The Harry Potter Books are so darn funny, but what, in your opinion, are the funniest moments?

"As they entered Lockhart`s darkened office there was a flurry of movement across the walls; Harry saw several of the Lockharts in the pictures dodging out of sight, their hair in rollers."
Priceless!:D

this isn't the funniest thing, but I always think of it, and it always makes me laugh for some stupid reason....
In the first book on Christmas morning when Harry says "I've got presents" and Ron says "What'd you expect, turnips?"....:rotfl:....

In the third book, when Harry is receiving the maurader's map...I can't remember the exact words but it has to do with Fred and George being 'young and innocent.'
In the first book I also love when one of the Weasleys hits a bludger at Snape...Funny!

I like in Goblet of Fire when Hermione is complaining about the girls who are all swooning over Krum and comments that she would never go crazy over someone just because they were good looking and Ron kind of coughs the word "Lockhart"
Fleur

Yeah that one is funny, Katia!
I have always loved Mafoy the Amazing Bouncing Ferret!
And... The bit where the letter from the Weaslys is totally covered with stamps! lol!

The part, when Fred (or was it George?), when asked who he was taking to the ball in GoF, replies, "Angelina", is asked, "what, you've already asked her?", says, "Good point. Oi! Angelina! Wanna go to the ball with me?":rotfl:

The books are all the way on my desk (I'm such a lazy git sometimes), so I'll just talk about characters who always get me, and then go for specifics later...
Lee Jordan calling the Quidditch matches cracks me up (esp. when Prof. McGonagall tries to rein him in).
Lockhart, of course... :D
Fred and George kill me. I see so much of some of my friends in them...it's quite scary! ;)

Lol, I crack up all the time in these books. I find it funny that after reading them like 10 times, I still find myself rolling on the floor. Anyways...
Y'all have already mentioned some that I was thinking of:
Anula's "turnips" one. Lol, that Ron is just so darn sarcastic!
Fleur's "amazing bouncing ferret". Ha ha, boing!
one elven girl said my probably 2nd favorite! "OI! Angelina!" Lol, I so know some people who would do that! Those twins are hilarious!
Now for one of my favs. In Book 1, they've just dropped into the Devil's Snare. (I don't have my book with me so some of this is probably off)
"Ok, I know what this is. Devil's Snare... it likes dark, damp places." "Then light a fire!" "Right! But I don't have any matches!" "ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT??????"
I LOVE IT! Ron is my favorite character so I'm probably a bit biased but he is so funny! I was so sad that they didn't have those lines in the movie! I was looking forward to the magnificent Rupert saying them! :rotfl:

OO OO...I HAVE to join in!!
From Sorcerer's: Harry recieves a sweater from Mrs. Weasley
"You haven't got a letter on yours,"George observed. "I suppose she thinks you don't forget your name. But we're not stupid - we know we're called Gred and Forge."
From CoS :
The bit about the garden gnomes... "Geroff me! Geroff me!"
("Dad's too soft with them; he thinks they're funny....")
Come see me in the Dragon of Bad Faith thread!!!

 I should've written them down last time I reread the books.
I *love* it when Dudley eats the echanted Toffee and his tongue swells up.. that entire scene is hilarious.

There are many scenes where the humour is obvious - I love them all.
And gotta love the bouncing ferret :p :D

I liked when Lockhart draped the whole dining hall in pink for Valentine's Day, and Snape sat there looking "like someone just fed him a whole bottle of Skele-Grow." I can just see that face!

i think anything between Ron and Hermione is funny...i really thought that the Scabbers-Crookshanks incident in Gryffindor Tower was hilarious, even though it was suppose to be serious. i just loved it!
i also thought that scene in the Dueling Club when Draco accidentally enlarged Hermione's front teeth was funny. i never imagined Hermione to have big front teeth until that spell hit her. too bad it wasn't included in the CoS movie :(

