I was skimming through MuggleNet and I found this, If you haven't read Goblet of Fire or don't want to be spoiled, please do not read the following-
I used to work with a movie review site, and still get reports from some people who think I still do work there. Nowadays I don't use them, but this one I thought I would pass onto you. It contains MAJOR SPOILERS on the upcoming GOF film. My contact got about a half hour alone with a script while doing some work connected with the film. She didn't get to read it through and through, obviously, but got to do a good look of what's in and what's not. Here's a breakdown: (BEGIN SPOILERS) What's been cut: the SPEW storyline altogether, opening scene with the Dursleys, the Hogwarts express (there are shots of it, but nothing in the train,) and the wand weighing. What's still in: Creepy opening scene with Voldemort, Wormtail and Nagini. The Dark Mark scene, the "Potter Stinks" bit, the skrewts, the horntail challenge, the merpeople challenge (should be very cool!) The final challenge, although the spider may NOT be in it. (My source didn't remember seeing it.) The Sphinx is in. So is Dobby and Winky, the Portkeys, Crouch freaking out, the Pensieve scene and Cedric's end. Things that are drastically cut: Yule Ball, Quidditch World Cup, Rita Skeeter stuff (she's in it, but not as much as the book,) Harry stressing over the egg clue, Snape scenes (he's not in it much,) Hagrid & Maxine love story (it's there, but just reduced to a few brief moments for humor,) Dumbledore's humor (again... they never get him right!) Note on the ending: they manage to get it all pretty much in, which is surprising given what's going on. END SPOILERS. I have to tell you, I was disappointed when I heard they cut this from two movies to one, but it sounds like they really pulled it off. The second challenge really acts as a mid-movie action sequence that should blow the doors off of a lot of what we've seen so far in the films. The final challenge also sounds amazing, and the ending should be really creepy. I know they say this with every movie, but this one could be really eerie (not just "dark") because of the very evil Voldemort scenes. Not sure what the young ones will think of it. This stands to do justice to the book, and be the best movie of the series! (And after Cuaron's work, that's saying something!)
So far, I think this movie is going S-U-C-K! First of all, Hermione is wearing a pink shirt, denim jacket, jeans and a messenger bag! (Sometimes I wonder if Emma Watson has read the books!) The Yule Ball is drastically cut, NO Weighing of the Wands and there is going to be a very small Qudditch World Cup sequence! Not to mention Hermione throws her arms around Harry is a scene before he fights the Hungarian Horntail! *SCREAMS IN HORROR*

The Weighing of the Wands? I'm sorry, but I really can't get worked up about this. It always struck me as somewhat pointless in the book. They'll find some way to establish that Fawkes's other feather is in Voldemort's wand.
The Yule Ball? Well, if you really want to wallow in the awkwardness of being a teenager.... It struck home with me, so I'd just as soon not have it emphasized. :D It doesn't serve much plot purpose, other than reveal Hagrid's big secret -- which can be revealed some other way (prolly in whichever movie in which the giant subplot finally becomes important).
LuthienElentari

I know The Weighing of the Wands and The Yule Ball are not important events compared to events like the Death Mark, but I found them extremely entertaining! I'll probably live if I don't see much of Ron's dress robes or Rita Skeeter stuffing Harry in a closet but the least they can do is put Hermione in clothes that her character would approve of! Hermione is not a fashionable know-it-all! for goodness sakes!

Everyone's got their favourite things, but this is a 600 page book, so of course there has to be cuts. Two movies were never going to be feasible - the movies have always been about just putting the HP story onto the screen, never about making quality movies, so why bother with two when you can have one? And Emma Watson ultimately isn't to blame for Hermione's clothes. Sure, she chose some of the stuff for POA, but if the producer didn't like it, he should've said so... I'm assuming that primary for Emma was "I get to wear my own clothes!" rather than "now what would Hermione wear?"...
Personally I think this doesn't sound too bad, although (and this flies in the face of what I've just said) I think that they should really either do the films properly or not do them at all. None of the three HP movies have been able to capture what it is that makes JKR's books so good, and only POA has been a decent movie IMO... so, sure, this'll be a chance to see GOF (majorly truncated) on the big screen, but really it'll just be a "greatest hits" of GOF moments like the other films. I honestly believe that we're going to see a return to the episodic "this happened, then this happened, then this happened" nature of the first and second films, which POA did pretty well to avoid for the most part, simply because it's so long and they're only showing the important bits.
What I think is most interesting is what JKR's allowed to be cut. No SPEW means that ultimately it's not going to be important, which knocks out a couple of theories for the last two books...
Telchar II
08-23-2004, 03:01 AM
I dunno. Does SPEW really establish anything other than what we already know even from movie CoS?
Also, I think PoA actually came quite close to capturing JKR's madcap sensibility.
Pilgrim Grey
08-23-2004, 10:56 AM
Personally I don't really think SPEW establishes anything, but there were a few theories in Lit IIRC about the importance of it (people saying that JKR must've known that it was unpopular, but she continued it into OOTP, so it must be important)...
And maybe it's just a personal thing, but POA just didn't feel like HP to me. Although it was a decent film, I think the colour palatte was way out - I don't think there shouldv'e been that much green. That probably sounds incredibly stupid and nitpicky, but IMO the colours used go a long way to establishing the tone. It's kinda like how the first two films were way too bright... IMO there should be more earthy colours (this probably stems from the fact that my first introduction into HP was GOF, and the cover of that pretty much summed up for me what HP should look like)

