it's a matter of your time on the board. New people will be excited to be new, so they'll be posting a lot, and it might be important to them. But with the older members, it just doesn't matter. I mean, I'll below 200, and while it seems strange to me, I really don't care.

Me and Fleur spamming??? Noooooooooo ;)

LOL, I understand, Cedric. I'm less than 20 posts shy of surpassing Elfea as highest post count, but it embarrasses me more than anything else because it means I have no life. ;)

Which won't be true in a matter of weeks, thankfully. Helloooo college!

On this board, post counts can't matter that much anyway, we've been crashed and moved so many times. ;)

Lord Schaudt
07-27-2003, 09:55 AM
True, but i mean on some of the more stable boards i have seen (and joined and left might i add) it was all important

Here Here for Coe and MI!! lets not let post counts ever rule us

For a while in Imladris i was posting everywhere just for post, but i tried to avoid really dumb post. then it crashed and i went in denial, greif, and fianlly i stopeed caring(as of this post i am 48 ranked poster lol)....

Little Miss

post counts only matter until you get past 50, cause then you get your custom title.

*is not posting for the sake of it*

PhineasNigellus
07-27-2003, 03:17 PM
how can you make the custom title work i tried but could find the right option so settled for my funky hagrid pic instead.

(hagrid soo would have been a rockstar!)

lithorose
07-27-2003, 05:39 PM
You can only have a custom title after 100 days. Then you can change it under User Profile.:)

I don't much care about my post count. Isn't highest, isn't lowest, and like Colli said a high post count isn't necessarily something to be proud of. I spend too much time online as it is.;)

Other sites I've posted at will tend to ignore anything I say because of a low post-count, which I think is a shame. Probably explains why I don't post very much either.

Ravenclaw
07-28-2003, 12:44 AM
OK, here's my idea. Keep the post count, whatever, I don't care. BUT LET'S ABOLISH POSTING DISCRIMINATION!

I know what you mean, lithrose, I go to other boards and feel a tad overwhelmed, and I post, and people don't say anything. It's stupid, newbies opinions are just as valuable as the people with no lives (don't take offense. I know you have some sort of life... I hope.) So I'm making it a vow (though I never have in the past) to (continue) not to discriminate against low post-counters. Actually, this board here is pretty good at that. In fact, it's one of the most welcoming boards I'VE been to on the net. Especially with Ced's big warm welcomes.

Hehe.

Good grief, this old chestnut again?

On the original Imladris site, there was a lot of post-slutting, until the first Ponypocalypse. Then all of, e.g., mik's 10,000 posts disappeared, etc., and after a brief while of whinging and complaining, I think folks just got on with their lives. Certainly after all the meltdowns since I kinda thought this particular topic had died the death! There again, I pretty much don't bother with other sites anymore, as my limited experience in those other realms has been unpleasant. [Aside from The Worlds of Anne McCaffrey (tm), which is rather like this place.]

I have no idea what my post count is, but it was a lot higher on the old Pony, mainly because I had a darn sight more time to play just then... I'm all for not bothering with post counts. There, I've said it! Lanen raises her shield against incoming troutings

Ravenclaw
07-28-2003, 01:16 PM
I'd never trout you, Lanen, especially when I agree with you...

Well, maybe I'd trout you sometime, but only if you deserve it!

:D

LOL Lanen! Actually, I think most of us here agree with you. :)

I was going to say something really brilliant and witty and when it finally loaded the reply screen I had forgotten what I wanted to say

Doh!

Anyway if I saw anyone being discriminated against because of length of time or post counts , I will send a call out to the toadies (Tim and Bombie for those who dont frequent CoE) and they will descend upon the discriminator and what they will do will mot be pretty :D :D :D

Colli

I hate spam posters.

I have a cure for it tho, just ask the few who have crossed me on this one.

If I catch you post slutting you get your count reset to "0".

If you become more trouble than my time allows you get a final warning and then if you still don't get the message I'll close them out.

Cedric
07-29-2003, 12:21 AM
Rc, I haven't welcomed anyone very much in a long time... Donno why. Maybe because I don't notice new people as well as I use to. This place sure is getting bigger.

I'll try better next time :)

ChianaWeasley

I really don't understand the importance of bringing up your post count...is it just to show whose more active or whose been around longer? Actually I never knew about post slutting or what it meant. I just knew you weren't supposed to double post I learned that was a no no on Khazadum.

But I do however, understand the threat of turning your count back to zero. To me it'd be like taking away house points . Not good:eek:

Ravenclaw
07-29-2003, 11:53 PM
House points, that's actually a good comparison, Chiana.

Well, asides from the fact that they really don't mean anything.

You're right, despite what people say about post counts, Melkor's threat is very real, and I don't think anyone would want that.

Am I making sense? I'm having a day where I don't make any sense. I'm rambling again. I'm stopping now.