Funny moment in CoS
Ron throwing up slugs and Hagrid steering him away from his pumpkins
in Prisoner of Azkaban
Hermione's worst fear revealed during Lupin's final exam: failing all her classes!
in GoF
The whole Hagrid-Madame Olympe exchange, with M. Olympe saying that she's "just big-boned"
There's no way I can possibly remember all of my favorite scenes, so how about the one I reread last night.
The first Divination class, in dead pan voices:
"Right, you've got a crooked sort of cross... that means you're going to have 'trials and suffering'-- sorry about that-- but there's a thing that could be the sun... hang on... that means 'great happiness'... so you're going to suffer but be very happy..."
And I love Sir Cadogan.:D
Sirius Black
12-07-2002, 08:45 PM
Yeah - Sir Cadogan! :D "Draw your swords - you Knaves!" He's grande!
I also really liked Fred and George leading Harry through the corridor "Make way! Seriously evil wizard coming through!"
It's in such a gloomy period in the book, so it's worth double the laughs.

hehehe...Sir Cadogan: "Stand and fight, you mangy cur!" :D
Archie the wizard's hilarious too: "I like a healthy breeze 'round my privates, thanks."

I :trout: myself for not getting this the first 7 or 8 times I read Goblet of Fire. Because I don't hear the words in my head, I don't pick up on jokes like this. :o ;) Nevertheless, I was SHOCKED when I saw it for the "first time"!!! :D
Lavendar Brown: "Oh Professor look! I think I found an unaspected planet! Oooh, which one's that, Professor?"
"It is Uranus my dear." said Professor Trelawney peering down a the chart.
"Can I have a look at Uranus too, Lavender?" said Ron. :rotfl:
And you can't forget:
"Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business."
"Mr. Prongs agrees with Mr. Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git."
"Mr. Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a professor."
 Poor Snape.
The whole Archie thing I found incredibly immature and unneccesary. I don't know why, but I cringe whenever I read that part.

LOL I was trying to explain.... delicately. ;)
I knew the problem was either
a) you just didn't pick up on it (like me)
b) You pronounce "Uranus" differently (some people do, they emphasize the Ur "Yer" and then pronounce the "a" softly.)
or
c) You had no idea what one of those was. ;) I couldn't remember if you're originally FROM Finland, or what. I was trying to be nice. :D

 Thought of another one last night. I can just picture Uncle Vernon's face...
"It's a letter from my godfather... he was my mum and dad's best friend. He's a convicted murderer, but he's broken out of wizard prison and he's on the run. He likes to keep in touch with me, though... keep up with my news... check if I'm happy..."

Anything that happens in Divination cracks me up ("Am I right in assuming you were born in mid-winter?" "nope, July" ) but the part that always has me on the floor is in GOF in the Burrow:

Ahhh... the humor of the books... something the film has failed to capture so far.... tragic.
I also like Dumbledore's 'twinkling' irony, especially when he's trying hard not to lie ;): Hospital wing, after Hermione and Harry just used the time tuner and Snape is in there, fuming - "Severus, unless you want to suggest that Harry and Hermione are capable of being in two different places at the same time, you are on the wrong track"

From GoF, chp. 21, The House Elf Liberation Front:
Don't you go upsetting them and telling them they've got to take clothes and salaries!" said Fred warningly. You'll put them off their cooking!"
Just then, Neville caused a slight diversion by turning into a large canary.
:rotfl:
For some reason I find this incredibly hysterical.:D

The toilet seat "haunting" in PS - in the begining where Weasleys discuss- Mrs. says to twins that they shouldn't blow up toilets or anything, and when the train leaves twins threathen to send a Hogwarts toilet seat to Ginny...
and when it comes back in the end with Harry's speech with Dumbledore - Weasley's twins had sent him a toilet seat, but Madam Pomfrey didn't thought it was hygienical and consatificatited(sp/word?) it....
That's hilarious :p
Colli

A couple of my favourites from Snape:
'Professor,' drawled Malfoy, 'Weasley's mutilating my roots, sir.'
Snape approached their table, stared down his hooked nose at the roots, then gave Ron an unpleasant smile from beneath his long, greasy black hair.
'Change roots with Malfoy, Weasley.'
Pansy Parkinson and the other Slytherin girls were doubled up with silent giggles, pointing at Hermione from behind Snape's back.
Snape looked coldly at Hermione, then said, 'I see no difference.'