I loved the colour palatte in Prisoner of Azkaban! The colours in Prisoner Of Azkaban fit to the mood of the film and had a natural feeling, where as the colours in the first too films felt fake and over dramatic.

Yeah, like I said, it's probably more a personal thing, but IMO this:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~janetmck/bookaweek/books_pics/gobletoffire.jpg
Is what the colour scheme should be - the soft reds/browns... And the small image of the interior of the castle on the back of the book just cemented that image for me...

 Yule Ball and S.P.E.W are being reduced/cut
SPEW is important, important for Hermione's character! She is developing a political conscience, not fashion sense! This is so maddenning!
In the books, Hermione is a strong, political activist, she's clever, and HIDES behind books because she's insecure! She is not going to start wearing pretty pink clothes and not trying to make the house elves free!
That makes me so mad! Who can relate to that? Annoying eleven year olds just starting secondary school who are trying to impress the boys?!
And the Yule Ball was meant to show how Hermione can be pretty, she's not just a bookworm, then of course there's the infamous Ron/Hermione argument! Thr first cold stab of jealousy!
And Snape! And Rita Skeeter! We need some entertainment! Rita Skeeter's character is The British Tabloid Journalist.
I'm not really that attacted to GoF as I am too PoA and OotP because Remus isn't in it :p And I don't have to worry about that anymore...
I have to agree with you Pilgrim, I think GoF should have a soft reddish brown colour scheme. The whole imagery of fire - dragons, the goblet. The golds from the egg, and from Christmas...
I'm really worried about this one... They've messed up Hermione's character...

Exactly! I don't care if Emma Watson wants to look like Hilary Duff! Hermione is NOT Hilary Duff! Therefore take those pretty clothes your wearing and give them to a homeless shelter! You have already turned my guyfriends into gaping idiots! That's already taken care of! Now off with that pink crap! If you really want, stop over to my house, I have plenty of unfashionable clothes you could borrow!
They have destryoyed Hermione! *groans* If this continues Hermione will be wearing a Spice Girl T-shirt in Order of the Pheonix! and maybe one of those punk bracelets to top off the look!
In the book, Ron and Harry are shocked at Hermione's beauty! how can they be shocked by Hermione if she already is a
beautiful, fashionable know-it-all!

And the Hermione at the ball scene will definitely still be in IMO, because they've been overemphasising the Ron/Hermione thing in all three movies, and without the reveal there's not really much use for the scene (other than Moody seeing Harry's socks, although that could be made up very easily).
Who the heck is Hilary Duff? And why is it a problem that Hermoine dresses like her?
When I was 14-18, only the geeky girls wore pink. And everyone, including the geeky girls, wore jeans and often jean jackets. That was about 1991-1995, so it seems to fit for Hermy and the HP timeline.
I think that the Yule Ball is not very important for the entire 7 book story arc, and thought it would be cut. And the World Cup itself could be cut, if the Dark Mark scene could be moved. I wouldn't like that, but all of GoF can be streamlined into a movie. There is a lot of superfluous information, that works well in a book but wouldn't in a movie.
And all I can say about SPEW is... I hope it is gone. It's an annoying storyline. Hermoine's character is well established without it.
Pilgrim Grey

Wow, Irys, you don't know who Hillary Duff is? I thought everyone in the world would've been subjected to her by now. I'm impressed :D
She's a teenage TV star/movie star/singer who isn't actually all that hot (IMO anyway).http://www.pbclibrary.org/images/Duff-With-Daisy-Rock.jpg
The idea is that Hermione shouldn't be a pop starlet, so she shouldn't be wearing the clothes that she is (NOT EMMA'S FAULT!!)

