Chapter to Movie 7A & 7B

There's been a lot of divergence from book canon by the films, so I thought it might be fun to track this chapter by chapter.


As we draw closer to the release of the first film of the set, I've seen a lot of pictures surrounding Ron, Harry & Hermione on the run, as well as a glimpse or two of the second film with the final duel with Voldemort.

So far, I've seen pictures that equate with Chapter #1-4

Chapter One - The Dark Lord Ascending

I've seen some random pics of Voldemort and the Death Eaters that equate to this chapter

Chapter Two - In Memorium

I think this chapter will be mostly written out fo the first film, or it can be dispensed with in a couple of quick scenes.

Chapter Three - The Dursleys Departing

I wonder how much of this we'll see. The Dursleys are sort of important as a link to the muggle world, but I haven't seen anything that equates to this scene in pictures or commentary. The cast is listed for the Dursleys.

Chapter Four - The Seven Potters
where Harry escapes (there's the motorcycle scene captured in pictures)

What other evidence have we seen of the chapters?

Unfourtunately in Australia I have seen only one trailer and then just about 10 seconds of, so I cant comment except to look at what has happened in previous movies.

I am expecting once again to have quite a bit missing from the books but these have made the movies watchable so I am going to be ok with the changes

Skipping ahead a bit:

Chapter 29: The Missing Diadem

I was watching HP6 again to track some of the changes they've made over the last couple of films. The way they hid the book in the Room of Requirement has Ginny hiding it. This probably means that she will have to help Harry when he's searching for the Diadem.

Since they've also made little use of the ghosts in any of the later films, I don't know if they will even use the Grey Lady at all as a clue to the Diadem's whereabouts. Presumably, Harry and/or Ginny will remember seeing it in the RoR. How they will engineer these scenes I can only speculate.

given that JKR is/was such a good plotter, it's a shame they can't keep her tight-ish interweaving, because you can be certain that whatever the screenplay bods come up with will be much weaker.

I just wonder what they're going to have to add back in about the horcruxes. They just barely informed Harry about them in the last film. Seems he'll be off on his quest without a lot of key information. Of course, they can pick up clues along the way, but with Dumbledore gone, how will he be able to follow the trail?

I think this was a problem with the books too, wasn't it? Hmmm - may have to watch the last movie again...

Key issues:

They deviated from the way Harry follows the trail to the Diadem. First, they've never done anything with the Gray Lady, and second, Ginny hides the book, so how does Harry remember the old diadem on top of the bust in the Room of (junk) Requirement? I guess you can write around it. Now with the Hufflepuff Goblet, they could learn about that from the 'prisoners of Malfoy' episode that is in the film.

But it's the whole start of the trail where Harry sees the memory about the the Riddle Ring. They dispensed with that whole story by simply tossing the thing into Dumbledore's desk with the diary.

Since Harry doesn't get back to the school until film 2, allegedly, how's he going to connect the dots to that item?

Do you know if they have ms Rowling helping out with the writing? A plotter like that would take care of any and all little difficulties. It's not that hard to write around such things, but it almost certainly will be a great deal more clunky in its execution and will contrast badly with the deep-laid plans of mice, men and JKR.

I don't think she's directly involved, but Steve Kloves was brought back after a hiatus on HP 5. He's pretty much her 'chosen screenplay guy' for most of the films. I'm sure she consults with him.

This first scene was almost exactly as the book described, with the Malfoys looking very scared, and the death of the Muggle Studies Professor

And it was, mostly...

Chapter Three - The Dursleys Departing

They didn't do any Dursley interaction, and the explanation of why they were convinced to leave it left up to the moviegoer if they've never read the books.

Chapter Four - The Seven Potters

This was a good scene and I liked that Hedwig took an active part in the escape/defense of Harry. That 'death of Hedwig' was actually a better reason why they zeroed in on the real Harry. The book's idea that he used expelliarmus instead of killing/blasting spells was rather weak.
