I'm still hacking my way through these books by Charlie Fletcher.
They've been optioned for a movie as well.
In short, they're about a kid in London who accidentally starts a war between the spits and the taints (statues vs. soulless carvings).
It's darker than most kid fare, and there's almost nonstop peril for the two kids involved; (so not recommended for younger kids) although they pick up some unlikely allies along the way. The majority of the action takes place over a very short space of time, so its not really like an extended quest. More like '24' for the magical set.
Pretty good read, overall. As a movie, I could see it being done, but it would have limited appeal for anyone who's never been to London and seen some of the statues and the edifices they belong to. having been in various parts of the city, and seen some of the statues/carvings described (or similar) I have a good picture in my head of how they might look in action.
It's a clever premise.