Sorry, didn't mean to bring a sour tone to this thread. I have a very dry, twisted sense of humour. I kind of feel sorry for Hermione, but I find it funny as well. I couldn't ever hate Snape no matter what he said or did.
On a lighter note one part that really makes me laugh that I couldn't find the other day is:
'Oh are you a Prefect, Percy?' said one of the twins with an air of great surprise. 'You should have said something, we had no idea.'
'Hang on, I think I remember him saying something about it,' said the other twin. 'Once-'
'Or twice-'

'All summer-'

One of my favourite funny parts in CoS when Harry and Ron are looking in the window at the Great Hall and guessing at why Snape isn't there...
"Maybe he's left," said Harry "because he's missed out on the Defense Against the Dark Arts job again!"
"Or he might have been sacked!" said Ron enthusiastically "I mean, everyone hates him---"
"Or maybe," said a very cold voice from right behind them, "he's waiting to hear why you two didn't arrive on the school train."
I do so love Severus's sense of humour.

This thread hasn't been posted to in a while. So I thought I would add one of my current favorite "funny" scenes.
In GoF, at the "Dance", Ron is fuming over Hermione being w/ Viktor Krum, and she sits at the table, and Ron starts going off on her...(not quoting, as my book is at home and I'm here at work)
"Oh, Hi Vicky!" "Vicky this, Vicky that".
I think it's funny since Vicky is a girls name, but what's more (and ding me if this isn't PG enough), I make the connection between the name Vicky and the Prison tour guide in "So I Married an Axe Murderer" (Michael Meyers, mid 90's)...starts talking about the bad prisoners and says something about having a love flame and calling him "Vicky"....just too funny!
I sincerely Doubt Ron was aware of that, although, according to the timeline, he could have, since most events happened in 1994, 1995, etc, I think (correct me if I'm wrong!).
Also, I love the Dobby Socks from GoF and the socks Dobby makes for Harry..too cute!

It's time to resurrect this classic. :)
Despite darker tone and the tragic death of OotP (honestly, they should've called it "Harry Potter and the Order of the Kleenex") ... there were also some really, REALLY funny moments.
I had to stop reading when I was crying over the Death. But I also had to stop reading once because I was laughing so hard:
"Better wizards than you have lost buttocks!"
"Who do you know who's lost a buttock?"
:rotfl: My pick for funniest moment. Wow! That bit of dialogue just cracks me up!

I agree, Kristin, that's a great line.:D
For some reason I also just cracked up when Uncle Vernon kept called the Dementors "Dementoids" and "Demenders" and "Demembers." It just gave some humor to such a strange Dursley moment.
There were quite a few funny moments, though that's all I can think of for now...

Kreacher wasn't quite as devoted to him as to my mother, but I still caught him snogging a pair of father's old trousers last week."
i'm sure that everyone will know right away who uttered these delightful words:
Moronic enough that some of this class undoubtedly are, I expect you to scrape an 'acceptable' in your O.W.L., or suffer my...displeasure.
i thought this was funny despite the tense moment:
"And as for who's going to look after Ron and Ginny if you and Arthur died," said Lupin, smiling slightly, "what do you think we'd do, let them starve?"
how about a Fred and/or George moment?
Ron held up his badge.
Mrs. Weasley let out a shriek just like Hermione's.
"I don't believe it! I don't believe it! Oh Ron, how wonderful! A prefect! That's everyone in the family!"
"What are Fred and I, next-door neighbors?" said George indignantly, as his mother pushed him aside and flung her arms around her youngest son.

I love Moony :D
'D'you think you managed to get all the signs?' said James in tones of mock concern.
'Think I did,' said Lupin seriously, as they joined the crowd thronging around the front doors eager to get out into the sunlit grounds. 'One: he's sitting on my chair. Two: he's wearing my clothes. Three: his name's Remus Lupin.'
His heart swelled with happiness and relief, and he felt like joining in as they heard Sirius tramping past their door towards Buckbeak's room, singing 'God Rest Ye, Merry Hippogriffs' at the top of his voice.
And of course:
'Who's Cedric - your boyfriend?'