Thats a really stupid shape for an electric guitar...
I just keep on thinking... Barbie...Barbie...
Huh, well, I certainly can't imagine Hermione dressed like that. :) But she's also not in pink... ;)
I still maintain the pink is a color that only nerdy girls wore in the first half of the 90s (unless they were under 10 years old). Wearing pink just screams nerdy Hermione to me, but I guess I'm old. :p
Wow, now that I REALLY think about it, I'm only 1-2 years older than Harry and Co., in the present day. They would all be old like me. ;)

Well, at least the Pensive Scene is in. *tries desperately to hold onto some shred of hope*
Ron and Hermione's characters have both been messed up beyond recognition. Ron agreeing with Snape when he called Hermy a know-it-all? Hermy interfering with the past? I'm afraid that Mr. Kloves needs to reread his books, or hire some of us to help him write the screenplay. :)
Has there been any mention of the rift between Harry and Ron? Since they didn't do the argument between Ron and Hermy, it's doubtful that the Harry/Ron one is in too...:(
....And although that person doesn't mention it, Ludo Bagman is cut. Gone. Kapish. Which means a lot less Fred/George.
*tries to refrain from saying a very bad word* ........FUDGESICLES!!!!!!!!

I agree completely, Ron is portrayed by Steve Kloves as the comic relief and when he is not the comic relief, he is portrayed as an oblivious loser! Steve Kloves gives way too many lines to Hermione and uses her more often then Ron, even though Harry spends more time with Ron in the books.
I understand that Hermione is his favorite character, but that doesn't give him the right to completely ignore our beloved Ron Weasley!
I'm not even going to begin with the amount of damage they have put upon Hermione's character! Otherwise this post would be way too long.........

Actually, that's not meant to foreshadow H/Hr; it's part of the Rita subplot. Hermione gives Harry a perfectly innocent hug for luck just as Rita pops up with a photographer in tow and snaps a picture which she later uses to fabricate the false Harry/Hermione gossip.

*sigh* It's definitely going to be made - WB have the rights to all 7 books, but I have a feeling - and I'm sorry to sound like a pessimist here - that it's going to be the most dissappointing film so far. Think about it, it's a 750 page book, with very little narrative drive, so it's either going to get absolutely massacred, or it's goin to be a meandering, convoluted mess, IMO. Sure it's going to be cool, but I can't see it being any better than POA was. Make of that what you will.

That would be the "Draco Malfoy, the Amazing Bouncing Ferret" scene.
I'm thinking that, even though GoF has no chance of being a flop, if there is cosiderable negative feedback from fans and critics the studio may decide to relax its insistence on 2-hour time caps. An ill-received GoF might mean a properly-treated OotP.

And btw, Pilgrim Grey, I am totally with LuthienElentari on the quality of Cuaron's PoA. An amazing film -- absolutely amazing.

I can't wait to see the Yule Ball! I'm excited to see Ron's dress robes. My dad was reading GoF and he said "I feel bad for Ron.' I asked why and he said "Because all his stuff's second hand." Ron deserves a jillion beautiful dress robes. I don't like the character of Hermione in the movies. Mainly because of my jealousy of Emma Watson. Meh.

Franz Ferdinand for GoF?
NME is reporting that scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand ("Take Me Out", "Michael") have signed up to create music for Goblet of Fire and may even have a cameo role in the movie.
The band, who are currently touring the UK have been asked to take part in the project, with singer Alex Kapranos saying the band could play a “band of ugly sisters.” (Weird Sisters)
He told VH1: "We've been asked to write some music. There's a section where there's a band of ugly sisters playing and I think, well… some members of Franz Ferdinand may be the ugly sisters in the band."
Can anyone enlighten me as to who these people are?

They're "art-rock" :p "Music girls can dance too" and I have and its fun. :D
Imagine if they change the lyrics to Michael...
I'm so happy, you're so happy, so come and dance with me Cho Chang...
Or Jacqueline....
Winky was seventeen, working at her desk, when, something something... etc etc... I'm so drunk I dont mind if yeh kill me....!
They have my favourite lyric ever (from my favourite song) Darts of Pleasure:
You can feel my lips undress your eyes, undress your eyes... Skin can feel my lips they tingle tense anticipation, this one is an easy one, feel the word and melt upon it. Words of love and words so leisured, words are poisioned darts of pleasure.
So sexy :notworthy :swoon:
And from the song Michael (the sexualy ambigious one Pilgrim Grey was referring too) has very sexy lyrics... Something for all the slashers!
Michael you're the boy with all the leather hips, sticky hair sticky lips, stubble on my sticky lips. Beautiful boys on a beautiful dance floor, Michael dancing like a beautiful dance whore

Hmm, seems like you're just looking to get too much out of the music. FF are, in their own words, making music that girls can dance to. I wouldn't call them generic or soulless, but they're definitely not deep, which I think is what you're looking for. Which is great, but you shouldn't be comparing say, Vast, to FF. You want generic and soulless? Just look at all the Jack Johnson wannabes out there now (ironic looking at the roots of his music).