Lord Schaudt
07-30-2003, 09:20 AM
I will never understand why some people do give more weight to someones words if they have a big post count, i mean a n00b could be brillant, you just never know

ChianaWeasley
07-30-2003, 02:02 PM
I agree Schaudt

I felt more comfortable once I had a higher post count, I guess because I felt that I'd been around long enough ppl know me better. Makes sense? Raven has sent here nonsense rambling over to me i guess ;)

Colli
07-31-2003, 01:42 AM
Completely on-topic nonsense rambling, right? ;)

(edit) Oh, the irony's killing me. I surpassed Elfea's post count with this post. :)

Lord Schaudt
07-31-2003, 09:30 AM
Congrats!

Which is exactly the kind of thing i hate seeing, people watching there post counts comapred to others

Colli
07-31-2003, 03:30 PM
Actually, Lord Schaudt, I have better things to do with my time than sit and watch my post count climb, I thought I had noted that earlier in this thread!

Inspired by this thread that you so kindly started, I went and looked at the so readily available list. And seeing how the thing that happened had just happened, and it happened in this thread, I didn't think it entirely inappropriate to say something. Apparently that was the wrong thing to do, as I offended you, and I apologize.

But, the moment after when they're not looking I pounce!
And turn them into a vampire!!!

Bet ya didn't see that one coming

What would be more of a threat then turning their count back is putting a PS in big red letters on their profile!

Heh, I know what you mean, Lord Schaudt. I didn't even know there WAS a list.

Shows how much I know about this site.

:nose:

*sigh.* At least I have somewhat of a life. I got back to Cairo last night from Seattle after two transfers (one in Chicago, one in Frankfurt) and my bags lost me in Chicago.

I don't have very smart baggage.

That was rather off topic. My post count's like, 235 or something. I don't remember. The only time I even look at that now is in this thread (unless I happen to see it when I'm checking out their avatat-- which reminds me, nice one Cedric wherever you are).

*Achoo!*

I have a cold. Excuse me, I gotta go call a friend. It's eight in the morning and I don't know why I'm awake. I should be sleeping. Oh well.

I had a life today! I went shopping in Columbus (Ohio) at 2 different malls and after I got home ran out and spent the rest of the evening (8-11:30) with my two best buds. And THEN I came home and got on the computer. ;)

(Ravenclaw was in Kentucky, yay! Home state of one Johnny Depp)

LOL Chiana, I don't know if that's as much a threat.. it just looks like someone was writing a post script and forgot to finish what they were saying. ;)

P.S.: What part of the alphabet would look like without Q and R

Cedric
08-02-2003, 09:30 PM
Why thank you Rc :) Got a screen cap from samurai jack, then cropped it and took it into PhotoShop for some color adjustment.

Wait wait... There's a list?? And what, only the mods can see it? Craaaaaazy....

Kristin

I don't think there's a list that only mods can see.

I valued my post count at Imladris. Not because of the number, but because of what it represented: how much time I had spent around this community and how much it meant to me. So I was bummed when I lost my post count, but I quickly got over it. And now it means nothing to me. What is important is that I've been around here for three years and I've never wanted to leave (something that has always happened with other sites I've been on). :)

I suppose that on other sites the real reason post count matters is just a matter of being noticed. If you post 10 posts here, chances are, many member will have seen and read your posts -- so they have an idea of who you are. If you've posted 10 posts on some of the huge discussion sites, chances are that a couple of people (at best) have noticed you. So you need to post a lot more before others start to recognize your name. (Conversely, you yourself will best recognize the most prolific posters.)

It's lovely that here at the MI, people with 80 posts are as known as people with 1,000 posts.

Colli

Kristin,

Beautiful sentiments, and I totally agree.

(I was really upset when I lost my 2500 posts at Imladris, but I'm over it, too)

I can't leave this place, it's too awesome! I hope I can keep up at least SOME posting (I'll definitely make sure to keep up my modding) at college this year. :D

Could be worse, Schaudt: spouse and I just spent a few days on the coast of Maine... to scatter his grandparents' ashes :( That in itself wouldn't have been quite so bad except that it of course meant spending several days in the company of the entire family at once. I've never been a very social person, and spending my time alternating between consoling weepy in-laws and wondering if they think I'm some sort of cold fish because I'm not still weepy months and years after spouse's grandparents' actual deaths does not help. spouse's reactions to the whole event were pretty similar to mine, right down to wanting to enjoy what we could of our time on the coast... and being quite pleased to find a restaurant that offered free use of 'net to everyone eating there, so we could at least check our email and the news even if there wasn't time for me to check in here. :)

Genuine Landmarks (like 100 posts, or anniversary of registration) are worthy of a celebration, and we discourage no-one from celebrating these

What we dont want is someone celebrating their 273 posts
