I can't believe I didn't think of this before.

Fan fiction is a pretty recent phenomenon, and it's usefulness and enjoyability is debatable in many people's minds. For some, it's the dregs of the internet, for others, a nascent literature all its own, and for still others, a chance to cut their teeth on writing. It's been said that fan fiction is a whole new way of interacting with the stories and universes created through movies, books, and games. A chance for the people to give back and participate in the stories they love. But others insist it's a parasitic habit that has no use except the demeaning of an author's work.

So, this thread is for anything interesting you find, any articles you may find, be they critical of or in praise of fan fiction. I'm going to start it off with an interesting essay by G.K. Chesterton, called A Defense of Penny Dreadfuls (http://www.dur.ac.uk/martin.ward/gkc/books/penny-dreadfuls.html). It's not specifically about fan fiction, but it's close enough that I think it applies. It is, as the title suggests, a defense of vulgar literature and its place in common society.

Feel free to add anything useful whenever you find it, remembering of course to keep all external links PG. (If you find a great article that you can't link to, copy the body of it into the thread, making any necessary edits).:)
