Neville!!!!
Oh little Neville has become big Neville!!!
Absolutely adorable, even as a stumbling clumsy fellow!!!

It's odd hearing the post puberty voices, but it more how I hear it in my head.

I barely recognized Tom Felton's voice! Especially when he wasn't in the shot while he was speaking. I did like the hair change though. :)

Yes... They have grown so much...

I'm actually worried about them... I'm weirdly protective like that :o

As with most child stars... They'll live fast and die young... It could be Drew Barrymore and James Dean all over again!

Fleur, I really think you needn't worry about that in their case. These kids have something very different from the others, they are down to earth kids. Who are still living regular lives off screen with their families. LOL, they are still taking final exams like all of us.

These kids are going to turn out okay :)

Just saw the movie last night. I didn't recognize Neville for the longest time. I thought they'd replaced him, or introduced another character. I kept trying to figure out which character he was supposed to be.:p

The rest were pretty much the same; they just seem to get better at their roles. I would really hate to see anyone else play their parts, even if they're 25 by the time they do book 7.:p Of course, the kids may decide to move on themselves by then.

Only bad thing was there wasn't enough of them! It felt like no one besides the trio had more than two minutes onscreen. I can understand why in terms of movietelling, but it's a shame, really.

I still cannot get over how the chap who played Neville has matured physically, I saw a photograph of him before I saw the film. so I was a bit prepared, but still it's surprising. Like seeing my little cousin is now taller than I, with a deep voice. :p

Several sites (and magazines) quoted Emma Watson's "And in the third film, Hermione finally gets to wear jeans!" remark.

Now, my pervy brat brother is waiting to hear "And in the seventh film, Hermione finally gets to wear Daisy Duke shorts!"

Git.

Draco? Of course he looks evil!! In the first two he looked plainly like a whimp. Goodness, he looks much better evil.

I couldn't recognise Neville it took me about 15 minutes after getting the first glimpse of him that it actually was Neville. I thought he was some fifth year or something...

was it just me that had absolutely no idea who the random black kid was (i'm not being racist, he was actually black as night)

and was i also the only one who nearly wet myself with laughter when he said "black could be anywhere"

But now he acts more like a wimp...

I like the way Matthew Lewis' development matches the development of Neville which I saw in the books.

PS/CoS: childlike, chubby and bungling

PoA/GoF: everyone (including himself) is used to thinking of him as childlike, chubby and bungling, but he's quietly growing

OotP: everyone (including himself) gets a surprise when he finally starts asserting himself

Totally with you there, lithorose. I feel quite concerned about the talk that's being bandied about about the kids being replaced in Film 5 by younger actors. Watching the kids grow into their roles has been one of the main pleasures of the films.

The difference in their voices, stature and features was the most marked we have seen so far. I think they have done the majority of their maturing between Films 2 and 3, and it really won't matter any more that they aren't playing their characters' ages any more - it didn't do the aged 30+ cast of Grease any harm to be playing high school kids, did it?!! :D I don't think the HP kids will look and sound much different from now on in, so they should keep the current cast.

I think of it this way - which would be harder to achieve:

a) 21-year-old Dan & Emma & Rupert playing 17-year-old Harry & Hermione & Ron, with the help of makeup and costuming and hairstyling and camera angles to assist their acting four years younger than themselves, or

b) three random 17-year-olds playing 17-year-old Harry & Hermione & Ron, with the help of makeup and costuming and hairstyling and camera angles to assist their acting like Dan & Emma & Rupert?

I'd really like to see the current actors/esses stay of screen, but it would be impossible. Not that I wouldn't mind seeing how they all turned out as adults, and I would get to see the Hermione/Ron shipping I read about all the time in fanfics:o

It will be soo odd when they do change the roles, I don't think people will be able to adjust. I don't think I'll be able to. Heck, I nearly passed out when I saw Flitwick's makeover in PoA. ;)

Sorry, but why would it be impossible?? Most films that have high school age characters in them have 20-something actors playing those characters. I think it would be MUCH more of a shock to have entirely different actors playing the main kids than to have the current actors, albeit slight older than they're supposed to be, playing them.

IŽd very much prefer they kept the actors. They will be older than their alter egos until film 7 finally can be done. But I really prefer a 20+ year old Dan, rupert, Emma to completly new actors. Their maturing and developing from kid to adult is a real pleasure to watch and makes the film much more realistic. Keep them, thats way better than new faces and voices.

It can be a real handicap for actors having to come in and play parts which have really been 'owned' by others. To me, this isn't a situation like James Bond films, where people watch for all the glamour and special effects, people identify the actors with the characters now. Once the kids have done the difficult part and passed through the worst of puberty, they won't change dramatically (hence Percy doesn't really look that different, cos he's already been there and got the t-shirt).

Look how hamstrung Ewan McGregor has been in the Star Wars films - having to act as if he was really Alec Guinness. He gets slated for a rotten performance, because he's not able to make the part his own, because it's a pre-owned part with audiences already associating someone else with the character.

After all that, you may guess that I'm hoping the actors will be willing to hang in there until HP7 has been filmed. All we need now is JKR to speed up writing the final 2 books :D

FWIW, JKR mentions on her official site that she would love for the trio to stay throughout the seven films.

Incidentally, this implies that none of the trio die in book 6.

Well, if they did keep the actors they have now, I would be thrilled beyond belief, don't get me wrong. :)

That implication, if it were certian, would put many of my woes to rest. :D