I was discussing this with my sister today at work, I wanted to share it with everyone.
I find it humorous when Hermione explains to ron and Harry how girls are. For example, she explains things a girl doesn't come right out and say(involving Cho). Ron and Harry find girls completely boggling.
I'd look up quotes, but its rather late. So you'll have to bear with the examples
I find this really humorous, and J.K. Rowling has the teenage boy pegged. Most of my friends are guys, i have to explain stuff to them. They have the exact same reaction as Ron did.
"WEll....thats just......missed the point completely!"
or
"What? Well thats just stupid, why would they act like THAT?!'

This is a paraphrase, forgive me if I'm a little off:
Harry and Ron have just struggled through their Divination OWLs, and Ron says:

I also really like the "love-affair" with Ron and Hermione. You can't say there's nothing going on with them... or at least Ron... ex:
"Vicky?"
His reaction when hermy does something like kiss him on the cheek, etc.
I don't know if it's just me... but it always seems if Hermy starts looking too interested in harry, Ron has to bud in.
:rotfl: i just crack if i see a part like that!
Like talking about Chos kiss - hermione teling Harry, of course you are not a bad kisser and Ron very sharply how do you know

when mcgonagall told peeves that the chandelier unscrews the other way. ...
when lupin drags sirius back down and insists, "if anyone's going to talk to snape, it will be me". ...
in azkaban, it was crazy when sirius was letting snape's head hit the ceiling of the tunnel leading out of the shrieking shack. ...

I'm kind of torn on the "Hem,hem!" of Umbridge. At first it was irritating, but like Pilgrim Grey said, it was hilarious the way McGonagal starting reacting to it. I don't have OOTP in front of me, but the line where McGonagal asked Umbridge if she didn't need a throat lozenge or something to that effect, was gangbusters! :D
And I concur with Colli, from one of her way earlier posts, the scene where Dudley eats the candy that makes his tongue engorged, after Fred and George "accidentally" drop it. Hilarious!

Here's one of my favorite bits, the introduction of Dennis Creevey:
... When he had lined up with his terrified-looking peers, he caught Colin Creevey's eye, gave a double thumbs-up, and mouthed, I fell in the lake! He looked positively delighted about it.
... [Dennis gets sorted into Gryffindor.] ...
"Colin, I fell in!" he said shrilly, throwing himself into an empty seat. "It was brilliant! And something in the water grabbed me and pushed me back in the boat!"
"Cool!" said Colin, just as excitedly. "It was probably the giant squid, Dennis!"
"Wow!" said Dennis, as though nobody in their wildest dreams could hope for more than being thrown into a storm-tossed, fathoms-deep lake, and pushed out of it again by a giant sea monster.

i cant for the life of me remeber which book its in, but i loved Nearly Headless Nick's deathday party, and when he got the letter from the headless hunt (or whatever they're called), and he was just so indignant that he was refused membership because of "half an inch of skin and sinew".
and when harry arrives back in the common room after kissing cho, and ron asks how it was, and harry just says "wet"
also, its already been mentioned, but when the marauder's map starts insulting snape, both Remus and Sirius say something intelligent, and james just says "he's an ugly git"
there's a not particualrly funny bit that i like anyway, just after harry exit's his hearing in OoTP and is about to put some galleons int the fountain, he realises that its not as grand and majestic as he thought, and its like he's suddenly realising that everything in his life is a face.
OH and the phone box entrance to the ministry of magic, when all the kids are in it and it spits out visitors badges with their names on and "rescue mission" as the purpose of their visit.