You forgot to mention the ugg boots the poseurs wear (or have you guys escaped that?)...
EDIT:
And it seems Franz aren't the only new thing happening musically in GOF: (From Dark Horizons)
Whilst John Williams may be seeing his "Superman" theme getting a revival, his "Harry Potter" tunes seem to be going the way of the dodo.
Jarvis Cocker is set to write the soundtrack for the next film - the currently shooting "Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire" according to recent reports in British tabloid The Sun. Movie bosses apparently wanted a trendy British musician to score the new film rather than utilising stalwart John Williams.
The good news is that Cocker was the top choice by the various cast, including Radcliffe for the job. A film insider says: "He is a very talented musician who is a big fan of movies and knows exactly how they work. You may just think Jarvis is the bloke in specs who fronted Pulp but he is a man with many hidden depths".

I suppose the 'British' actors' pension fund' (as some have called these movies :D ) now also extends to some musicians :D

I thought Lord Of The Rings was the British actors pension fund?;) :D

Unfortunatly not... They've been gracing the feet of celebrities for the past year... They dont seem to realise how stupid they look. If you want comfy shoes, a nice pair of Converses is fine. Same height on your leg too...
This season, every highstreet shop has been making their own rip-off version of them... Noticed them today... Also actually noticed them on the feet of girls wearing floaty skirts and fur gillets. The wore the wrong clothes for the weather. Pissing down and very windy. Idiots
Jarvis Cocker... "Muggle People" ;)

The worst thing is that Aussies have been wearing them (strictly in the home, they're kinda the guilty secret of every single Australian person) for years, and now fashion companies are trying to copyright them! They're not fashion, they're warm boots that you wear around the home in winter damnit!!

Very few posers at Franz Ferdinand gig last night ;) Although I was crushed at the front so could only see Franz Ferdinand in their orange delight.
Their new stuff is great, so have faith in them! "I'm Your Villan" and "This Boy" are particulary good. I still cant believe they're doing music for the film....

Just look at all the Jack Johnson wannabes out there now (ironic looking at the roots of his music).
this is my trouble. i cant dance to it, it has no... rhythm? its just like twangy guitar noises to me. mebbe comparing Vast to FF is a bit unfair, and maybe comparing Justin Timberlake to them would be unfair as well as again its not the same genre, but i can dance to JT. However, Pabolo Honey (thats Radiohead's first album... well kinda) is kind of on the same page. but its got soul. and what about Electric Six?
hang on, thats it. Electric Six as the Weird Sisters. now THAT would have been an ingenious casting decision.

You can have a history lesson with FF! All For You Sophia is all about Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assination... And Love & Destory is about a novel...
Anyway... I dont need music to have meaning... That just sounds pretentious ;) When I'm happy I want to listen to happy music and music that reminds me of good times. Like Toxic gives me memories of dancing with gay men and Franz Ferdinand makes me think of 30th Oct when nothing mattered that night.
If I'm in a bad !!!!ty mood I'll listen to the Smiths.
I do vary more... But recently I've been on a Franz & Smiths wavelength. I wont listen to anything else... :o
Haha but yes... Electric Six would be funny...

FIRE IN THE GREAT HALL, FIRE IN THE GREAT HALL
LETS START A WAR. START A MAGICAL WAR. AT ABERFORTH'S BAR, ABERFORTH'S BAR, ABERFORTH'S BAR
now you cant say that wouldn't be great. i cant think of a parody for Dance Commander, but lets be honest here that song goes with anything.

Bad news.
Bad bad bad bad bad bad news.
Franz Ferdinand best band that are alive in the world today (in my humble opinion) have pulled out of appearing in Harry Potter... Instead Mr Cocker and Johnny something from Radiohead will be the Weird Sisters (the nme article spelt Weird Sisters as Wyrd Sisters gah.)
They've still written some music though... Still not good enough. I love them.
It hasnt been confirmed by Warner Bros.
I wrote a load of Harry Potter/Franz Ferdinand parady songs... All For You Death Eaters... Mr Filch... Remus... And so on :)
xxxxx if anyone is interested!

Yes Johnny Greenwood... Its not exactly Nick McCarthy Sex on Guitar though... He is like number four in nme's cool list. I dont care about the list. But Nick is in it... *sigh*
Maybe Franz were just too pretty to be Weird Sisters :p

Iche trincke potion mit giant squid...
Or something. I'm sure yours are better than that Fleur :D
And I don't even know German, so I've probably spelled those wrong too (I still think those lines are the funniest thing I've ever heard, especially in the context of the song)

FWIW, I personally thought that Miranda Richardson was a little too classy to play Rita Skeeter, but I've just seen the photo of her in Premiere magazine (via the Net) and the hair really does it - she does indeed look like a tabloid-trash journalist. Throw in the right accent and she'll be just perfect.

I thought so, too, Bellatrix. At first I was drawn back by the blonde hair, but I think she'll grow on me! : :raspberry
