Can i just ask do haikus have to have a pattern of 5, 7, 5 or do they just have to have 17 beats?

I'm no haiku expert, but I always thought it was 5,7,5 myself, so that's what I'm gonna stick with!

Yeah, it's supposed to be 5-7-5 exactly, and think I've heard that ideally the first word should be something "natural" (like the leaves in Xaz' haiku :)) though I can't recall where.

I'll probably spend all day tomorrow thinking about Snape haiku when I really ought to be concentrating on drainpipes. Thanks. ;)