that bit is absolutely brilliant :D
The start of the 4th book when Mrs Weasley sends the Dursleys the letter with the stamps on it makes me laugh everytime
Also love Rons line when they see the Goblin in the three broomsticks and Hermione says see feels sorry for them
What are you going to do set up SPUG Society for Protection of Ugly Goblins
Sirius's sarcasm, if thats the right word for it, at the start of the 5th is great :D
I dont know why you are complaining a deadly struggle for my soul would have broken the monotony nicely :D
Also love the fact that he brought those rats into the room Mrs Weasley and that were cleaning and put them onto the chair and Mrs Weasley sat on them, this is probably only funny to me cause i hated her for being so nasty to Sirius the night before .
McGonnegal as well is hilarious in the 5th
"if someone shakes their head it usually means no, unless she is using some form of sign lanaguage unknown to humans"
Also love Hermiones reaction to Hagrids brother calling her Hermy

Void Diving!!
I figure it's about time we focus on some of the fun parts before we all make ourselves age 40 years.
One of my favorite exchanges:
Harry: Yes.
Snape: Yes, Sir.
Harry: There's no reason to call me 'sir', professor.
I started shrieking with laughter. Brilliant.
" WHY ARE YOU WORRYING ABOUT YOU KNOW WHO? YOU SHOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT U-NO-POO! THE CONSTIPATION SENSATION THAT'S GRIPPING THE NATION!"

Aye, both incidents had me ROWLING..... :rotfl:
(Har har. ;))
I just adored Luna's commentary of the Quidditch match. So.....dreamy.:p
Also, I found that I rather enjoyed Ginny's sense of humor in this book. She really has a Fred and George outlook on life in some ways. She can be wickedly delightful.....like in this excerpt:
You'd think people had better things to gossip about," said Ginny, as she sat on the common-room floor, leaning against Harry's legs and reading the Daily Prophet. "Three Dementor attacks in a week, and all Romilda Vane does is ask me if it's true you've got a Hippogriff tattooed across your chest."
Ron and Hermione both roared with laughter. Harry ignored them.
"What did you tell her?"
"I told her it's a Hungarian Horntail," said Ginny, turning a page of the newspaper idly. "Much more macho."
Thanks," said Harry, grinning. 'And what did you tell her Ron's got?"
"A Pygmy Puff, but I didn't say where."

The fact that Harry felt like laughing during Dumbledore's funeral made it all the more realistic. I have found myself almost bursting out in hilarious giggles at some funerals, not out of insensitivity, but just because my memories of the person were just so funny. I think Dumbledore would have LOVED to know Harry, while sad and missing his mentor terribly, still felt like laughing at his funeral. :)

:rotfl:
Well, in Book 6, I don't know if Ron got a look at Uranus, but he sure got a look at Lavender's tonsils, didn't he? LOL
I also really enjoyed Ginny's sense of humor in Book 6.

This exchange was awesome, and firmly cemented Ginny as one of my favorite characters. I agree that she has, indeed, learned from Fred and George. This was classic.
And the "There's no need to call me 'sir'" line was absolutely brilliant. Although I don't know if I was laughing more at the actual line, or the image of Ron and Neville going, "Oh, SNAP!" :D ;)

Yes, Ginny is turning out to be one of my favorite gals as well. :D
Another priceless Weasley moment:
"Arthur, is that you?"
"Yes," came Mr. Weasley's weary voice. "But I would say that even if I were a Death Eater, dear. Ask the question!"
"Oh, honestly..."
"Molly!"
"All right, all right... What is your dearest ambition?"
"To find out how airplanes stay up."
Mrs. Weasley nodded and turned the doorknob, but apparently Mr. Weasley was holding tight to it on the other side, because the door remained firmly shut.
"Molly! I've got to ask you your question first!"
"Arthur, really, this is just silly..."
"What do you like me to call you when we're alone together?"
Even by the dim light of the lantern Harry could tell that Mrs. Weasley had turned bright red; he himself felt suddenly warm around the ears and neck, and hastily gulped soup, clattering his spoon as loudly as he could against the bowl.
"Mollywobbles," whispered a mortified Mrs. Weasley into the crack at the edge of the door.

I don't have my book on me at the moment, but my favorite was when Harry asked Luna to Slughorn's party, and Luna asked whether he dyed his eyebrow for the party and whether she should do hers too. :D :rotfl: I love Luna!
I also liked "I am a wizard, not a baboon brandishing a stick."
Overall, though, I found HBP much less funny than OotP. There's nothing funnier than the way McGonagall and Flitwick dealt with Umbridge.

Yes, this was certainly not the funniest book in the series (probably the least humorous in overall tone), but it still had some great moments throughout.
Like this one..... ;)
"You could say sorry," suggested Harry bluntly.
"What, and get attacked by another flock of canaries?" muttered Ron.
"What did you have to imitate her for?"
"She laughed at my mustache!"
"So did I, it was the stupidest thing I've ever seen."

(But, you know, we're writing spoilers here, I accidentally read somewhere that who was going to die before I got the book! I was very angry, there wasn't any spoiler sign nowhere there! )
My old favourite is in book 4, though; when the Weasleys arrive in the Dursleys' fireplace, and George says "Yeah, we're having the time of our lives here". I don't know if it's funny in english or not, but it is definitely that in hungarian. :)

That's a shame about the spoiler Wings, but this is a HP message board after all and it's the last place I'd be if I was trying to finish the book spoiler-free. No matter how safe we normally are from spoilers here, people do and will slip up on occasion.
So if anyone doesn't want to know very minor spoilers look away now... :p
"Mollywobbles," whispered a mortified Mrs. Weasley into the crack at the edge of the door. Oh yeah, that was hilarous!

Do you mean you read that here? Or on another site?
I think for the most part, people here are posting in threads that have spoiler warnings on them. But I ask everyone to familiarize themselves with the spoiler policy if you haven't already done so.
Back on topic:
I find it interesting that the characters seem more aware of the humor around them than they were in previous books.
And Luna, who in OotP was this oddball that Harry and Co. found very stranged (though the readers found her funny), now they're finding her amusing. Harry laughed at her comments at Slughorn's party and Ron loved her Quidditch commentary. And I think Ron's reaction to "Loser's Lurgy" was as amusing as the comment itself.

I love Ron trying to make Hermione notice him:
..."you've never been more fanciable."
Ron gagged on a large piece of kipper. Hermione spared him one look of disdain before turning back to Harry.
...
"You can still see the marks where that evil woman made you write with your own blood, but you stuck to your story anyway..."
"You can still see where those brains got hold of me in the Ministry, look," said Ron, shaking back his sleeves.
"And it doesn't hurt that you've grown about a foot over the summer, either", Hermione finished, ignoring Ron.
"I'm tall," said Ron, inconsequentially.
Poor Ron :D

Quidditch tryouts:
" ...the first ten was made up of first-years and it could not have been plainer that they had hardly ever flown before. Only one boy managed to remain airbone for more than a few seconds, and he was so surprised he promptly chrashed into one of the goalposts.
The second group comprised ten of the silliest girls Harry had ever encountered, who, when he blew his whistle, merely fell about giggling and clutching each other. Romilda Vane was amongst them. When he told them to leave the pitch they did so quite cheerfully and went to sit in the stands to heckle everyone else.
The third group had a pile-up halfway around the pitch. Most of the fourth group had come without broomsticks. The fifth group were Hufflepuffs.
'If there is anyone else here who's not from Gryffindor,' roared Harry, who was starting to get seriously annoyed, 'leave now, please!'
There was a pause, then a couple of little Ravenclaws went sprinting off the pitch, snorting with laughter."

 Yes, Ron's pleas for Hermione's attention are always really fun to read!
I was rereading PS and found a funny part: (From the letters from no one)
He was going to wait for the postman to arrive at Privet Drive and get the letters for number four first. His heart hammered as he crept across the dark hall toward the front door----
"AAAAARRRRRGGGH!"
Harry leapt into the air; he'd trodden on something big and squashy on the doormatt ---- something alive!
Lights clicked on upstairs and to his horror Harry realized that the big, squashy something had been his uncle's face.
And at the Quidditch World Cup, Book 4:
"Wild!" Ron said, twiddling the replay knob on the side. "I can make that old bloke down there pick his nose again... and again... and again..."
